It's similar to the silly notion that the small horse isn't going to make a Saturday afternoon-type runner. I love hearing people say that nonsense and then turning around and watching the little horse win. More often than not, the little horse body puts it together faster. Their knees close earlier, they have less weight to pack around, etc. Look at Mine That Bird--little May foal. Throw out the Kentucky Derby, and he's still carrying a nice record--and a Sovereign Award. I also often hear that people don't want to breed to the smaller stallions because of their size. Yet have you taken a look at how well Northern Dancer did? And he didn't have to breed 200 mares a year to get a handful of SWs. Mr. Pros- pector as well. They were not large horses but they have pretty much controlled the quality end of the spectrum, even long after death. I'm not saying that everyone should jump ship when they are deciding on a stallion or making their short list at the sales. I'm saying think first. There is more depth to our business than just a Jan. 1 foal by a big stallion. So much more. History should tell us plenty, so don't ignore all sections of the sport and the business. One day it could very much serve you well to spend your money wisely--as opposed to spending it like everyone else does. You could be the lucky guy in the winner's circle holding a vase, cup or trophy of some sort.
