NZ South Island 2018 NEW ZEALAND SOUTH ISLAND PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPEDITION 0 3 - 1 5 N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 9 DAY 1 CHRISTCHURCH Arrive in Christchurch and take the afternoon to relax and overcome travel fatigue.. DAY 2 ARTHUR'S PASS Depart with your guides for Arthur's pass. Absorb the authentic high country experience before setting off to Castle Hill 'Kura Tawhiti'. This imposing array of limestone boulders, reminiscent of an old, run-down stone castle, provides photographic opportunities at every turn. Overnight in a cozy high country lodge after a first day of photography. DAYS 3 & 4 KAHURANGI Travel north to isolated Kahurangi National Park. Photograph lagoons, tannin-coloured rivers, limestone arches, and the spectacular hidden basin surrounded by the lush native rainforest Return to your accommodation well after sunset, where you will be welcomed back with a sumptuous traditional roast dinner. DAY 5 WEST COAST Travel south along New Zealand's remote and rugged West Coast. Set out for photography in the late light at the magical Pancake Rocks and Blowholes, where columns of water shoot skyward from rocks that resemble giant stacks of hotcakes. Dinner will be served in a cozy typical New Zealand tavern. DAY 5 & 6 GLACIER COUNTRY Photograph the sunrise over the Pancake Rocks before departing further South into Glacier Country. We will overnight in the town of Fox Glacier. This glacier descends from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just 300 metres above sea level and offers amazing scenery. The afternoon will be spent photographing the area or taking a hike towards the Glacier. This beautiful photographic location includes the stunning reflective vistas of Lake Matherson. DAY 7 WANAKA Travers the mighty Southern Alps via the Haast pass and its many grand waterfalls and onwards to Wanaka. Spend time discovering all that this region has to offer, including iconic Lake Wanaka, New Zealand's fourth largest lake. You will also visit the beautiful shores of Glendhu Bay and Mt Aspiring National Park, a wonderful mixture of remote wilderness, high mountains and spectacular river valleys. DAYS 8 & 9 MT COOK Capture the famous 'lone tree' at Lake Wanaka, photograph the layered landscape of the Lindis Pass, before driving through the picturesque Tussock grasslands of the McKenzie country. The final part of the road rests along the edge of the opaque turquoise coloured Lake Pukaki. The Aoraki Mount Cook National Park includes the highest peak in Australasia: Mount Cook. A variety of walking trails begin in or near Mount Cook Village – most take only a couple of hours and lead to magical photographic locations. DAYS 10 & 11 WAKATIPU Depart from Mt Cook for the iconic Wakatipu region and the Queenstown- Glenorchy road, rated one of the most scenic drives in the world. This road follows the edge of Lake Wakatipu, providing breathtaking vistas of snow capped mountains and DAY 12 MILFORD SOUND lake views.     DECEMBER 2013 Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve Supplementary Report Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve - 2013 The first full year of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve in the South Island of New Zealand has been one of development and celebration. Two management board meetings were held. Growing visitor numbers, media coverage, and an increase in awareness of the beauty of the natural night sky has generated much interest both within New Zealand and internationally. The AMISDR has received strong support from the University of Canterbury both for the Reserve itself and the Starlight Festival held in October. Description of assets The department provides assets to the industrial fire brigade. Key assets are the fire appliance (Hino FT 175LA 4WD fire engine) and the equipment carried on it: portable pump; hoses, branches and nozzles; six sets of breathing apparatus, air compressor and 17 air tanks; 16 uniforms; and radio and pager systems. A new fire-monitoring system was installed in the Visitor Centre in 2008. This system is used to monitor the status of some of the sprinkler systems and heat-sensor systems in the village, sending an alarm to the New Zealand Fire Service as well as activating pagers in the event of a fire. The monitoring service on the fire system is provided by an external contractor (ADT Paging Systems). Sirens can also be switched off or run manually, by fire brigade personnel. The New Zealand Fire Service audits the fire brigade periodically, and may recommend changes to be made to the operation of the brigade and its assets. The major asset upgrades and replacements that are anticipated to be required over the next 10 years are: ¾ The fire appliance. This is a 1987 vehicle vintage and has a standard working life of 25 years, which, according to the ‘standard life’ model, will require replacing in 2012. The appliance has been well maintained and has not travelled many kilometres since being stationed at Aoraki/Mount Cook village.

    Case Study 16.1: Lake Tekapo – Aoraki – Mount Cook Starlight Reserve, New Zealand Margaret Austin and John Hearnshaw Presentation and analysis of the site Geographical position: Central South Island of New Zealand in an area bounded by the main range of the Southern Alps in the west and the Two Thumb Range in the east, including a large part of the Mackenzie Basin and also Mount Cook National Park in the province of Canterbury. Villages include Tekapo, Mount Cook and Twizel. Location: Latitude 44º 00.5´ S, longitude 170º 28.7´ E (Tekapo Village). Elevation from 710m above mean sea level (Lake Tekapo) to 3750m above mean sea level (Mount Cook). General description: The core area is Mount John University Observatory (elevation 1032m) on the south-western shore of Lake Tekapo. Tekapo Village (population about 400) is 3 km from the summit of Mount John in a direct line. Twizel and Mount Cook Village are 40 km and 50 km from the summit respectively, neither being visible from Mount John. Inventory of the remains : The Mount John University Observatory houses four research telescopes of apertures 1.8, 1.0, 0.6 and 0.6m respectively. History of the site: The Mount John site was surveyed in the early 1960s using NSF funds from the University of Pennsylvania. The observatory was founded in 1965 as a joint astronomical research station of the Universities of Canterbury and Pennsylvania. The partnership continued for a decade. Cultural and symbolic dimension: The Mount John site is the principal astronomical observatory in New Zealand and the world’s southernmost observatory (other than instruments in the Antarctic).
