The Don Iron Works and two large glass bottlfl manufactories are in this township, as well as a. pottery and works for making sanitary tubes. There are also quarries for building or grinding purposes. A loCAL BOARD OF HEALTH has been formed here, of which Mr. P. Waddington is chairman; Mr. Lockwood, clerk;' and Mr. White, inspector of nuisances. The town 'is lighted with gas, which is paid for at the annual rate of 4i's. per lamp. The OHURCH, an ancient structure, consisting of nave, chancel, south aisle, and tower surmounted by a short spire, was reseated and partially restored in 1869. In the church are two stained glass windows, one Ca lancet) in memory of the late Mr. Oharles Tandy, and the other (a triplet) in remembrance of the late :Mr. Charles Dickinson. The living is a vicarage, valued at £360, in the patronage of the Archdeacon of York, and in the incumbency of the Rev. Henry Ellershaw, M.A. The vicarage house was built in :t834 by the patron, with money derived from church sources, and enlarged and improved at the expense of the Ecclesiastical Oommissioners in 1877.
