Sawflies (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) in the Northeast of the Czech Republic with Special Regard to Spruce Forests

Holuša Department of Forest Protection and Entomology, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Prague, Czech Republic ABSTRACT: Sawflies were collected in the northeast of the Czech Republic using Townes type Malaise traps. Traps were placed in eleven young Norway spruce (Picea abies) forests during the period from 1998 to 1999. Localities cover altitudes from 230 to 1,000 m a.s.l. In total, 285 species of Symphyta have been recently known from the study area (Xyelidae – 1, Pamphiliidae – 7, Argidae – 10, Cimbicidae – 3, Diprionidae – 5, Tenthredinidae – 252, Siricidae – 1, Xiphydriidae – 1, Cephidae – 5). The majority of the species have large distributional ranges and their host plants are forest tree species. Most of the sawflies were obtained from Malaise traps located in the young spruce stands, and therefore the silvicolous species prevail. Neodineura arquata represents a new genus and species and Heptamelus dahlbomi a new species for the fauna of the Czech Republic. Nine species have been classified as endangered and twenty-one species have been classified as vulnerable. Pristiphora robusta has been deleted from the list. These data highlight the continued range expansion of exotic species across North America. These new records also indicate that our collective knowledge of Pacific Northwest arthropod biodiversity and biogeography is underdeveloped, even for a relatively well known and species-poor group of insects. -

Ce travail est inédit car aucune liste des Symphytes de France n’a jamais été publiée. Nous avons appliqué pour ce travail les travaux les plus récents, notamment ceux de notre collègue français Jean LACOURT qui a fortement fait évoluer la classification des Tenthredinidae. Dans cette liste, nous avons éliminé les espèces anciennement citées (avant 1950) sans localités ni dates précises et qui n’ont pas été retrouvées dans les collections des différents musées français mais nous avons inclus les espèces nouvelles pour la France ou pour la science, dont les publications sont en cours ou sous presse. Abstract. Nematinae is one of the largest subfamilies in the sawfly family Tenthredinidae, but internal relationships are unknown in the absence of any formal phylogenetic analysis. To understand the internal phylogeny of Nematinae, we sequenced a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene and the nuclear elongation factor-1a gene from thirteen outgroup taxa and sixty-eight nematine species, the ingroup taxa of which represent all major genera and subgenera within the subfamily. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian phyloge- netic analyses of the DNA sequence data show that: (1) Nematinae are monophy- letic in a broad sense which includes Hoplocampa, Susana and the tribe Cladiini, which have been classified often into separate subfamilies; together with Craterocercus, these taxa form a paraphyletic basal grade with respect to the remaining Nematinae, but among-group relationships within the grade remain weakly resolved; (2) the remainder of the ingroup, Nematinae s. str, is monophy- letic in all combined-data analyses; (3) within Nematinae s. str, the ‘Higher’ Nematinae is divided into three groups, Mesoneura and the large tribes Nematini and Pristiphorini; (4) although the traditional classifications at the tribal level are largely upheld, some of the largest tribes and genera are obviously para- or polyphyletic; (5) according to rate-smoothed phylogenies dated with two fossil calibration points, Nematinae originated 50–120 million years ago. -

Z in o v jev & V e l i V k b e r g Zusammenfassung Die Larven der Nematinae (Hymenoptera, Tenthredinidae) sind gewöhnlich freilebend. Ausnahmen stellen die Triben Hoplocampini, Pseudodineurini, Pristolini und die folgenden Nematini dar: Decanematus ( = Amauronematus-viduatus-Gruppe), Pontopristia, Amauronematus-longiserra-Gruppe, Polynematus der Subtribus Nematina, die gesamte Subtribus Euurina (Euura und Pontania einschließlich der Subgenera Phyllocolpa und Eupontania), Micronematus, und Sharliphora der Subtribus Pristiphorina, sowie das nearktische Genus Neopareophora mit einer unsicheren taxonomischen Stellung. Deren Larven sind zumindest im ersten Larvalstadium entweder endophytisch oder auf andere Weise nicht typisch freilebend. Die Biologie der aufgeführten Blattwespen wird kurz diskutiert. Es wird vermutet, daß auch Nepionema, die wahrscheinlich mit Rhododendron assoziiert ist, zumindest im frühen Stadium versteckt lebt. Das Eiablageverhalten und die Gailerregung der blattrollenden Pontania wird beschrieben. Summary The larvae of Nematinae (Hymenoptera, Tenthredinidae) are usually free-feeding, except for the tribes Hoplocampini, Pseudodineurini, Pristolini, and the following Nematini: Decanematus (= Amauronematus viduatus-group), Pontopristia, Pie. Amauronematus longiserra-group, Polynematus of the subtribe Nematina, the whole subtribe Euurina (Euura and Pontania including the subgenera Phyllocolpa and Eupontania), Micro nematus and Sharliphora of the subtribe Pristiphorina, and also the Nearctic genus Neopareophora with an uncertain taxonomic position. Their larvae are either endophytous or otherwise not typically free-living, at least in the earliest stage. The biology of all these sawflies is briefly discussed. -

Nevertheless, our understanding of the evolution and diversity of insect defenses remains limited, since most studies have focused on visual signaling of defenses against birds, thereby implicitly underestimating the impact of insectivorous insects. In the larvae of sawflies in the family Tenthredinidae (Hymenoptera), which feed on various plants and show diverse lifestyles, two distinct defensive strategies are found: easy bleeding of deterrent hemolymph, and emission of volatiles by ventral glands. Here, we used phylogenetic information to identify phylogenetic correlations among various ecological and defensive traits in order to estimate the relative importance of avian versus invertebrate predation. Results: The mapping of 12 ecological and defensive traits on phylogenetic trees inferred from DNA sequences reveals the discrete distribution of easy bleeding that occurs, among others, in the genus Athalia and the tribe Phymatocerini. By contrast, occurrence of ventral glands is restricted to the monophyletic subfamily Nematinae, which are never easy bleeders. Both strategies are especially effective towards insectivorous insects such as ants, while only Nematinae species are frequently brightly colored and truly gregarious. Among ten tests of phylogenetic correlation between traits, only a few are significant. None of these involves morphological traits enhancing visual signals, but easy bleeding is associated with the absence of defensive body movements and with toxins occurring in the host plant. -

Hara (Betulaceae) and Lithocarpus edulis (Makino) Nakai (Fagaceae) for Tremex apicalis Matsumura, 1912 (Siricidae), Quercus crispula Blume (Fagaceae) for Periclista erythrogramma Togashi, 1999 (Tenthredinidae) and Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. (Faba- ceae) for Lataxiphyda nodai (Togashi, 1982) and Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb.) Koidz. (Aralia- ceae) for Xiphydria ogasawarai Matsumura, 1927 (Xiphydriidae). New distribution records are: Aglaostigma naitoi Togashi, 1972 (Tenthredinidae) from Kyushu and Aglaostigma yasumatsui Togashi, 1970, Euura tibialis (Newman, 1837) and Periclista erythrogramma Togashi, 1999 (Ten- thredinidae) from Hokkaido. New collection records are given for two rare species, Xiphydria kanba Shinohara, Hara & Smith, 2020 (Xiphydriidae) and Xyela kamtshatica Gussakovskij, 1935 (Xyelidae), and a “drumming” behavior of the male is newly recorded for Xiphydria ogasawarai (Xiphydriidae).
