1 Superhuman Ethics Class Never let it be said that superheroes don’t take ethics seriously! After his fellow Avengers engaged in some questionable activities during an inter- stellar conflict in the “Galactic Storm” storyline, Captain America initiated a “Superhuman Ethics” class; later, the young heroes-in-training at Avengers Academy took the same class as part of their regular curriculum (taught by perennial screw-up Hank Pym).1 Even though the situations faced by superheroes may seem extraordi- nary, often involving aliens, wizards, or time travelers, most of them actually boil down to the same issues each of us face on a regular basis: the right ways to manage our interactions with other people given the various ways we can affect them in good ways and bad. We may not have super-strength or fire energy bolts from our eyes, but we can still use our very human abilities and the tools at our disposal to help or hurt people (including our- selves). Even if we’re of a mind to help people—like the heroes we are— questions nonetheless arise regarding when to offer help, how to do it when we decide to, and who to help if we have to make choices or set priorities. We also have to consider that the help we offer may come at a cost, not just to ourselves but possibly to other people, which also deserves consideration. Compared to the complexities of moral decision-making, all of the flying, punching, and mind-reading might seem like the easier part of a hero’s day! But these ethical dilemmas are the types of problems that we in the real world face all theCOPYRIGHTED time in our ordinary lives, and MATERIAL in the comics they lend an important sense of humanity to even the most super of heroes.

1 A Celebration of Superheroes Virtual Conference 2021 May 01-May 08 #DePaulHeroes Conference organizer: Paul Booth ([email protected]) with Elise Fong and Rebecca Woods 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This has been a strange year, to be sure. My appreciation to everyone who has stuck with us throughout the trials and tribulations of the pandemic. The 2020 Celebration of Superheroes was postponed until 2021, and then went virtual – but throughout it all, over 90% of our speakers, both our keynotes, our featured speakers, and most of our vendors stuck with us. Thank you all so much! This conference couldn’t have happened without help from: • The College of Communication at DePaul University (especially Gina Christodoulou, Michael DeAngelis, Aaron Krupp, Lexa Murphy, and Lea Palmeno) • The University Research Council at DePaul University • The School of Cinematic Arts, The Latin American/Latino Studies Program, and the Center for Latino Research at DePaul University • My research assistants, Elise Fong and Rebecca Woods • Our Keynotes, Dr. Frederick Aldama and Sarah Kuhn (thank you!) • All our speakers… • And all of you! Conference book and swag We are selling our conference book and conference swag again this year! It’s all virtual, so check out our website popcultureconference.com to see how you can order. All proceeds from book sales benefit Global Girl Media, and all proceeds from swag benefit this year’s charity, Vigilant Love. DISCORD and Popcultureconference.com As a virtual conference, A Celebration of Superheroes is using Discord as our conference ‘hub’ and our website PopCultureConference.com as our presentation space. While live keynotes, featured speakers, and special events will take place on Zoom on May 01, Discord is where you will be able to continue the conversation spurred by a given event and our website is where you can find the panels.

“To Fight the Battles We Never Could”: The Militarization of Marvel’s Cinematic Superheroes by Brett Pardy B.A., The University of the Fraser Valley, 2013 Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the School of Communication Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology Brett Pardy 2016 SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY Summer 2016 Approval Name: Brett Pardy Degree: Master of Arts Title: “To Fight the Battles We Never Could”: The Militarization of Marvel’s Cinematic Superheroes Examining Committee: Chair: Frederik Lesage Assistant Professor Zoë Druick Senior Supervisor Associate Professor Adel Iskander Supervisor Assistant Professor Michael Ma External Examiner Faculty Member Department of Criminology Kwantlen Polytechnic University Date Defended/Approved: June 16, 2016 ii Abstract The Marvel comics film adaptations have been some of the most successful Hollywood products of the post 9/11 period, bringing formerly obscure cultural texts into the mainstream. Through an analysis of the adaptation process of Marvel Entertainment’s superhero franchise from comics to film, I argue that a hegemonic American model of militarization has been used by Hollywood as a discursive formation with which to transform niche properties into mass market products. I consider the locations of narrative ambiguities in two key comics texts, The Ultimates (2002-2007) and The New Avengers (2005-2012), as well as in the film The Avengers (2012), and demonstrate the significant reorientation of the film franchise towards the American military’s “War on Terror”. While Marvel had attempted to produce film adaptations for decades, only under the new “militainment” discursive formation was it finally successful.

By Lyndsey Erin Shelton Under the mentorship of Dr. Darin H. Van Tassell ABSTRACT It is a widely accepted notion that a child can only be called stupid for so long before they believe it, can only be treated in a particular way for so long before that is the only way that they know. Why is that notion never applied to how we treat, address, and present religion and the religious to children and young adults? In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games.

Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT BEEMER, LAWRENCE W., Ph.D., June 2011, English American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal (204 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Robert Miklitsch Coining the term "fractal narrative," this dissertation examines the complex storytelling structure that is particular to contemporary American superhero comics. Whereas other mediums most often require narrative to function as self-contained and linear, individual superhero comics exist within a vast and intricate continuity that is composed of an indeterminate number of intersecting threads. Identical to fractals, the complex geometry of the narrative structure found in superhero comics when taken as a whole is constructed by the perpetual iteration of a single motif that was established at the genre's point of origin in Action Comics #1. The first appearance of Superman institutes all of the features and rhetorical elements that define the genre, but it also encodes it with the specific ideology of The New Deal era. In order to examine this fractal narrative structure, this dissertation traces historical developments over the last seven decades and offers a close reading Marvel Comics' 2006 cross-over event, Civil War.

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes/Wolverine and the X-Men CYOA V.04 “Then there came a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, they became the Avengers!” Welcome, Jumper, to Earth-8096. A world not too dissimilar from the main Marvel universe, with the main difference being a more modern setting and how late the Avengers actually “assemble”. Of course, this means the main Marvel mainstays are here; the Avengers, of course, as well as Mutants, evil alien empires, gods, magic, monsters, and threats on a cosmic scale, as well as much more. You will start out a day before the events of the first episode of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Here’s +1000 Choice Points to help you out. Location Roll 1d8 or pay 50 CP to choose; if you pay and choose 6 or 8 you also choose the result of the second role. 1-2: New York City- The Big Apple, home to most of the superheroes (and supervillains) of the world, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the X-Men and soon: the Avengers. 3: Las Vegas- The City of Sin, while not home to much (super-powered) crime, is relatively close to The Cube, and may be the scene for the Leader’s bid to turn all of humanity into mutates with Gamma radiation. 4: London- The United Kingdom has its own heroes and villains, though there’s little interaction between them and their counterparts from “the Colonies”. 5: Central Wakanda- The capital of the mysterious country of Wakanda, home to the largest supply of Vibranium in the world.

  • The Great Big Marvel Character Index (GBMCI) Compiled by Andrew Goldstein [1]
The Great Big Marvel Character Index (GBMCI) Compiled by Andrew Goldstein [1] Version 1.0, last revised 01/20/2018 This index notes each character from the Marvel Universe that was described in one or more MARVEL SUPER HEROES game products. The abbreviations used herein follow. The letter D, followed by a number, indicatesthat the character was mentioned in that issue of DRAGON® Magazine (issues #88 to #198). The letter P, followed by a number, indicates the given issue number of POLYHEDRON Newszine in which a character was mentioned (issues #18 to #61). Some products listed did not mention specific heroes or villains, but are included here to show the complete line of MARVEL SUPER HEROES game products. In cases where character entries occupy multiple pages, the page number given denotes the beginning page of the character entry. Note that this index ONLY includes characters published under the TSR "FASERIP" system; it does not include source material for the SAGA or any other subsequent incarnation of the Marvel RPG, or unpublished "vaporware" works in progress that were never commercially released, etc. This index also does not include various issues of the Marvel-Phile and other publications which do not include character information (for example, the various Ultimate Power Book addenda, Q&A, and the character indexes themselves) although some of those articles do include non- character stats (e.g., Marvel Universe technology, or real-world miltary generic stats). The TSR-produced miniatures sets are likewise not listed, because why the heck would you need to look those up? The index will eventually include fan-made material that follows the same system, as relevant to the Marvel canon.
