Incredible Delegates Prepare for Seattle!

The 2010 US- Leadership Program conference will take place in Seattle this summer from July 17-24, 2010. After a wildly successful Tenth Anniversary conference in Japan last summer, we are excited to return to the warm hospitality of the Emerald City. We will once again dive into all that Seattle has to offer: from spending an evening with Ichiro (well, watching him in action at a Mari- ners game while munching on hot-dogs) to cruising along Lake Washington and Lake Union.

We had a record turnout of Scott M. Johnson Fellows during the reunion weekend in Tokyo, and we expect this year to be no different. The USJF secretariat challenges all Fellows to beat last year’s record breaking attendance! We have some excellent guest speakers lined up for Fellows Weekend (July 22-24, 2010). US-Japan Foundation Chairman Tom Johnson will be making some remarks, followed by 2004-2005 Scott M. Johnson Fellow Chris Howard. James Bradley, author of the best- selling The Imperial Cruise, will be our keynote speaker on the evening of July 23.

USJLPers Unite in ! On April 23, 2010, Delegates, Scott M. Johnson Fellows and USJF staff gathered at Shunkoin Temple in Kyoto’s Myoshinji Temple Complex. Run by Taka Kawakami (08, 09), Shunkoin Temple was a beautiful spot for the USJLP Kansai pre-conference gathering. New Delegates Ryohei Nakagawa and Koichi Sughimoto (see page 2) had a chance to meet and mingle with Fellows from a variety of years. 6 The 2010 Executive Committee Meeting

The USJLP Executive Committee met in Honolulu, February 12-14, 2010, and had a very productive meeting. Here are the minutes.

The Role of the Executive Committee (EC): - Assist with Delegate selection. - Advise the Foundation on the Delegates program. - Assist with planning Fellow’s weekend as well as other events throughout the year. - The Bylaws had been written with the assumption that the program would be independent of the Foundation by the year 2003 - however, that has not yet happened. The Foundation has continued to support the program and thus the program is not an indepentend entity.

Selection of New Delegates - New Delegates were selected representing leadership in a broad cross section of professions - from the arts to civic leadership to business. - It was agreed that the application should be updated to solicit answers to the following questions: What does the applicant currently do (how are they a leader in their current field?). What will they contribute as a Delegate? What will they contribute to the program long term? And, if applicable, how might they contribute to US-Japan relations in a broader sense?

Promoting Public Relations: - A task force will be established to assist with upgrading the website. Foundation staff does not have the bandwidth to handle this task alone, and it was agreed that the Japanese EC members will work with interested Delegates and Fellows to formulate suggested changes, including the ability to highlight current Fellows through interviews/profiles. The Foundation will help determine what upgrades can be performed within a reasonable cost.

Review of the Last 10 Years: - The next anniversary will be the 15 year anniversary in Seattle. - The EC agreed to work with the Foundation to seek one Delegates from each country every year who can help explain the contributions. In addition, the EC advised making the payments as easy as possible - including having a table or other means for Delegates to donate on their last day of the conference. - The EC agreed that we need a strategic 10 year plan - this plan will be discussed further at the Seattle Meeting.

Suggestions Regarding the EC: - Each region has the ability to work closely with the Foundation to determine the best means for EC selection. - In general, EC membership should correspond with the status one had as a Delegate (US or Japanese Delegate). - It was agreed that two two-year terms for EC membership are advisable to ensure the continuity and institutional memory. Additional terms may be served in some cases. - The results of the EC meetings shall be transparent and open to all Fellows. The exception to this is the selection of Delegates, which will remain confidential. - Due to the different environments of Japan and the US, the respective operations of the USJLP EC might not be symmetrical.

US-Japan Foundation Board Decides to Launch Capital Campaign George Packard reports from New York: “The US-Japan Foundation’s board of trustees, at its April 9, 2010 meeting, decided to move forward with a capital campaign that will insure the long-term viability of the USJLP. The Board set a goal of $5 million to be achieved over the next six years. Roughly $2 million each will be sought from American and Japanese sources, and $1 million is the target to be raised from USJLP Scott Johnson Fellows. May Liang will head up the Fellows’ drive on the American side, and I will be in Japan in May and June to select a USJLPer on the Japanese side (you have been warned!). I am pleased to report that roughly $1,850,000 has been pledged by American members of the board as of April 15, 2010.”
