Autumn 2019 Beechill Bulbs Welcome to our autumn 2019 collection. As always, bursting with colour and ideas to transform your areas into dazzling displayof warmth and vibrance at an otherwise cold and dull time of the year. Biodiversity & Sustainability This subject has gathered significant momentum now with everincreasing interest in more nature friendly varieties - Alliums,Crocus etc., as well as an increasing scrutiny on the methods ofgrowing and harvesting. This is reflected in the ongoing interest in the increasing amount of organic bulb Beechill Bulbs Ltd lines that are now available (pages 110 to 115). This impacted on bulb sizes, yields and disease.

We have never had so many problems in fitting the range of plants we have “on our books” into the available space! We always try and keep our lists “democratic” and balanced although at times our prejudices show and one or two groups rise to the top. This year we are offering an unprecedented range of calochortus in a multiplicity of sizes, colours and flower shapes from the charming fairy lanterns of C. albidus through to the spectacular, later-flowering mariposas with upward-facing bowl-shaped flowers in a rich tapestry of shades from canary-yellow through to lilac, lavender and purple. Counterpoised to these flashy dandies we are offering an assortment of choice muscari whose quiet charm, softer colours and Tulipa vvedenskyi Tecophilaea cyanocrocus Violacea persistent flowering make them no less effective in the winter and spring garden. Standouts among this group are the deliciously scented duo, M. muscarimi and M. macrocarpum and the striking and little known tassel-hyacith, M. weissii. While it has its devotees, many gardeners are unaware of the qualities of the large and diverse tribe of “onions”, known as alliums.

  • Fall 2013 NARGS
Rock Garden uar terly Fall 2013 NARGS to ADVERtISE IN thE QuARtERly CoNtACt [email protected] Let me know what yo think A recent issue of a chapter newsletter had an item entitled “News from NARGS”. There were comments on various issues related to the new NARGS website, not all complimentary, and then it turned to the Quarterly online and raised some points about which I would be very pleased to have your views. “The good news is that all the Quarterlies are online and can easily be dowloaded. The older issues are easy to read except for some rather pale type but this may be the result of scanning. There is amazing information in these older issues. The last three years of the Quarterly are also online but you must be a member to read them. These last issues are on Allen Press’s BrightCopy and I find them harder to read than a pdf file. Also the last issue of the Quarterly has 60 extra pages only available online. Personally I find this objectionable as I prefer all my content in a printed bulletin.” This raises two points: Readability of BrightCopy issues versus PDF issues Do you find the BrightCopy issues as good as the PDF issues? Inclusion of extra material in online editions only. Do you object to having extra material in the online edition which can not be included in the printed edition? Please take a moment to email me with your views Malcolm McGregor <[email protected]> CONTRIBUTORS All illustrations are by the authors of articles unless otherwise stated.

Again, we are coming to you with a new catalogue and again we are including many new varieties in it, probably not so many as we would like, but our stocks do not increase as fast as the demand for our bulbs. We hope for many more novelties in the next catalogue. Last season we had one more successful expedition – we found and collected 3 juno irises never before cultivated (we hope that they will be a good addition to our Iris collection) and many other nice plants, too. In garden we experienced a very difficult season. The spring came very early – in the first decade of April the temperature unexpectedly rose up to +270 C, everything came up, flowered and finished flowering in few days and then during one day the temperature fell as low as –80 C. A lot of foliage was killed by a returned frost. As a result the crop of bulbs was very poor. The weather till the end of June was very dry – no rain at all, only hot days followed by cold nights. But then it started to rain. There were days with the relative air humidity up to 98%. The drying of harvested bulbs was very difficult. I was forced to clean one of my living rooms in my house, to heat it and to place there the boxes with Allium and Tulipa bulbs to save them from Penicillium.

International Rock Gardener ISSN 2053-7557 Number 60 The Scottish Rock Garden Club December 2014 ---International Rock Gardener--- December 2014 The IRG Team sends our very best wishes and thanks to all readers and contributors around the world as we come to the close of 2014. This issue of IRG is our 60th – quite a milestone for what was begun as a one year experimental project. Production of the magazine does keep the IRG Team busy but of course, none of this would be possible without the generous input of our authors and photographers: To all of you - a special greeting of warm appreciation from Margaret, ZZ, Ian, Glassford and Richard. “Don’t tell me - more last minute editorial changes” from Theresa McCracken in Oregon So far, winter in the Northern Hemisphere has been veering between cold and mild to a degree that will confuse most of our plants, while in the South a drought is expected which will lead to problems for growers there. These are, I suppose, problems which are visited upon us most years, in some way or another. Perhaps this struggle against nature’s vagaries is part of what drives us in our challenge to “conquer” the difficulties and the puzzles our gardens present to us? Or perhaps we are just all happily obsessed?
