Participants observed in first person perspective a virtual body having the right hand-forearm (i) connected by a normal wrist (Full-Limb) or a thin rigid wire connection (Wire) or (ii) disconnected because of a missing wrist (m-Wrist) or a missing wrist plus a plexiglass panel positioned between the hand and the forearm (Plexiglass). While the analysis of subjective ratings revealed that only the observation of natural full connected virtual limb elicited high levels of ownership, high amplitudes of SCRs were found also during observation of the non-natural, rigid wire connection condition. This result suggests that the conscious embodiment of an artificial limb requires a natural looking visual body appearance while implicit reactivity to threat may require physical body continuity, even non-naturally looking, that allows the implementation of protective reactions to threat. Protective physiological reactions to events threatening our body depend not only on the recognition of the threat itself but also on the correct representation of our body and its attribution to ourselves.

The goal of this study was to demonstrate, using the largest cohort reported so far, that mothers of an ASD child have an elevated frequency of anti-brain antibodies and to assess whether brain reactivity is associated with an autoimmune diathesis of the mother. We screened plasma of 2431 mothers of an ASD child from Simon Simplex Collection and plasma of 653 unselected women of child-bearing age for anti-brain antibodies using immunohistology on mouse brain. Positive and negative plasma from mothers with an ASD child were analyzed for anti-nuclear antibodies and for autoimmune disorders. Mothers of an ASD child were four times more likely to harbor anti-brain antibodies than unselected women of child-bearing age (10.5 vs 2.6%). A second cohort from The Autism Genetic Resource Exchange with multiplex families displayed an 8.8% prevalence of anti-brain antibodies in the mothers of these families. Fifty-three percent of these mothers with anti-brain antibodies also exhibited anti-nuclear autoantibodies compared with 13.4% of mothers of an ASD child without anti-brain antibodies and 15% of control women of child-bearing age. The analysis of ASD mothers with brain-reactive antibodies also revealed an increased prevalence of autoimmune diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

    i Message from the Director The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) is pleased to present the “Survival Scores Research Project” as part of our continuing effort to develop and provide new information and strategies to enhance law enforcement training. Additionally, the FLETC is committed to sharing this information with the law enforcement community. The dramatic impact of stress on performance is well recognized in the law enforcement profession, but has not been well documented from a research perspective. This latest research will enhance the growing pool of knowledge in this area, and aid in identifying training mechanisms to optimize the effectiveness of law enforcement officers’ responses in stressful encounters. This research-based project offers a new perspective on the future of law enforcement training. This novel approach combines the numerous disciplines that are integrated in the law enforcement profession and applies them in a highly stressful environment. The first hand documentation of the stress response provided new and insightful information that can be directly applied to our training programs. I would like to thank our distinguished research colleagues from the University of South Florida and Walter Reed Army Institute of Research for their valuable insight and assistance in performing this research. To determine age-specific differences in adaptation of indigenous residents, nonspecific adaptive body reactions (NARs) have been studied among the Evenki men aged 13 to 86, permanently living in the Arctic. The results indicated the presence of age-specific differences in NARs. The decline of nonspecific body resistance in every fourth teenager is correlated with adaptive reactions developing in parallel with underlying low-level body reactivity. Adaptive reactions in men aged 75-90 were characterized by a medium to a high reactivity level, which enabled preservation of body reserves even under extreme climate conditions. Two age groups (22- 35 and 61-74) included the highest percentages of people with adverse NARs. Therefore, men in these age groups should be considered as a major risk group for developing both psychosomatic and somatic diseases. 1 Introduction (1968).
