DOI 10.1177/1012690212464965 Introduction The clásico is the renowned term used to describe the matches between the Real Madrid CF and the FC Barcelona football teams. Although the origins of the rivalry date back more than 100 years, it is now, due basically to the economic repercussion and global impact of the clubs involved, that the clásico has gained unprecedented media attention. Both teams rank in the top two in total fans worldwide, 57.8m for FC Barcelona and 31.3m for Real Madrid CF (Sport+Markt, 2010), and gross income, 450€m for Real Madrid and 479€m for Barcelona (Deloitte, 2012). The intensity of this media coverage is particularly notable in Spain, where football is the most popular sport, and the rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid has evolved into a cornerstone of the news agenda (González Ramallal, 2004; Isasi Varela, 2006). However, apart from the emotion and uncertainty derived from their games – with anything between two and five matches a year – the attraction of the Real Madrid-Barcelona (RMD-FCB) rivalry lies beyond the realm of the mere sporting competition and is based upon the mediated discourse around it, fuelled by a 24/7 news cycle. The news pieces do not stand alone but are contained in larger narratives, whose purpose when it comes to sports journalism is not to give a conciliatory account of the events but to ‘emphasize the elements of crisis and contradiction’ (Moragas, 1992:15) and the ‘production of difference’ (Rowe, 2003:282). -

They are nationalleaders in the print as wel! as the online market for general information paid-for newspapers. Judging from the front pages of these newspapers on 8 October 2003, al! of them update frequently the news on the Web, and at the same time, keep a c10se reference between their print and online contento Al! three online newspapers also paid special attention to hypertextual, interactive and multimedia content in 2003, and increasingly do so since. This might be considered one distinctive feature of the Spanish online press. Another peculiarity of the main Spanish online newspapers has been the coexistence of very different business models, from total!y free to fuI! payment models, even though these newspapers have very similar news offers. A Country of Paradoxes Spanish people like to talk abollt themselves by saying that 'Spain is different!'. They use this widely known expression to make reference to such diverse fields as politics, culture or traditions. And it could also be suitable to describe the Spanish media. During years, for instance, Spain has been the only European country whose written press comprised only compact newspapers, even though there is not a single sensa• tionalist daily. In addition, Spain has traditionally been a country where the newspa• per reading indexes were among the lowest of the continent, in spite of the fact that the number of newspaper titles per capita is one of the highest (Nieto & Mora 1989). -

Changes vary across different countries and roll- out schedule is not known outside Facebook. -
El Cine Y Su Imaginario En La Vanguardia Española
EL CINE Y SU IMAGINARIO EN LA VANGUARDIA ESPAÑOLA VICENTE SÁNCHEZ-BIOSCA Hablar de la relación entre cine y literatura en el seno de la vanguardia española implica decidirse por un enfoque entre las varias opciones que se abren a la historiografía, pero también exige desgranar la importancia de cada una de ellas. La primera es la evaluación de la relación entre ambas artes, sus influencias mutuas en el período analizado y, a fuer de ampliaciones, el hallazgo de las mil y una referencias, críticas y loas que el nuevo arte merece entre los que practican la literatura. En román paladino, se trataría de enfrentar el desinterés por el cine que definió a la generación del 98 con el entusiasmo que aquél despertó en la del 27, colocando la mítica figura de Ramón Gómez de la Serna como gozne. Esta apuesta desde la literatura no carece de interés y ha sido ,la mayoritaria en los estudios dedicados al fenómeno. La segunda opción, siempre desde el bando literario, consiste en la búsqueda y análisis de procedimientos cinematográfteos en la obra de poetas y narradores del período. El catálogo de recursos, sin embargo, rara vez va más allá del impresionismo y, a la postre, tropieza con la dificultad de definir lo que es un procedimiento cinematográfico sin presuponer una esencia del nuevo arte. De este modo, se está condenado a perpetuar la tradición del llamado pre-cinema, si bien legitimada en esta ocasión por la coexistencia de la literatura con el cine 1 • La tercera actitud posible saltaría a la trinchera enemiga -la pantalla- para analizar los resultados filmicos de la vanguardia en el marco de las preocupaciones plásticas, literarias e ideológicas de la vanguardia en su conjunto. -

All foreigners living in France, within forty eight hours after war is declared, will be deported or put into concentration camps on islands off the coast of France. Only men or women over fifty will be exempt from this law, which does not apply to allies, but does apply to neutral countries. Abraham Lincoln Brigade: African American Internationalism Manifested Jason Huang “The earth bounced under my rubbery legs like the deck of the ship that had brought me across the Atlantic. Each bomb tore open a new hole. Mounds of earth and white-hot shrapnel flew about me. Suddenly I felt a sudden stinging in my legs, but with so much happening I didn’t think any more about it. At moments the entire world seemed to be flying upwards, further darkening and polluting the already thick sulfurous air,” wrote James Yates in his memoir Mississippi to Madrid.1 To the average person, this might sound like a scene from World War Two: the brave American soldier charging fascist lines. However, this took place during the middle of the Spanish Civil War, around three years before the outbreak of the Second World War, and James Yates was not fighting for the United States Armed Forces. Instead, he was one of around ninety African Americans fighting alongside 2700 white Americans in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, an International Brigade composed of volunteers from the United States of America, 3300 miles away from home.2 The intersectionality present on the Republican side of the Spanish Civil War led to one of the most diverse locations in the world in 1936. International Brigades, volunteer battalions consisting of anti-fascists from all over the world, broke down racial, class, and gender barriers. Republican International Brigades had 40,000 volunteer troops from fifty-three countries, some of the furthest coming from China, Palestine, and Costa Rica.3 People of every ideological background, from social democrats to anarcho- syndicalists, to Stalinist communists, all flocked to fight against fascism. -
