JOHN’S May 16, 2015 Destination St. John’s is thrilled to invite you to host the 2015 Atlantic Cup Challenge in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador. St. John’s and our entire region has become one of the most desirable destinations in Canada to host meetings, conferences and sport events. It is interesting to note that delegates of conferences held in St. John’s tend to travel with more people and stay longer than when they travel to other destinations. Almost 50% of delegates surveyed extended their stay in our province. Air accessibility has grown exponentially and today we are serviced daily by Air Canada, United, Westjet, and Porter Airlines and even boast direct flights to several cities in Canada (as far west as Calgary), the United States, England and Ireland. Also noteworthy, by the end of 2015, a new CAT-3 landing system will be completed at our International Airport allowing 99% landing accessibility in the case of inclement weather. This new technology places St. John’s amongst the Top 8 airports in Canada. St. John’s promises you a sophisticated city experience full of small town warmth and the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Having successfully hosted numerous national and international sport events over the years we are confident that we can deliver the kind of experience that will truly WOW your athletes during your championship in Conception Bay South. TO JOHN’S WELCOME Welcome to St. John’s Rich with history, rife with culture, and sprawling with natural beauty, St. John’s is a City of exaggerated proportions. All these wonders have been here for thousands of years, embraced by those who happened upon them. And while finding the true spirit of this land, you’ll stumble upon everything from wildlife, to people, to amazing vistas, to an abundance of culture. In fact, being the most easterly point in North America merits our very own time zone, half-an-hour off-kilter with the rest of the world. Around every corner, around every bend, you will find a little piece of heaven, an unexpected delight, a playful breeze that will help your journey. With a population of over 200,000, the metropolitan St. John’s area is the economic and cultural centre for the province and offers a natural environment, clean air, safe streets and all the amenities of a larger city with a European flavour. Our rich history and culture and “small town” quality of life make St. John’s a pleasure to visit. Urban revitalization, including a concerted effort at heritage conservation, has preserved some of the most remarkable streetscapes in North America. Water Street, the oldest street among North America’s European colonies, combines modern enterprise with Old-World charm. The revitalized downtown core, adjacent to the waterfront, features a variety of shops and boutiques, museums, galleries, historic sites, theatres, artisan centres and craft stores - all within easy walking distance of major hotels, and convention facilities and our state of the art arena. Restored heritage homes provide first-class bed and breakfast facilities in and around the downtown core. For over 500 years St. John’s has been visited by explorers and adventurers. We now invite the 2015 Atlantic Cup Challenge to experience this colourful history and enticing combination of old world charm, unique architecture, historic and natural attractions. 2015 Atlantic Cup Atlantic2015 8 WHAT SOUNDS BETTER: I’VE BEEN TO DISNEYLAND OR VISIT TO REASONS I’VE BEEN TO THE EDGE OF THE EARTH? Why would anybody want to come to a place that some call the Edge of the Earth? There are hundreds of reasons, but if we could boil it down to just one, it might be this: you might never find another place that makes you feel at the same time... lost and found. It’s the place where things just happen. It’s a place where the unexpected is the norm and is just slightly off-kilter with the rest of the world. Where the people and the beauty of this land stay with you long after you’re gone! COASTLINE There’s enough coastline wrapped around this place to stretch its way back and forth across North America four times over (29,000 kilometres to be exact). Sprinkled with guts, inlets, coves, and bays with historic towns and fishing villages, complete with spectacular views. WILDLIFE AND NATURE Ten thousand humpbacks pass by our shores every year, chasing ten thousand year old icebergs.
