1 Designing Learning Resources in Language DESIGNING LEARNING RESOURCES IN LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING I. INTRODUCTION Today the entire world is moving speedily towards digitization and we have to learn new things using new technologies. Quality of teaching and students' learning is determined by the teachers who teach them. Well-trained teachers with required knowledge, skills and commitment can develop scientific and critical thinking, promote tolerance, and develop cultural and social values in them. Innovative technologies will make it possible to achieve these by providing new ways to teachers. However, these new technologies are placing more demands on teachers to learn how to use them in their teaching and learning processes. This great transformation is posing challenges to teachers and teacher educators in using technologies in creative and productive ways. Hence, we as teachers have to meet these new challenges by continuously acquiring new knowledge and skills to discharge our duties effectively. ICT can offer tremendous opportunities for capturing, storing, disseminating and communicating a wide variety of information. Rapid expansion of knowledge and availability of variety of ICT has made knowledge, inclusion and integration of ICT in teaching and learning inevitable for us now. Moreover, ICT can promote international collaboration and networking in education and provide more flexible and effective ways for professional development . It can also help in pre-service and in-service teacher training programs. In terms of designing teaching and learning materials, application software must be of real benefit. Application software is a computer program designed to help the user perform a specific activity. The word "application" is used because each program has a specific application for the user. For example, a word processor can assist the user to create notes, write a text, an article, a project paper, while a video game will not. This contrasts with system software, which is mainly concerned with running the computer. II. BENEFITS OF USING ICT IN LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING ICT in language teaching and learning • is motivating both for students and for teachers • offers a wide range of multimedia resources • offers opportunities for intensive one-to-one learning in a multimedia computer lab • offers access to a rich resource of authentic materials on the Internet • offers access to a wide range of authentic materials on CD-ROM and DVD • makes worldwide communication possible via email and via audio- and video-conferencing with native speakers • can open up a new range of self-access and distance learning opportunities III. USES OF ICT IN LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING • Use by students of materials that the teacher has created with generic software applications • Use of generic software applications such as Word and PowerPoint by students to create their own materials • Use by students of off-air audio and video recordings stored in digital format 1 • Use by students of audio and video recordings on commercially-produced CDs and DVD s IV. Uses of ICT in Language Teaching and Learning • Use by students of materials that the teacher has created with generic software applications • Use of generic software applications such as Word and PowerPoint by students to create their own materials • Use by students of off-air audio and video recordings stored in digital format • Use by students of audio and video recordings on commercially-produced CDs and DVDs • Use by students of audio and video recordings that the teacher has created with audio and video editing tools and materials of this type • Use of audio and video editing tools by students to create their own audio and video recordings • Use by students of commercially-produced multimedia CALL packages • Use by students of materials that the teacher has created and tailored to their needs using authoring programs • Use of the Web as a resource, as well as generic tools such as search engines for finding information • Use of Web 2.0 tools by students or by the teacher, including social networking sites • Use of email, e-pal and e-twinning schemes, tandem learning • Computer Aided Assessment • Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) - use of iPods, mobile phones and other mobile devices • Use of chat rooms • Use of MUDs, MOOs and MUVEs • Use of virtual worlds • Use of concordance programs • Use of tools falling into the category of speech technologies • Use by the teacher of whole-class presentation devices and software Terms explanation Concordancing software • A concordance: an alphabetical listing/index of the words in a text, given together with the contexts in which they appear. • A concordancer: a computer program that allows users to search a collection of authentic texts (i.e. a corpus) for multiple examples of selected words or phrases. E-twinning • schools are paired with another school elsewhere, • communicate using the Internet (e.g. by e-mail or video conferencing) • to collaborate, share and learn from each other MUD (Multi-User Dungeon or • A (usually text-based) multi-user simulation environment. Dimension) • Some are purely for fun and flirting, others are used for serious software development, or education purposes and all that lies in between. 2 • A significant feature of most MUDs: users can create things that stay after they leave and which other users can interact within their absence, thus allowing a world to be built gradually and collectively. MOO (Mud, Object Oriented) • One of several kinds of multi-user role-playing environments MUVE • sometimes called virtual worlds V. • Datapond – Data Driven Music Builder
DataPond – Data Driven Music Builder DataPond Data Driven Music Builder Over the past couple of months I have been attempting to teach myself to read music. This is something that I have been meaning to do for a long time. In high school the music teachers seemed to have no interest in students other than those with existing natural talent. The rest of us, they just taught appreciation of Bob Dylan. I can't stand Bob Dylan. So I never learned to read music or play an instrument. Having discovered the enjoyment of making stringed instruments such as the papermaché sitar, the Bad-Arse Mountain Dulcimer, a Windharp (inspired by this one), and a couple of other odd instruments. More recently I made a Lap Steel Slide guitar based on the electronics described in David Eric Nelson's great book “Junkyard Jam Band” and on Shane Speal's guide on building Lapsteels. I built mine out of waste wood palette wood and it connects to an old computer speaker system I pulled out of my junk box and turned to the purpose. It ended up sounding pretty good – to my ear at least. Anyway, I have instruments-a-plenty, but didn't know how to play'em so I decided to teach myself music. The biggest early challenge was reading music. I'm sure it would have been easier if a mathematician had been involved in designing the notation system. To teach myself I decided that reading sheet music and transcribing it into the computer would be a good way of doing it.
