Lucero, Chair This thesis presents the results of investigations made into eight looter’s trenches penetrating a monumental structure known as the Acropolis at the Maya site of Yalbac, Belize. The results of these investigations are used to analyze the amount of human labor invested in various aspects of the construction of the structure. The figures generated by this analysis are used to draw comparisons between energetic investment at Yalbac and similar investment at the major Maya sites of Copán and Tikal. Based on this comparison, some possibilities are postulated regarding the differences in political power among the elites of the three sites, and regarding the position of Yalbac in Maya political history. Energetic investment in monumental architecture, in terms of labor consumed in construction, is an important measurement of political power. Private residential structures, in particular, represent the varying abilities of their inhabitants to command the labor of others. The energetic analysis of architecture is a body of methods and experimentally-derived data that can be used to calculate the amount of labor invested in construction projects. 5 The Acropolis at Yalbac, Belize is a good example of a monumental Maya palace, where ancient rulers acquired the labor of others for their own use. The eight major looter’s trenches into the acropolis were cleared and profiled. The profile drawings were used to illuminate the construction history of the Acropolis. Hypothesized construction costs derived from this analysis are discussed in terms of how they reveal differences in the political power of the Yalbac rulers compared to elites at Copán and Tikal, and what that might mean with regard to elite history and changes in political circumstances at Yalbac. Tentative conclusions reached suggest that the political elite at the three sites employed acquired surplus labor in different ways. The emphasis in the construction of the acropolis palace at Yalbac suggests an emphasis on the diversion of acquired labor for private purposes.     2 The Ceramics of Tikal T. Patrick Culbert More than 40 years of archaeological research at Tikal have pro- duced an enormous quantity of ceramics that have been studied by a variety of investigators (Coggins 1975; Culbert 1963, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1993; Fry 1969, 1979; Fry and Cox 1974; Hermes 1984a; Iglesias 1987, 1988; Laporte and Fialko 1987, 1993; Laporte et al. 1992; Laporte and Iglesias 1992; Laporte, this volume). It could be argued that the ceram- ics of Tikal are better known than those from any other Maya site. The contexts represented by the ceramic collections are extremely varied, as are the formation processes to which they were subjected both in Maya times and since the site was abandoned. This chapter will report primarily on the ceramics recovered by the University of Pennsylvania Tikal Project between 1956 and 1970. The information available from this analysis has been significantly clar- ified and expanded by later research, especially that of the Proyecto Nacional Tikal (Hermes 1984a; Iglesias 1987, 1988; Laporte and Fialko 1987, 1993; Laporte et al. 1992; Laporte and Iglesias 1992; Laporte, this volume). Lomitola ii ABSTRACT Small anthropomorphic figures, most often referred to as “Charlie Chaplins,” appear in ritual deposits throughout the ancient Maya sites of Belize during the late Preclassic and Early Classic Periods and later, throughout the Petén region of Guatemala. Often these figures appear within similar cache assemblages and are carved from “exotic” materials such as shell or jade. At its endpoint, Buddhism in India was greatly diminished, and Hinduism was predominant, and religious and secular building styles had taken forms, a great regional variation, which they largely survived until and after the major changes that result from the arrival of the first Islam, and then the Europeans. Much of the early Indian architecture was wood, which is almost always dilapidated or burned, or brick, which is often taken away for reuse. Montgomery ii ABSTRACT Ancient populations across the globe successfully employed wetland agricultural techniques in a variety of environmentally and climatically diverse landscapes throughout prehistory. Within the Maya Lowlands, these agricultural features figure prominently in the region comprised of northern Belize and southern Quintana Roo, an area supporting low-outflow rivers, large lagoons, and numerous bajo features. Along the banks of the Hondo and New Rivers, the Maya effectively utilized wetland agricultural practices from the Middle Preclassic to the Terminal Classic Periods (1000 B.C.—A.D. 950). A number of past archaeological projects have thoroughly examined the construction and impact of these swampland features. After four decades of study, a more precise picture has formed in relation to the roles that these ditched field systems played in the regional development of the area. However, a detailed record of the full spatial extent, combined construction costs, and potential agricultural productivity has not been attempted on a larger scale. This thesis will highlight these avenues of interest through data obtained from high- and medium-resolution satellite imagery and manipulated through geographic information systems (GIS) technology. The research explores environmental factors and topographic elements dictating the distribution of such entities, the energetic involvement required to construct and maintain the systems, and the efficiency of wetland techniques as compared to traditional milpa agriculture.
