Does the label ‘Made in Canada’ single out the truly ‘Canadian’ car? Canada has long been a major player in the auto industry— it was the world’s second largest producer of cars in the 1920s and ’30s. Is a car Canadian because it is built in Canada, by Canadians, for Canadians, with Canadian materials? How important is all of this in measuring a car’s ‘Canadian-ness’?

In the early days of car-making, every vehicle was hand-crafted by individual craftsmen in small shops. As time passed, car companies employed tradesmen in ever-larger factories to increase production. Today, cars pour off of highly-mechanized assembly lines—a system pioneered by Henry Ford in 1908.

Does the method of production—the way that Canadians work— affect how ‘Made in Canada’ a car truly is?

Canada is a well-known producer of raw materials, but Canadian companies also process these materials and form them into advanced parts. In the past few decades, auto-parts production has become very important to Canada’s economy.

This car is an example of Canada’s finest craftsmanship. The McLaughlin Company of Oshawa, Ontario, was originally a 3.3A1 McLaughlin Buick Royal Tour Car carriage-maker. In 1907, Sam McLaughlin partnered with Artifact no. 1986.0157 American William Durant, head of Buick, to form the McLaughlin Buick Company. In 1918, it officially became GM Canada.

McLaughlin built this car to carry the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York on their 1927 Canadian tour. Prince Edward was so impressed that he ordered a McLaughlin Buick for his official limousine when he became king.

Cette voiture illustre le grand talent des travailleurs canadiens. À l’origine, la société McLaughlin d’Oshawa, en Ontario, fabriquait des véhicules hippomobiles. The Canadian-made Le Roy was actually a close copy of the popular American —note the curved dash. This car was produced by the Le Roy Manufacturing Co., founded in 1899 by Nelson and Milton Good of Kitchener (then Berlin), 3.4A1 Le Roy Artifact no. 1975.0215 Ontario. The Le Roy was the first gasoline-powered automobile to be manufactured in quantities for sale in Canada. At this time, electric and steam-powered cars were still more popular than cars with internal combustion engines.

The Le Roy company remained in business until 1907.

Ford created the Mercury Meteor specifically for the Canadian market in 1949. It was popular in Canada for many years, and in 1960 was introduced to the American market. The Meteor was discontinued in 1976, by which time nearly 600,000 had 3.5A1 Mercury Meteor Artifact no. 1985.0108 been produced in Ford of Canada’s Oakville, Ontario plant.

This Meteor was built under the Auto Pact (1965-2000)—a North American trade agreement that bolstered Canada’s auto industry.

Canadians remember the Bricklin with mixed emotions. In 1974, American Malcolm Bricklin used funding from New Brunswick’s government to set up two manufacturing plants—in Saint 3.6A1 Bricklin John and Minto, New Brunswick. Despite its unique design and Artifact no. 1975.0622 special features, the Bricklin was actually built with Ford and American Motors components.

Though it was assembled in Canada, the Bricklin was only sold in the United States. Bricklin Canada closed its doors in 1976, after manufacturing fewer than 3,000 cars.

C’est avec des sentiments mitigés que les Canadiens se rappellent la Bricklin. En 1974, l’Américain Malcolm Bricklin s’est servi des subsides du gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick pour installer ses deux usines – l’une à Saint John et l’autre à Minto, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Malgré son design spécial et ses caractéristiques originales, la Bricklin était en fait fabriquée avec des pièces provenant des sociétés Ford et American Motors.

The Volvo 740 GL was designed and developed in Sweden. In 1963, Volvo became the first automaker from outside of North America to set up an assembly plant on the continent. Volvo chose to open its plant in Canada because they believed their 3.7A1 Volvo Artifact no. 1999.0114 cars—solid, safe, and well-suited to winter driving conditions— would be strong sellers in the Canadian market.

Canadian workers assembled the cars, which arrived by ship in kit form. Few domestic parts were added. Volvo’s Canadian plant, located in Halifax, closed in 1998.

La Volvo 740 GL a été conçue et construite en Suède. En 1963, Volvo a été le premier constructeur automobile de l’extérieur de l’Amérique du Nord à ouvrir une usine de montage sur notre continent. Si ce constructeur a choisi de s’installer au Canada, c’est parce qu’il estimait que ses voitures – solides, sûres et bien adaptées aux conditions de conduite hivernale – se vendraient bien sur le marché canadien.

Les ouvriers canadiens assemblaient les voitures, qui arrivaient par bateau en pièces détachées, et y intégraient quelques pièces de fabrication canadienne. L’usine de Volvo, située à Halifax, a fermé ses portes en 1998.

This car is the first Canadian-made Toyota to be sold in Canada—built in Toyota’s Cambridge, Ontario factory. It was sold to Claudette Millar, the mayor of Cambridge. Over the next ten years, more than 1.5 million Corollas were manufactured in 3.7bA1 Toyota Corolla Artifact no. Canada—many for export to the United States.

The Corolla is Toyota’s most popular model. It is second in sales among all brands in Canada. The Corolla, like Ford’s Model T, can be called a ‘world car’—30 million Corollas have been sold internationally since 1966.*
