  • Climate Change Communication in Late-Night Comedy Television
Fordham University Fordham Research Commons Student Theses 2015-Present Environmental Studies Fall 9-14-2020 Live From New York, It’s Environmental Science! Climate Change Communication in Late-Night Comedy Television Serena A. Ingram Follow this and additional works at: https://research.library.fordham.edu/environ_2015 Live From New York, It’s Environmental Science! Climate Change Communication in Late-Night Comedy Television Serena A. Ingram Abstract This thesis explores why traditional climate change communication often fails in the mainstream news media and how late-night comedy television circumvents these problems. These late-night shows provide humorous news coverage that holds politicians and the press accountable for enabling denialist rhetoric. The first chapter sources data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication to outline the issues of climate change and public understanding of climate science. The second chapter describes how rhetorical analysis can identify effective or ineffective climate communication strategies. It also discusses the emotional factors that surround climate change, and how humor strengthens communication and unifies individuals toward a common goal. The third chapter addresses the issue of politically spun news and information biases in climate reporting. It details how political figures influence news coverage of climate change and spin the news to reinforce their own agendas. The fourth chapter provides examples and analysis of climate change related segments from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update.” The fifth chapter applies the principles of late-night comedy and climate change communication to potential government policy and more mainstream television news.

One outlet which constantly both reflects and enables patriarchy is our media; the movie industry in particular plays a critical role in constructing gender roles and reflecting our cultural attitudes toward patriarchy. IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

Topical Monologue Jokes On Donuts Featuring Dr. Fauci’s Face: Due to the desperate need for facts and science that’s sweeping the Nation in this Coronavirus time, Dr. Fauci is becoming something of a hero. In fact, CNN reported that donuts featuring Dr. Fauci’s face are becoming a hit in NYC…[graphic]: Stephen Colbert: Donuts? New York—you couldn’t think of a healthier food for one second while we’re all trying to stay healthy and improve our immune systems? You couldn’t try carving Dr. Fauci’s face into an eggplant? [Colbert NY accent]: “In honor of this man that provided us with medical truth that ultimately saved the nation from entirely dying out from a deadly virus, here’s some diabetes!" Trevor Noah: People are so into Dr. Fauci right now, it’s crazy. He’s going to become our new mascot, I’m telling you. Like instead of the Easter Bunny, it’ll just be Dr. Fauci sneaking around your house, laying chocolate eggs with his face on them everywhere for you to find. Luckily Christmas will pretty much just be the same: an old white man as the bearer of good things. Fauci isn’t fat like Santa Claus, but after a few of those donuts with his face on them… On Drake’s kid: Trevor Noah: Drake has finally revealed to the public a picture of his kid on social media. [graphic] Here he is: Adonis Graham. Yes, Drake named his kid Adonis—after the mortal that had sex with Aphrodite. Aphrodite! Goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure! ….I see what you’re doing here, Drake.

  • Netflix's Big Mouth
Netflix’s Big Mouth Big Mouth = Big Topics The first season of Netflix’s new animated show Big Mouth debuted on September 29, 2017 and is very popular among teens and young adults. Boasting an all-star cast and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the cartoon is about middle schoolers going through puberty in the most explicit, perverse, and, at times, depraved way possible. Puberty is indeed a difficult time for all of us, and while the show does bring some good to the discussion, it’s also fraught with problems. What do I need to know about Big Mouth? It’s an adult cartoon based on the real-life experiences that comic writers Nick Kroll and An- drew Goldberg had as kids growing up in New York. They share, in graphic detail, what it was like growing up and going through puberty. As most young men do, Nick and Andrew strug- gled through lust, sexuality, relationships with girls, and the ups and downs of friendship. The show features some of the most popular comedians of our time as the voices, including: John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jordan Peele. Although the show is about pre-teens, it is intended for an adult audience. However, Netflix does not effectively limit younger viewers’ access, and undoubtedly, there will be many teens and pre-teens who watch the show. Many of them have lots of questions about sex, and they will be drawn to the show in hopes of finding answers. Unfortunately, due to the content, they are likely to develop some severely warped ideas from watching it.

arcade OCTOBER 10 2008 • 12 the セ オ ・ ウ エ fo-r the top 10 comedic pe-rsonalities Derrick Tou s senior staffwriter This year's pursuit for the funniest comedic personalities was long, hard and filled with surprises. After searching and scouring You Tube and IMDb for days, a large list of funny people was created. After cutting said list from a group of hopefuls that included Bon-Qui- Qui, the creatarrrs of Pirate Facebook, and whoever has been setting off the Wall, Phelps and Irby fire-alarms, the following 10 comedians and comediennes were selected for keeping us rolling on the floor and slapping our knees. 1. Tina Fey No surprise here. Tina Fey is a maverick filled with that maverick energy, but she's got more to her name than the best Sarah Palin impression this side of Alaska. Governor Palin herself described the Weekend Update host and star of "Baby Mama" as "a ィ ッ ッ エ セ As the first female head writer of"Satur- day Night Live" and the creator of the hit NBC show "30 Rock," Fey has garnered five Emmys in the past two years as well as several hottest woman nomi· nations. Although male fans across the nation were disappointed when Fey traded her naughty secretary black-rimmed glasses for Palin lenses, she remains on the top of the current comedic scene. 2. Conan O'Brien Probably today's most prominent comedic writer and funniest male personality, Conan O'Brien earns the number two spot. A former writ- er for "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons," Conan has hosted his "Late Night" show for over 12 years; however, the magna cum laude graduate of Harvard will replace Jay Leno next year as the face of late night tele\;sion and will most likely celebrate with his famous string dance.
