Mexborough. 123 WWDship 1293 acres; in 1871 the population of the former was 5011, and of the hI.tter, 4316. l\Iexborough is a. principal station on the Sheffield and DOllca8ter branch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. Andrew F. W. Montagu, Esq. (the lord of the manor) and the Earl of Mexborough are the principal ownE'rs. The market is held on Saturday. The Don Iron Works and two large glass bottlfl manufactories are in this township, as well as a. pottery and works for making sanitary tubes. There are also quarries for building or grinding purposes. A loCAL BOARD OF HEALTH has been formed here, of which Mr. P. Waddington is chairman; Mr. Lockwood, clerk;' and Mr. White, inspector of nuisances. The town 'is lighted with gas, which is paid for at the annual rate of 4i's. per lamp. The OHURCH, an ancient structure, consisting of nave, chancel, south aisle, and tower surmounted by a short spire, was reseated and partially restored in 1869. In the church are two stained glass windows, one Ca lancet) in memory of the late Mr. Oharles Tandy, and the other (a triplet) in remembrance of the late :Mr. Charles Dickinson. The living is a vicarage, valued at £360, in the patronage of the Archdeacon of York, and in the incumbency of the Rev. Henry Ellershaw, M.A. The vicarage house was built in :t834 by the patron, with money derived from church sources, and enlarged and improved at the expense of the Ecclesiastical Oommissioners in 1877. An h"'DEPENDENT CHAPEL was erected in 1868, at a cost of about £1000; the Rev. T. J. Leslie is minister. The WESLEYANS, the PRIMITIVE METHODISTS, the METHODIST NEW CONNEXION, and the UNITED FREE METHODISTS, have also places ofworsbip here. The BURIAL BOARD, which was formed in 1872, consists of nine members: the Rev. H. Ellershaw is chairman, and Mr. Bingham the clerk. A new Burial Ground of 4 acres, equally divided between the Church and the ~onconformists, was opened for interments on March 4, 1878. The buildings, consisting of two chapels, a keeper's residence, and a dead-house, are handsome erections, and the grounds are tastefully laid out. The NATIONAL ScHOOL, and the house for the master, are fine stone buildings, erected by subscription in 1864. The SCHOOL BoARD was formed on J'lIarch 30, 1875, and now consists of the Rev. H. Ellershaw (chairman), Mr. Dickinson (vice-chairman), and Messrs. Asquith, Fletcher, and H. Tyas. Mr. W. P. Holmes is the clerk. The Board has built two Infant Schools, one at each end of the town, called respectively Doncaster Road and Garden Street Schools. They have been built at a cost of £4810, and are estimated to accommodate 200 children each. The SHEFFIELD BANK has a branch here, for which they erected, in 1875, a substantial structure at a cost of £6000. The WORKING MEN's CLUB, Doncaster Road, was established on January 1, 1878.
