DELICIOUS, NUTRITIOUS, & FUN FOODS FOR celebrationsAT SCHOOL! This recipe book was developed to provide children’s services and schools with ideas to provide healthy foods for celebrations that will be tasty and exciting for children, while complying with the Fresh Taste @ School Criteria. Compiled by Jessica Mitchell and Xinyi Li as part of UOW Nutrition and Dietetics Community Placement November 2013. Foods for Celebrations is full of healthy recipes to prepare. We hope these ideas help you be creative and inspire your celebration preparations. All recipes are either stamped GREEN or AMBER and meet the Fresh Tastes @ School criteria. We’ve tried to keep all recipes GREEN, but a few AMBER ideas were included for variety. 2 DELICIOUS, NUTRITIOUS AND FUN FOODS But it’s just a bit of chocolate... Foods for celebrations often include cakes, chocolates, lollies, meat pies, sausage rolls and soft drinks. There is nothing wrong with an occasional treat, but unhealthy choices have become the norm rather than the exception. Treats being used as classroom rewards, birthday celebrations, sausage sizzle fundraisers, parties and vending machines, constantly expose children to high-fat, high-sugar, low-nutrient choices. This constant exposure to unhealthy foods makes it difficult for children to learn how to make healthy food choices. Parties and celebrations provide a unique opportunity to support healthy eating habits and help make healthy eating fun and exciting for children. This provides children with a consistent message and practical modelling ideas for parents and educators. ILLAWARRA SHOALHAVEN LOCAL HEALTH DISTRICT 3 Little tricks to fun celebrations! 3 Use colourful disposable table cloths and utensils.

Move Well Eat Well Healthy Fundraising – themes and recipes BBQs and Sausage Sizzles BBQs and sausage sizzles are popular school events. They can be great for fundraising and introducing the school community to a wide range of tasty and healthy foods that support the Move Well Eat Well messages. Buying tips: • Work with your local butcher to see if they can add grated vegies to hamburger patties. • Sausages have come a long way – ask your local butcher if they make varieties with added vegetables or different flavoured sausages to increase the variety. • Many supermarkets sell pre-made lentil and vegie burgers – these can be a great alternative. Preparation ideas: • Choose lean cuts of meat such as chicken breasts or make your own burgers with lean beef mince. • Use the following recipes to make vegie burgers. These are cheap and easy to prepare. • Try barbecued corn on the cob or other vegies such as zucchini, mushrooms, onions, eggplant or capsicum • Add some colour to the event - make vegie kebabs by skewering chunks of different fruit and vegetables (e.g. pineapple, capsicum, mushrooms, zucchini and onion). • Peel and wrap bananas in foil then grill on the BBQ for a sweet treat Greening up your sausage sizzle: • Try wholemeal and wholegrain bread. • Serve all sausages with some vegetables such as BBQ onion, diced fresh tomato and lettuce. • Talk to your local butcher about supplying lower fat sausages for your next event • Have a variety of other salads on offer such as pasta salad, green salad or coleslaw (made with reduced fat mayonnaise). • Provide plenty of water to drink, rather than soft drink or cordial.
