Commissioner Corner

Beginning in April, Tamie Swain becomes South Mountain’s District Commissioner. This is what she says about Commissioner Service:

It’s an exciting time in the Commissioner staff - we send a big thank you to Mike Mayrosh for his service as he steps down, and we are starting to build the staff to better handle the challenges of growing the district!

Commissioner service supports the units and helps them grow. We share information with the units, and provide a link between the unit and the district, so district leadership can better hear and see the needs of the units.

We need YOUR help - I know you already do one or more jobs, but I’d like to have experienced Scouters who are able to listen and guide units other than their own to success. If you can help just one other unit, you will have made a big impact on all the Scouts in the unit, and helped the District. Please consider this special opportunity to share what you know with others. Contact me, your unit commissioner, Bernie Suess or Arby Beisel for more information!

I am also happy to remind ALL commissioners and commissioners to be that there is training coming up fast - please plan to attend as a refresher, or new training!

*April 2 - Commissioner College in Montour - leave 6:30 am, spend the whole day earning your bachelor or masters of Commissioner Science - Fax the attached registration form to 570-387-4074

*April 9 - Area 5 Journey to Excellence - May the Force be with Us! Bucks County Community College The registration site is up and running at http://tinyurl.com/Harness-the-force

*May 21 - Unit Commissioner training - Trexler Nature Lodge - 9 am to 1 pm

Finally, the Commissioner Staff meets monthly at the Council building at 7 pm on the third Wednesday of the month - so the next meeting is coming up quickly on April 20 - I’d like all current commissioners to attend this planning and development meeting if at all possible - hope you can make it! More details coming with the meeting agenda next month.

Thank you for your service!

Additional Rules for the Minsi Trails Council Eagle Scout Scholarships

1. Each Eagle Scout may submit only one application during their Scouting Career. It is strongly suggested that Eagle Scouts submit their application during their final year of High School, or the year immediately following the awarding of their Eagle Rank. For example, a 16 year old Eagle Scout is advised to wait until the Spring of his Senior year in High School to submit his application.

2. Only achievements through the end of High School will be considered for the awards. College achievements should not be listed and will not influence how the application is judged.

3. Please inform your teacher reference (near the top of the 3rd page of the form) that you have listed them as a reference, and provide a valid email address – they may be contacted.

4. List your overall High School GPA (or GPA to date) and the maximum GPA obtainable at your school – please confirm this latter number with your guidance counselor.

5. A missing signature from the application will disqualify an Eagle Scout from consideration. If the Scoutmaster has changed since earning the Eagle rank, the current Scoutmaster may sign, and should be the person indicated on the first page of the application.

6. Failure to meet the April 14 deadline may disqualify an Eagle Scout from consideration.

7. Failure to include the essay will disqualify the Eagle Scout from consideration.

8. Incomplete applications will be considered at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee. APRIL 2016 South Mountain District Newsletter -30- High Adventure Spotlight

Last inute pportunities:

I just received an email from BSA: Waypoints – High Adventure Base News. Each of the four national bases has a link in the email for opportunities for crews or individuals for this year.

Sea Base has a link to Scout Connections. These are individuals looking to join a crew and crews with openings for individuals. httpbsaseabase.orgScoutonnections.aspx

Northern Tier has a similar link, listing different opportunities for individuals httpntier.orgAboutSummer20anoe20TripsIndividualPrograms.aspx

Philmont also has several different individual opportunities, including leadership and conservation adventures httpphilmontscoutranch.orgindividual.aspx

Both Philmont and Northern Tier offer NAYLE courses over the summer. If you aren’t familiar with NAYLE (National Advanced outh Leadership Experience), think of it as NLT (National outh Leadership Training) kicked up a couple notches. And that’s a very good recommendation right there.

And last, but not least, the Summit has its Appalachian Adventure. This is a chance to experience several of the high adventure activities available at the Summit during a shorter duration stay. Three night opportunities for a group only a day’s drive away.

So if you find that you have openings in your troop’s summer plans, or are looking for opportunities for older scouts beyond the typical summer camp, take a look at these options.
