(A concise checklist of the species can be found in Table 4, page 120.) Distribution maps are included as well as 18 colour plates covering all but one species. Where no specimens of a particular spe cies from the Philippines were available to us, illustrations are given of specimens from outside the Philippines. In total we have listed 117 species (with 5 additional subspecies where more than one subspecies of a species exists in the Philippines). Four tables are provided: 1) a breakdown of the number of species and endemic species/subspecies for each subfamily, tribe and genus of Philippine Sphingidae; 2) an evaluation of the number of species as well as endemic species/subspecies per island for the nine largest islands of the Philippines plus one small island group for comparison; 3) an evaluation of the Sphingidae endemicity for each of Vane-Wright’s (1990) faunal regions. From these tables it can be readily deduced that the highest species counts can be encountered on the islands of Palawan (73 species), Luzon (72), Mindanao, Leyte and Negros (62 each). -

The external structure of the integument of Dynamine postverta postverta (Cramer, 1779) is based on detailed morphological drawings and scanning electron microscopy. The data are compared with other species belonging to eight tribes of Nymphalidae, to assist future studies on the taxonomy and systematics of Neotropical Biblidinae. KEYWORDS. Países como Guatemala, en esta gran área biogeográfi ca, tiene grandes zonas de bosque húmedo tropical y bosque mesófi lo, por esta razón es muy importante para analizar la diversidad en la región. Lamentablemente, la fauna de mariposas de Guatemala es poco conocida y por lo tanto, es necesario llevar a cabo un estudio y análisis de la composición y la diversidad de las mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) en Guatemala. -

(#e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract The bioecology of til hawk moth, Acherontia styx Westwood was studied on Sesamum indicum (Linn.) variety TKG-22 under field and lab. condition during 2004-06. The eggs were globular in shape, yellow in colour with 0.70-0.95 mm in size. The incubation period of the eggs was 2-4 days with the neonate period of 10-15 minutes. There were five larval instars and length of the completely developed larva was 68-79 mm with larval period of 20-21 days. The maximum larvae were obtained during late August to September. The pre-pupal and pupal periods were 3-4 and 14-23 days respectively, with pupae conical in shape. The mating was always at morning (0.07-0.10 minutes) followed by oviposition (24 to 36 hours) with fecundity of 5-8. Life span of the adult was 3-5 days, total life cycle was completed in 39-52 days. Mean adult emergence (%), sex ratio and growth index were 95 to 100%, 1:1 and 2.64 to 2.27 respectively. There are only three generations in a year. The plants were infested to the extent of 31.6% by this insect. Maximum damage is caused during September-October. Keywords: Bioecology, Acherontia styx Westwood. Dan tells us about Elbow-Bush and spring butterflies, and Mike tells us about 2005’s amazing new butterfly records. Mike has also put together an extensive calendar of events of interest to us bug lovers. Enjoy! Time to Renew Your Membership! We’ve almost completed our transition to a calendar year membership renewal, and now Elbow-Bush flowers (D. Hardy) almost everyone’s membership dues are due (unless already paid). The cost is $20 per household. The fee for new members joining Elbow-Bush & later in the year is pro-rated on a quarterly basis: from April to June it’s $15, from July to Sept. it’s Spring Butterflies $10, and from October to December it’s $5. by Dan Hardy The Elbow-Bush (Forestiera pubescens) blooms in late winter and early spring, hence its alternate name, Club Meeting Spring Herald. This is the bush to watch for in February. Find a few and start checking them right Monday January 23, 7:00 pm now. Although I know where they are, I miss their Zilker Botanical Garden Center bloom period some years when I check too late. So you can’t start monitoring too early. The bloom period Dale Clark comes down from his butterfly ranch of Agarita and Redbuds overlaps or follows Elbow- in Dallas to tell us “The Joys and Heartaches Bush. of Butterfly Farming.” His ranching business, Butterflies Unlimited, supplies live exhibits (no The Spanish name is Cruzilla, which means little releases) all over the country with over 50 (!) cross. -

Introducción El tubo digestivo de los insectos varía en su morfología de acuerdo al tipo de alimentación y las fases de desarrollo del organismo, generalmente se observan tres regiones bien diferenciadas, que en un sentido anteroposterior son: el estomodeo o intestino anterior; el mesodeo o íntestino medio y el proctodeo o intestino posterior (Morón, 1987; De la Fuente, 1994; Richards y Davies, 1977). Ordinariamente entre el estomodeo y el mesodeo se encuentra la válvula estomodeica o cárdica, y entre el mesodeo y el proctodeo la válvula proctodeica o pilórica. El estomodeo y el proctodeo provienen de invaginaciones del ectodermo; el mesodeo se forma a partir del endodermo (Ross, 1973) De la Fuente diferencia en el estomodeo; la faringe y el esófago; en la mayoría de los casos además se puede apreciar que el esófago esta conformado por la región anterior, el buche, la molleja o proventrículo y una válvula cárdica o esofágica El mesodeo, también llamado estómago o ventrículo, es muy variable en los hexápodos y puede ser tubular o en forma de saco, recto o enrollado, uniforme o dividido en regiones (De la Fuente, 1994). -
