Radical Feminism and its Major Socio-Religious Impact… 45 Radical Feminism and its Major Socio-Religious Impact (A Critical Analysis from Islamic Perspective) Dr. Riaz Ahmad Saeed Dr. Arshad Munir Leghari ** ABSTRACT Women’s rights and freedom is one of the most debated subjects and the flash point of contemporary world. Women maintain a significant place in the society catered to them not only by the modern world but also by religion. Yet, the clash between Islamic and western civilization is that they have defined different set of duties for them. Islam considers women an important participatory member of the society by assigning them inclusive role, specifying certain fields of work to them, given the vulnerability they might fall victim to. Contrarily, Western world allows women to opt any profession of their choice regardless of tangible threats they may encounter. Apparently, the modern approach seems more attractive and favorable, but actually this is not plausible from Islamic point of view. Intermingling, co-gathering and sexual attraction of male and female are creating serious difficulties and problems for both genders, especially for women. Women are currently running many movements for their security, rights and liberties under the umbrella of “Feminism”. Due to excess of freedom and lack of responsibility, a radical movement came into existence which was named as ‘Radical Feminism’. This feminist movement is affecting the unique status of women in the whole world, especially in the west. This study seeks to explore radical feminism and its major impact on socio-religious norms in addition to its critical analysis from an Islamic perspective. -

The Impact of Matriarchal Traditions on the Advancement of Ashanti Women in Ghana Karen McGee What is the impact of a matriarchal tradition and the tradition of an African queenmothership on the ability of African women to advance in political, educational, and economic spheres in their countries? The Ashanti tribe of the Man people is the largest tribe in Ghana; it is a matrilineal society. A description of the precolonial matriarchal tradition among the Ashanti people of Ghana, an analysis of how the matriarchal concept has evolved in more contemporary governments and political situations in Ghana, and an analysis of the status of women in modern Ghana may provide some insight into the impact of the queenmothership concept. -

For more information, please contact the GRO team: [email protected] Anticommunal, antiegalitarian, antinurturing, antiloving: sex and the ‘irredeemable’ in Dworkin and MacKinnon ALEX DYMOCK Abstract: The work of Andrea Dworkin and Catharine A. MacKinnon on sex and sexuality has often been posed as adversary to the development of queer theory. Leo Bersani, in particular, is critical of the normative ambitions of their work, which he sees firstly as trying to ‘redeem’ sex acts themselves, and secondly as advocating for sexuality as a site of potential for social transformation. In this article, I argue that this is a misreading of their work. Drawing on Dworkin’s wide body of writing, and the early Signs essays of MacKinnon, I suggest that their work makes no such case for sex or sexuality. Rather, by bringing their analysis into conversation with Halberstam’s recent work on ‘shadow feminism’, I contend that Dworkin and MacKinnon’s anti- social, anti-pastoral and distinctly anti-normative vision of sex and sexuality shares many of the same features of queer theory, ultimately advocating for sex as ‘irredeemable’. -

While incarcerated for the attack, she penned the "S.C.U.M. Manifesto"—"The Society for Cutting Up Men." By doing so, Solanis appropriated the traditionally masculine manifesto genre, which had evolved from sov- ereign proclamations of the 1600s into a form of radical protest of the 1960s. Feminist appropriation of the manifesto genre can be traced as far back as the 1848 Seneca Falls Woman's Rights Convention, at which suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Martha Coffin, and Mary Ann McClintock parodied the Declara- tion of Independence with their "Declaration of Sentiments" (Campbell, 1989). -

ENVIRONMENTAL SURROUNDINGS DEFINING NATIONAL IDENTITIES by MEGAN TRENHOLM (Under the Direction of Susan Quinlan) ABSTRACT Throughout this thesis, three books will be discussed: A Bagaceira by José Américo de Almeida, Iracema by José de Alencar, and A Senhora by José de Alencar as well. These works will be interlinked based on their principle female characters and how their feminine characteristics are always in comparison with their environmental surroundings. Because they all deal with the flora and fauna of a specific historic place based on where the specific story takes place, all of them also correspond with the search for a national identity. In addition to the search for a national identity, each female character exemplifies the Persephone – Demeter myth and cyclical events that pertain to fertility. All of these works attempt to center on ecofeminism and the search for a “matrifocal” society rather than a patriarchal society. Initially, after the codification of German law in 1900, academic lectures were still based on a study of private law with reference to Roman law, the Pandectists and Germanic law as the basis for comparison. Since 1918, education in law focused only on national law while the legal-historical and comparative possibilities that were available to adapt the law were largely ignored. Students were unable to critically analyse the law or to resist the German socialist-nationalism system. They had no value system against which their own legal system could be tested.” Du Plessis W. 1 Paper Abstract What explains that in patriarchal societies it is the father who passes on his name to his child while in matriarchal societies the child bears the surname of his mother? The biological reality is the same in both cases: it is the woman who bears the child and gives birth to it. Thus the answer does not lie in biological differences but in cultural ones. So far in feminist literature the analysis relies on a patriarchal background. Not many attempts have been made to consider the way gender has been used in matriarchal societies. -

The paper goes on to examine Australian feminism's engagement with the state, focusing on the increasing role of feminists within government and policy-making bodies and the development of feminist theories. It then discusses macro-state agendas, such as economic rationalism, educational equity, and teacher education. The paper also reviews micro-political issues, such as feminist reform through regulation and accountability, naming and visibility issues, and the problems created by the growing "sophistication" of feminism in Australia. Devlin FRSC Follow this and additional works at: https://digitalcommons.schulichlaw.dal.ca/scholarly_works Part of the Law and Gender Commons, and the Law and Philosophy Commons Devlin: Transformation or Resistance 167 Feminism may pose the opportunity to conceptualize and nourish another, emancipatory side of power, a side that expands our horizons rather than curtails them, a side that nurtures our personhood rather than stultifies it, a side that fosters care for our inherent human dignity rather than inflaming· the festering sores of "anxious privitism"216 and possessive individualism. 217 Feminism, rather than working within and thereby reproducing the androcentric interpretation/imposition of power, may be able to challenge the very meaning of power itself. Difference,with its substantive emphasis on the ethic of care, may fit with this alternative conception of power. However, because of her unidimensional conception of power, MacKinnon understands "difference" as "powerlessness" rather than "power to".218 Although MacKinnon is correct to point out that, historically, the awareness of difference has operated to women's disadvantage, and that women's caring role has been part of their strategy forsurvival, we must be careful not to make this into an essentialist thesis that difference = domination/subordination. Such an approach ignores the factor of human - particularly male - agency in making this correlation. But, again, what has been socially constructed by males is capable of being ( de)reconstructed by females and profeminist males. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Ethnicity meets gender meets class in Australia Abstract Feminism in Australia is a political movement and a published discourse. Its activities range from Equal Employment Opportunity practices in the public service to 'cultural' production in such forms as academic literature and documentary film-making. For most immigrant women of non-English speaking background, the cultural arena of feminism is foreign, in many more ways than one. Feminism represents, to speak perhaps too stereo typically, a middle class 'Anglo' culture, far removed from everyday experience. And this despite well-meaning concern on the part of many feminists for those groups suffering compound oppressions of class and ethnicity, as well as gender. Symbolically, an almost cult concern is shown for the plight of the migrant woman outworker, and with considerable real justification. Yet this concern is from a singular cultural perspective: middle class libertarian liberalism, quite alien to the immediate needs and aspirations of its subjects.
