P. 279 REMO BODEI, La filosofia italiana: ascesa e declino della sua vocazione civile P. 295 UMBERTO GALIMBERTI, Senza confine P. 303 NOTE SUGLI AUTORI P. 309 A Leonardo, cittadino del mondo Premessa del curatore Il progetto di pubblicare un numero speciale, dedicato ai 150 anni dell’U- nità d’Italia, di Studi Italiani/Estudios Italianos, rivista che da qualche anno l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Córdoba e la Facoltà di Lingue della Universidad Nacional de Córdoba vengono pubblicando congiuntamente come forum dell’italianistica in Argentina, nasce con l’intento di tratteg- giare, necessariamente in maniera incompleta, diremmo quasi “macchia- iola”, il percorso tracciato dal nostro Paese in questo arco temporale, in- crociandone gli aspetti più specificamente storico-politici con le fasi della costruzione socio-culturale e linguistica del Paese. Grazie all’apporto di autorevoli personalità del mondo della cul- tura, sia in Italia che in Argentina, che hanno generosamente risposto al nostro appello con i contributi, quasi sempre originali, qui presentati, sia- mo in grado di offrire quello che ci sembra un valido strumento di studio, analisi e riflessione sull’Italia: dal suo emergere quale Nazione nel 1861, al suo essere oggi un Paese che ha ceduto quote della sua sovranità agli organi dell’Unione Europea in un lungo, problematico ma quanto straor- dinario progetto di costruzione di una nuova entità economico-politica, e che si muove su uno scenario internazionale del tutto inedito e in continua accelerazione, in cui protagonisti vecchi e nuovi della geopolitica mon- diale si affacciano con esiti tutt’altro che scontati, interpellandoci sulle conseguenze, per l’Italia ma anche per l’Occidente tutto, dei nuovi assetti globali. Muovendoci in campi di studio di area umanistica, in ciò seguendo la vocazione di Studi Italiani/Estudios Italianos, abbiamo riunito gli inter- venti in diverse sezioni che spaziano dalla storia alla lingua e letteratura, dal teatro al melodramma, dall’arte all’architettura, aprendo una finestra 16 sulle relazioni tra l’Italia e il Nuovo Mondo, e lasciando infine la riflessio- ne sul divenire alla parola dei filosofi. Al di là dell’inevitabile parzialità ed incompletezza del ritratto abbozzato, ci sembra importante esser riusciti a raccogliere punti di vista multipli, a volte in contrasto tra di loro, sul Paese nel suo farsi e nel suo essere, che danno conto dell’estrema complessità italiana. La sezione storica traccia appunto il percorso compiuto dall’Italia Dal sorgere della Nazione al dibattito sulla “seconda Repubblica”. Af- facciatasi tardi sulla già affollata ribalta delle Nazioni occidentali ottocen- tesche, come leggiamo nell’intervento di Sergio Romano, l’Italia si trovò fin da subito impegnata a cercarvi una sua collocazione, in ciò affidandosi alle abilità politiche di Cavour prima e dei suoi successori in seguito, che riuscirono a volgere in loro favore un contesto internazionale dove i con- trastanti interessi delle grandi potenze finirono appunto per favorirne il suo consolidamento interno e il suo posizionamento in Europa. Nonostante l’improvvisa accelerazione del processo di unificazio- ne determinatosi tra la primavera del 1859 e la primavera del 1861, si potrebbe dire semplificando che l’intera storia dell’Italia unita è segnata dal ritardo con cui essa si costituì. A cui si aggiunge quell’altro “vizio co- stitutivo” che fin da subito si presentò nella sua complessità ai responsabili del nuovo Stato unitario, ovvero quella “questione meridionale” di cui si dibatte da quasi un secolo e mezzo e che trova ora in tempi recenti un suo corrispettivo nella nuova “questione settentrionale” che fa da sfondo al di- battito sul federalismo (cfr. Ernesto Galli della Loggia e Salvatore Lupo). Con queste problematiche vecchie e nuove tutte le classi dirigenti che si sono succedute al governo della Nazione hanno dovuto fare i conti, con una volontà, ora più forte ora più debole, di porvi riparo (cfr. Giovanni Sabbatucci). Così, per esempio, nella sezione La conquista della lingua l’inter- vento di Tullio De Mauro punta l’attenzione su quello sconfinato analfabe- tismo che arrivò in dote all’Italia unita e a quella grande varietà di lingue e dialetti presenti nel nuovo territorio nazionale, che resero indispensabili un’opera di alfabetizzazione attraverso l’istituzione dell’obbligo scolasti- co elementare e l’adozione di una lingua comune, ovvero di quell’italiano fin lì parlato da una ristrettissima cerchia di élites plurilingui, che alterna- vano nella lingua orale l’uso del dialetto con quello spesso del francese e che riservavano l’italiano all’uso scritto. Una lunga e sofferta conquista della lingua che può dirsi interamente compiuta in tempi recenti. 17 Non manca l’attenzione all’affermarsi in letteratura e attraverso il melodramma di tematiche risorgimentali che ancora oggi risultano produt- tive (v. per esempio Vincenzo Consolo e il suo romanzo risorgimentale). By analyzing the words and deeds of the President of the Republic and the case law of the Constitutional Court the paper claims that these two supreme constitutional authorities always refused to identify a set of constitutional values which cannot be touched by the European Union (EU). On the contrary, the paper suggests that both the President of the Republic and the Constitutional Court have endeavoured to emphasize the axiological overlap between the Italian Constitution and the project of European integration, considering Italy’s membership to the EU as the best way to fulfil the Constitution’s mandate.

    PRESS RELEASE 9 April sees the birth of Eutopia Ideas for Europe Magazine The first webzine about Europe. In European European political integration has reached a standstill. Trying to revive it without creating a European public opinion is unthinkable. We need to discuss what kind of Europe we want to build and do it in Europe, overcoming the linguistic and cultural barriers between countries. Eutopia, the first European webzine to address crucial issues for our future as Europeans, in a rigorous, structured but accessible way, has been created for this purpose. With this in mind, we have brought together, for a unique collaboration, four prestigious European publishers: S.Fischer Verlag in Germany, Editorial Debate in Spain, Éditions du Seuil in France and Editori Laterza in Italy. They will work with other partners including Telecom Italia and the European Institute - London School of Economics as the Academic Partner. The magazine's director is Eric Joszef, Italian correspondent of the French newspaper Libération. Authors including Zygmunt Bauman, Luciano Canfora, Paul Collier, to name a few, will express their thoughts, interpreting current issues with a continental perspective, because a united Europe needs a public debate that goes beyond national borders. We're convinced that a European culture and approach are missing when it comes to dealing with the big issues of our time. The magazine will be presented at 5.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 9 April at the offices of the publisher Laterza (Via di Villa Sacchetti 17, Rome).     THE PAST QUARTER-CENTURY IN LINGUISTIC HISTORIOGRAPHY W. Keith Percival University of Kansas Despite the title of this paper, I shall not attempt to present a straightforward chronicle of the past twenty-five years of scholarship in the historiography of linguistics, a topic too vast to cover in the space at my disposal. In any case, I can refer the interested reader to a competent survey and evaluation of the secondary literature in a recent article by Ayres-Bennett (1987). What I propose to do here instead is to raise the question of how the tempo of research on the history of linguistics started to speed up in the 1960s, and why more and more scholars began to devote their entire careers to it. I shall also examine some of the issues discussed in that decade because in my judgment they are among the perennial problems in linguistic historiography and in intellectual historiography in general. 1 I do not believe I need to demonstrate my initial premise, namely that there has been an explosive growth in the field of linguistic historiography in the past quarter-century. This increase of interest was in fact so spectacular that it was already being commented on by the second half of the 1960s (see, for example, Malkiel & Langdon 1969:530-531). Arce, il primo e maggior maestro di studi di italianistica nella Spagna d’allora, voleva introdurre in quest’ambito quel nuovo sguardo linguistico che De Mauro, in Italia, stava portando avanti. Sicché, nel 1972, liberatosi il posto di lettore di italiano alla Complutense, Don Joaquín chiese proprio al suo collega e amico De Mauro di suggerirgli il nome di qualche suo allievo/a, che potesse ricoprire quel ruolo (peraltro Arce stesso era stato lettore in Italia nei suoi anni giovanili). Arce aveva in mente una persona che sapesse di linguistica piuttosto che di ispanistica e fu così che De Mauro mi presentò a lui per occupare quel posto di lettorato che io tenni dal 1972 al 1974. É dunque doverosamente e con piacere, oltreché mestamente date le circostanze, che scrivo per i Cuadernos de Filogía Italiana queste righe in ricordo del linguista italiano che ebbe rapporti di vicinanza e di prossimità amicale con il Departamento che oggi pubblica la presente rivista e che tante volte lo aveva invitato a tenere conferenze e lezioni.

    RECREATIONAL LINGUISTICS: A PEDAGOGICAL METHOD CREATED BY ANTHONY MOLLICA TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO LEARN A LANGUAGE Paola Bernardini1 Language acquisition for Anthony Mollica, professor emeritus, Faculty of Education at Brock University, in Canada, is a “gioco-serio”: a linguistic approach he applies to language teaching. Creator of ludolinguistica (Recreational Linguistics) – as a stimulus for motivational activities in language teaching/learning – Mollica proposes a different and an additional pedagogical approach, with teaching methodologies that complement the traditional foreign language teaching: linguistic education via language games and word play serve to motivate language acquisition. As Tullio De Mauro writes in the Preface of Ludolinguistica e Glottodidattica (Mollica, 2010: viii), our ability to express ourselves is «un gioco che facciamo attingendo alle risorse della nostra memoria a lungo termine per prelevarne le parole, per incastrarle [...] avvolgerle in altre». Ludolinguistica – a neologism coined by Giuseppe Aldo Rossi2 – explores this concept and fosters the study of language through lexical combinations of puzzles, word searches, and riddles. Mollica devised this methodology following many years of experience in secondary schools and in Canadian universities, an experience which today he shares with the world participating in conferences and workshops: acrostics, anagrams, acronyms, idioms and idiomatic expressions and tongue twisters, all useful stimuli for language acquisition.     Minorities Formation in Italy GIOVANNA CAMPANI Minorities Formation in Italy Introduction For historical reasons Italy has always been characterized as a linguistically and culturally fragmented society. Italy became a unifi ed nation-state in 1860 after having been divided, for centuries, into small regional states and having been dominated, in successive times, by different European countries (France, Spain, and Austria). As a result, two phenomena have marked and still mark the country: - the existence of important regional and local differences (from the cultural, but also economic and political point of view); the main difference is represented by the North-South divide (the question of the Mezzogiorno) that has strongly in- fl uenced Italian history and is still highly present in political debates; and - the presence of numerous “linguistic” minorities (around fi ve percent of the Italian population) that are very different from each other. In Italy, one commonly speaks of linguistic minorities: regional and local differences are expressed by the variety of languages and dialects that are still spoken in Italy. The term “ethnic” is scarcely used in Italy, even if it has been employed to defi ne minorities together with the term “tribes” (see GEO special issue “the tribes of Italy”). When minorities speak of themselves, they speak in terms of populations, peo- ples, languages, and cultures. The greatest concentration of minorities is in border areas in the northeast and northwest that have been at the centre of wars and controversies during the 20th century.
