udallas.edu 2019-20 Bulletin 2019-20 ON THE COVER: Madie Grace Hoelscher, BA ’19, uses a visual language to create meditative pieces focused on color and shape. Primary colors carry what she considers life’s most important aspects, especially for connection: red connotes love, yellow prayer, and blue death. “Trypan Blue” deals with the raw nature of death, the title referencing a vital slide stain used in biology to visualize the number of dead cells in a sample, highlighting the distinction between life and death. The lines signify humanity in relation to the sublime — and in this case, the connection to those we have lost.
