Zobar & Genc: Biology of Queen of Spain Fritillary 237 BIOLOGY OF THE QUEEN OF SPAIN FRITILLARY, ISSORIA LATHONIA (LEPIDOPTERA: NYMPHALIDAE) DAMLA ZOBAR1 AND HANIFE GENC1 1Department of Plant Protection, Agricultural Faculty, Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University, 17100 Canakkale, Turkey ABSTRACT The biology and the life cycle of Issoria lathonia (Nymphalidae) (Linnaeus 1758) on its host plant, Viola tricolor L. (Violaceae), are described from laboratory studies. In the laboratory eggs are laid singly on the host plant leaves as well as on the surfaces of plastic screen cages. Newly hatched larvae aggregate and feed on the host plant leaves. Later instars disperse on the plant and continue to feed on leaves and flowers. Head capsule widths, and weight and size measurements show that larvae develop through 5 instars. The larvae crawl off the host plant and pupate off the host. The life cycle from egg to adult requires 23-31 d at 26°C, and 16:8 (L:D) photoperiod in the laboratory. The butterfly has been reared continuously in the laboratory for about 2 years. (Violaceae) basado sobre estudios de laboratorio. En el laborato- rio los huevos están puestos individualmente sobre las hojas de la planta hospedera igual como sobre la superficie de la tela plástica de las jaulas. Las larvas recién nacidas se agregan y se alimentan sobre las hojas de la planta hospedero. Los instares posteriores se dispersan sobre la planta y continúan su alimentación sobre las hojas y flores. -

Analyzing life history traits of butterfly communities and faunas frequently reveals a generalist-specialist continuum as the main gradient, where species using wide arrays of resources, with good dispersal ability and fast development are distinguished from those using specialised resources, having limited dispersal ability and developing slowly. To ascertain the validity of the generalist- specialist approach for an intermediately species-rich Central European fauna, we analyzed ten life history traits for 136 species of butterflies currently occurring in the Czech Republic, using principal correspondence analysis (PCA) and controlling for phylogeny. The main gradient extracted indeed revealed a generalist-specialist continuum, while the gradient perpendicular to the main axis distin- guished between small-bodied polyvoltine species feeding on small herbaceous plants and large-bodied monovoltine species feeding on grasses or woody plants. We coin “constrained voltinism continuum” for the second gradient and argue that it reflects the effect of anti-herbivore strategies of larval host plants on butterfly development. -

It is based on a concatenated alignment of the mitochondrial gene COI and up to 11 nuclear gene fragments, using Bayesian inference of phylogeny. To avoid analytical biases that could result from our region-focus sampling, our European tree was grafted upon a global genus- level backbone butterfly phylogeny for analyses. In addition to a consensus tree, we provide the posterior distribution of trees and the fully-concatenated alignment for future analyses. -

It belongs to an extremely heterogeneous group. This unique and endemic race, ‘hybrida’ is found only in the Nilgiri Hills of South India, while the other race ‘castetsi’ is found in the hills South of Nilgiris. The life cycle on its host plant Viola pilosa Blume is being reported after thirty years from the Nilgiris. The stages from egg to adult take 60-64 days at 26˚C. Pelopidas thrax, a new species for the Island of Kós and an update of its distribution in Greece (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea) Sylvain Cuvelier Abstract. During a journey (20–28 September 2007) on the island of Kós, a few days were spent to butterfly observation (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea). For the first time, the presence of Pelopidas thrax (Hübner, 1821) is documented. Male and female, dorsal and ventral side, are figured. Observations from the islands of Ródos, Kastellórizo and Lesvos are discussed and the Greek distribution of P. thrax is updated. Confirmation is also given concerning the presence of Argynnis pandora ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) on the island of Kós. A table with all the observations of butterflies during this trip is included. Samenvatting. Pelopidas thrax, een nieuwe soort voor het eiland Kós en een actualisering over zijn verspreiding in Griekenland (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea) Gedurende een verblijf (20–28 september 2007) op het eiland Kós, werden enkele dagen gespendeerd aan vlinderobservatie (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea). Voor het eerst wordt de aanwezigheid van Pelopidas thrax (Hübner, 1821) gedocumenteerd. Bovenzijde en onderzijde van mannetje en wijfje worden afgebeeld. Observaties op de eilanden Ródos, Kastellórizo en Lesbos worden besproken en de Griekse verspreiding van P. thrax wordt geactualiseerd. Ook de aanwezigheid van Argynnis pandora ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) op het eiland Kós wordt bevestigd. Er is een tabel met alle vlinderobservaties van deze trip. Résumé. After completing immigration formalities and collecting our luggage, we made our way into the arrivals area where we were met by Florin, our local guide, who showed us to the exit and to our bus where we met our driver, Christian, who quickly loaded our luggage. Leaving the airport, we made our way onto the E60 and drove towards Ploiesti and on north-westward, through the Sub-Carpathian hills, and the towns of Breaza and Sinaia. Along the way we saw Western Jackdaw, White Stork, Starlings and Hooded Crows. Near Sinaia, we paused for a comfort/coffee stop. Around the OMV Services, we found a rather worn Green- underside Blue butterfly and Silver-Y moth, together with both Seven- and Two-spot Ladybirds. Continuing, our route took us through Busteni, before turning west to Rasnov. Additional species noted included Common Buzzard, Raven, House Martin and a Fox. -

A checklist of Papilionoidea of the Saur Mountains is presented with 159 butterfly species (Hesperiidae: 15; PapiHonidae: 7; Pieridae: 17; Nymphalidae: 71; Lycaenidae: 49). The specific status of Erebia sibirica Staudinger, 1881 is confirmed. Araschnia levana (Linnaeus, 1758), Clossiana selenis (Eversmann, 1837), Phengaris alcon (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) and Aricia nicias (Meigen, 1829) are reported for the Saur for the first time. Introduction The Saur is a small mountain range which is a part of the Tarbagatai mountain system; it is situated on the border between Eastern Kazakhstan and China south-eastwards from Zaisan lake and the Black Irtysh River (Figs 1 -6). To the north it is bordered by the Zaisan depression, and the Chilikty depression separates it from the Tarbagatai in the south. -
