NIEUWE RELEASES KLIK OP DE HOES VOOR DE SINGLE (Mits Beschikbaar) NIEUWE RELEASES KLIK OP DE HOES VOOR DE SINGLE (mits beschikbaar) At The Drive-In – In•ter A•li•a CD/LP/LPcoloured At The Drive-In, een regelrechte cultband inmiddels. De band rondom frontman Cedric Bixler (vocals) en Omar Rodríguez-López (guitar/vocals) stopte er in 2001 mee na acht jaar en viel uiteen in twee fantastische andere bands: The Mars Volta én Sparta. In 2012 kwam tot grote vreugde van velen (waaronder ikzelf) het bericht dat At The Drive-In weer bij elkaar kwam. Vorig jaar heb ik ze weer live mogen zien in de Melkweg en dat was als vanouds, ontzettend energiek en hard. Nu is het eindelijk tijd voor het eerste studiealbum in 17 jaar tijd, 'In•ter a•li•a' bestaat uit elf nummers met een klassieke At The Drive-In intensiteit die het wachten meer dan waard was. Ayreon –_ The Source 2CD+DVD/2LP/Boxset Met het album 'The Source' voegt Arjen Lucassen een nieuw hoofdstuk aan zijn indrukwekkende Ayreon oeuvre toe, waarvoor hij de basis midden jaren '90 al legde. 'The Source' biedt hetzelfde als waar Ayreon zijn toegewijde fans aan te danken heeft, namelijk een indrukwekkende cast bestaande uit de beste zangers en zangeressen, topmuzikanten, meeslepende songs, een overweldigend geluid en een intrigerend verhaal. Op dit album worden de karakters vertolkt door niemand minder dan James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Tommy Giles Rogers (Between the Buried and Me), Simone Simons (Epica), Mike Mills (Toehider), Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Michael Eriksen (Circus Maximus), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), Nils K. Rue (Pagan's Mind), Zaher Zorgati (Myrath), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) en Russell Allen (Symphony X). Speciale muzikale bijdragen worden geleverd door gitaristen Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big), Guthrie Govan (The Aristocrats, Asia, Steven Wilson), Marcel Coenen en keyboardspeler Mark Kelly (Marillion). Zoals op alle vorige albums, bespeelde Arjen Lucassen een grote variëteit van instrumenten, terwijl de uitzonderlijk getalenteerde drummer Ed Warby (o.a. Elegy, Gorefest, Hail Of Bullets) wederom unieke prestaties leverde. Klik op de hoes voor 'The Day That The World Breaks Down' waarop alle gastzangers te horen zijn. Mark Lanegan Band – Gargoyle CD/LP Misschien ligt het aan mij maar ik had nog nooit van het woord 'Gargoyle' gehoord, gelukkig hebben we google en blijkt dit een waterspuwer te zijn, ofwel gargouille. Wat dit precies met de plaat te maken heeft weet ik niet maar goed maar weer wat geleerd. Zoals vele van jullie wel weten was Mark Lanegan de frontman van Screaming Trees. Een band die vooral in de jaren 90 veel fans had in de indie/grunge hoek. Lanegan z'n stem is er eentje die je in het rijtje Leonard Cohen, Matt Berningen (The National) en Tom Waits kan zetten, een prachtige lage bariton stem. 'Gargoyle' is een heerlijk sferisch album met hier en daar wat jaren 80 invloeden. Dat icm de bijdragen van o.a. Josh Homme (QOTSA), Greg Dulli (The Afghan Wighs) en Duke Garwood maakt van dit album er eentje die zeker de moeite waard is! Slowdive – Slowdive CD/LP/LPLtd -coloured- Slowdive, de band rondom Rachel Goswell (vocalen, gitaar), Simon Scott (drums) én Neil Halstead (vocals, gitaar) bestaat officieel al sinds 1989. In 1995 viel de band uit elkaar maar gelukkig voor alle shoegaze/dream-pop fans kwamen ze na 19 jaar weer samen! Dit album is het vierde studio album en het eerste album sinds de band weer bij elkaar is, er werd door de fans dan ook reikhalzend uitgekeken naar het eerste album in 22 jaar door de vaandeldragers van bovengenoemde genres. En het resultaat is de plaat waarop we hoopte. Een combinatie van sprookjesachtige sferen en het gitaarwerk zoals we van hun gewend zijn maar dan nu in een zeer goed geproduceerde vorm! Afghan Whigs – In Spades CD/LP Afghan Whigs....ik kan me voorstellen dat het geheugen bij sommige even moet worden opgefist. De band rondom Greg Dulli (ook bekend van zijn zijproject The Twilight Singers) kende vooral veel succes in de jaren negentig waar ze onderdeel uitmaakte van de top in de grunge/alternatieve hoek. Met hits als 'Debonair' en 'Gentleman', beide overigens van het album 'Gentleman uit 1993) braken ze definitief door. Officieel bestaat de band al sinds 1986 en na twee 'break-ups' zijn ze inmiddels vanaf 2012 weer actief. 'In Spades' klinkt fris, herkenbaar maar toch ook nieuw (o.a. door het gebruik van elektronica zo nu en dan) lekkere plaat met de onmiskenbare en heerlijke stem van Greg Dulli! Jeb Loy Nichols – Country Hustle CD/LP Jeb Loy Nichols...voor mij een onbekende naam maar na even 'googelen' bleek dat dit al zijn 10de (!!) album is (oeps...)! Deze muzikant blijkt heel wat zijprojectjes (buiten zijn eigen albums) te hebben waarvan de bekendste eentje met Groove Armada blijkt te zijn, hij heeft namelijk de vocalen verzorgt in het nummer 'What's Your Version' (2007). Maar goed, terug naar dit album! 'Country Hustle' is denk ik wel de slechtste titel ooit voor een album als deze wat overigens ook geldt voor de albumhoes. Er is namelijk geen 2 seconden country te horen op deze plaat. Wel een heerlijke (bij vlagen) lome, soulvolle en hier en daar zelfs funky sfeer die bij zomerse temperaturen het zonder twijfel goed gaat doen op ieder z'n terras, balkon of tuin! Ik zelf moest er even aan wennen maar dat duurde niet al te lang. Singles als 'Breezeblocks', 'Tessellate' én 'Matilda' werden platgedraaid in het alternatieve circuit. Tweede album volgde in 2014 en werd ook meteen een groot succes met o.a. de singles 'Every Other Freckle' én 'Left Hand Free'. Nu, drie jaar later, is daar de nieuwe plaat, vooralsnog zijn er twee singles uit, 'In Cold Blood' én '3WW' (klik op de hoes) en op basis daarvan denk ik dat album nummer drie ook gewoon weer goud gaat halen! Dan Auerbach – Waiting On A Song CD/LP Release: 02-06-2017 De eerste single 'Shine On Me' is er eentje waar de zon spontaan van gaat schijnen inclusief meezing refreintje, anders dus dan we gewend zijn van Dan Auerbach (beter bekend als frontman van The Black Keys) maar toch is dat helemaal niet erg. Dit nummer is ontzettend catchy en binnen 'no time' krijg je het niet meer uit je hoofd. Tweede single 'King Of A One Horse Town' (klik op de hoes van het album) klinkt wel meer als de Dan Auerbach die we gewend zijn. Ik ben zeer benieuwd naar dit album, het lijkt erop dat dit best wel eens dé zomer-soundtrack van dit jaar zou kunnen worden! Roger Waters – Is This The Life We Really Want? CD/2LP Het laatste studio album van Roger Waters, 'Amused To Death' uit 1992, was een vooruitziende blik op de pop cultuur, met als thema de kracht die TV uitoefende in de tijd van de eerste Golfoorlog. De langverwachte opvolger is een nietsontziend commentaar op de moderne wereld en daarmee gepaard gaande onzekere tijden. Het album is geproduceerd en gemixt door Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Beck, U2). Het album bevat 12 gloednieuwe tracks. Muzikanten op de plaat zijn Roger Waters (vocals, acoustic, bass), Nigel Godrich (arrangement, sound collages, keyboards, guitar), Gus Seyffert (bass, guitar, keyboards), Jonathan Wilson (guitar, keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Roger Manning (keyboards), Lee Pardini (keyboards), Lucius, Jessica Wolfe en Holly Proctor (vocals). London Grammar – Truth Is A Beautiful Thing CD/Ltd2CD/LP/Ltd2LP Release: 09-06-2017 'If You Wait', het debuut uit 2013 is een album waar eigenlijk alleen maar singles op staan (zoals 'Strong', 'Hey Now' en 'Wasting My Young Years')en dat leverde vier keer platina en 1x goud op. Dat is nog eens een droomdebuut! Tegelijkertijd ligt er door het succes van de vorige, enorme druk op de tweede plaat. De eerste tracks die uitgebracht zijn klinken alsof ze zich daar niets van aan hebben getrokken want ze gaan exact op dezelfde voet verder en dat is goed nieuws! London Grammar volgt hun eigen weg en laat zich niet muzikaal beïnvloeden en dat is bewonderenswaardig! Cigarettes After Sex – Cigarettes After Sex Release: 09-06-2017 In de nieuwsbrief van februari kondigde ik al vol enthousiasme dat eindelijk de EP eraan kwam van de band Cigarettes After Sex! Waar het eerst 'eeuwen' duurde voordat er iets werd uitgebracht volgt nu eigenlijk redelijk snel het volledige album en dus het officiele full-lengt debuut! Cigarettes After Sex klinkt exact zoals je zou verwachten bij deze bandnaam. Zelf hoor ik grote gelijkenis met Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) bijvoorbeeld. Mooie lome en sexy sfeer. Aanrader voor laat op de avond bij een haardvuurtje met een goed glas rode wijn (of aanmaak-limonade kan natuurlijk ook). Fleet Foxes – Crack-Up CD/2LP Release: 16-06-2017 EINDELIJK het langverwachte derde album van Fleet Foxes is bijna uit! 'Crack-Up' komt bijna tien jaar na het gelijknamige debuutalbum 'Fleet Foxes' van de band en zes jaar na de release van het tweede album 'Helplessness Blues'. Fleet Foxes heeft de eerste albumtrack ' Third of May/Ōdaigahara ' bijna negen minuut-durende track combineert epische pianopartijen, elektrische twaalfsnarige gitaren, strijkkwartet en natuurlijk de bekende sprankelende harmonieën van de band.
