It is mysinccre pleasure to welcome the four teams to the minor and senior county football finals in Cahir today_ Whereas the senior game is an all-south affair, in which Commercials and Moyle Rovers fight for honours, the minor final brings into opposition Newport, the cham pions of the north division and Goldcn-Kilfcaclc, the champions of the west. Tipperary football has a new bounce in its step as a result of significant successes during 1995. For a county starved of footballing glory, the victories of the senior team in the All·lreland 'S' championship and the minors in the Munster final were most welcome. These successes were tremendously important in themselves but they should also have the effect of increasing the county's belief in its footbaJling potentiaJ. \vith such self·belief greater success can be ach ieved as Clare proved in winning the All-Ireland senior hurling championship. This year we celebr.ue the centenary year of Tipperary's great achievement in winning the football and hurling All Irelands of 1895. In that year the famed Arravale Rovers Team, about whan Tom 0' Donoghue has wnttm so well in hisrcccntly launched history of the Arravalc Rovers club, won the first leg of the double when they beat Navan O'Mahony's. The hurling leg was won by glorious Tubbcradora. who were recently commemorated in an impressive monument in the parish of Boherlahan. Both these matches were played·in Jones's Road now Croke Parle:, on the same day and were \he first AII-Irelands to be played in that venue. Today, therefore, as we gather in eahir for the senior and minor county football finaJs, we can take pleasure in recalling the high achievements of Tipperary football in 1995 and the glorious memories of one hundnxl. years ago. Finally, I should like to thank the Cahirclub for hosting teday's games, the referees and match orficials whoare in charge and the Communications Committee for-the production of this program. I should like to thank all our supporters and wish them an afternoon of good football. seAN 0 F6GARTNGII. Cathaoirleach. Ennis Cathedral: The Building & Its People. Saturday 29th. August 2009 Presented by the Clare Roots Society Clare Roots Society The Clare Roots Society, brainchild of Ennisman Larry Brennan, was formed in April 2006 as an amateur family history group. The Society meets once a month in Ennis, and has approx. 50 members. Anyone with an interest in tracing their family tree is welcome to join. Some members are experienced genealogists while others are novices in the field. In addition to local members, we have some 'virtual' members who live overseas, but who follow our activities via email, and dream that they are in Clare. Activities are advertised in local press and in the Ennis Cathedral church bulletin. Under the Chairmanship of Declan Barron and his committee of Fiona de Buitleir, Eric Shaw, Larry Brennan & Paddy Waldron, guest speakers were arranged at past meetings including Paul O’Donnell of the South Galway genealogy group, Peter Beirne of 'The Manse' Local Studies library in Ennis, Jim Herlihy on the RIC, Liam Curran on Irish Soldiers in the British Army, Jonny Dillon of the Folklore Dept., UCD, and Dr. Pat Nugent of the University of Liverpool amongst others. From our own members, speakers have included Dr. Paddy Waldron, Gerry Kennedy, Ger Madden, Declan Barron, Eric Shaw, Robert Cullen, and Larry Brennan. In addition, we have run a number of hands-on computer workshops on genealogical research and the recording of data. The society works in partnership with Clare County Library in order to add to the wonderful fund of genealogy information already available on their website www.clarelibrary.ie Our biggest project to date, completed in 2008 with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland, involved transcription of the gravestones in the old Drumcliffe Cemetery.

He attended the Christian Brothers School in Marino, and later worked in the family business, a grocers and licensed premises. His first brush with politics came in 1905 when, with his brother Phil and uncle P.J., he attended the first Sinn Féin convention in 1905. Serving as a Sinn Féin councillor on Dublin Corporation from 1909 until 1922, he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913, although he never joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood. During the Easter 1916 Rising, Cosgrave served under Eamonn Ceannt at the South Dublin Union. His was not a minor role, and after the Rising he was sentenced to death. This was later commuted to penal servitude for life, and he was transported to Frongoch in Wales along with many other rebels. As public opinion began to favour the rebels, Cosgrave stood for election in the 1917 Kilkenny city by-election, and won despite being imprisoned. This was followed by another win the following year in Kilkenny North. Cosgrave took his seat in the First Dáil on his release from prison in 1919.

  • Annerville Awards to the 2008 Tipperary Sports Stars
Tiobraid Árann Abú - United Sports Panel 1959-2009 in conjunction with Bulmers Ltd Golden Jubilee Presentation of the Annerville Awards to the 2008 Tipperary Sports Stars 1 in Hotel Minella, Clonmel on Saturday, 31st January, 2009 United Sports Panel 2009: Back Row (left to right) Eamonn Wynne, Johnny O’Loughlin, Dave Hallinan, Seamus McCarthy, David Clancy, Liam Ó Donnchú; Front Row (left to right) Jimmy Cooney, Seamus King, James Holohan, Ken Conway, Richie Blanche. 2 Foreword When a number of sports enthusiasts got together in 1959, little did they realise that they were starting something that would stand the test of time and be still a force 50 years later. Led by Sean Barlow and the late Sean Lyons the United Sports Panel was formed. They felt the time was right to have an Award Scheme in the county to honour amateur sports stars in their chosen sports annually. In fact, one should note that these were the first such awards in the country. As well as honouring Tipperary’s outstanding amateur sportspersons the United Sports Panel had another aim, as expressed by the second chairman, the late Tom Halpin, when he presented the awards in 1964. He expressed the hope ‘that functions such as these, which brought the stars of various sports together, would help to promote unity in sport.’ Like all innovations, it was not without its teething problems. Finding ways to finance it and getting venues were just two of them. In the early days businesses in Clonmel were canvassed to sponsor the trophies. This problem was eliminated for the 1964 awards when Messrs Showerings Ltd.
