Veronica Kuehn Office Manager St. Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two FROM FR. ARNOLD TADENA IN MEMORIAM Bishop Cirilo Flores was welcomed as Coadjutor Bishop of San Diego in 2012. He became the fifth Bishop of San Diego in September 2013, succeeding Bishop Robert H. Brom after Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Brom on his 75th birth- day, as directed by church law. Bishop Flores suffered a stroke in his office about five months ago. He was later diagnosed with can- cer of unknown origin but mainly in the bones. The cancer was widespread, very advanced and very aggres- sive. Unfortunately, Bishop Flores was no longer a candidate for chemotherapy because of his very weak con- dition and the advanced stage of the disease. He was moved from the hospital in Los Angeles to Nazareth House where he was given palliative care. Bishop Flores passed away peacefully Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 2:47 pm at Nazareth House in Mission Valley. Bishop Cirilo Flores was a beacon of light. He was completely devoted to those entrusted to his care. He was determined to build a strong community of faith. He served us so briefly, but yet his life touched us all. In celebrating his life, Bishop Flores was absolutely wonderful. How many thousands of lives he touched, of different folks, kids, children, young and old, and the religious and ordained ministers. He was a truly good and decent man - a man of God. His love and faith in God helped our young people and all our people in their journey of faith. His death taught us a very great and wonderful lesson – how to die with dignity and courage. He tried valiantly to follow Jesus closely and all through the recent months of great suffering that ended his life. What a tremendous loss it is for our Diocese. Now, Bishop Flores is at home with the Lord. You are greatly loved, Bishop Flores. Your compassionate smile will forever be with us. Rest in Peace!
