The Services will run hourly from 9.30pm until 1.30am on the ‘metro’ routes 5B, 7 & 25. The services will be numbered 5B, 7 and 25 respectively, but the 25 will run between Portslade Station and North Street, turning into the 42 between North Street & the Universities. It is clear that sustainable transport is one of the greatest challenges in the pursuit of sustainable development, as it is one of the largest contributors to our individual carbon footprints influencing the global climate. In this regard, we have witnessed the transport sector taking numerous measures to lessen the burden on the environment, reclaiming urban space from the automobile and prohibiting cars from major parts of downtown areas and confining them in other ways. These examples are nowadays considered as leading cities of sustainable urban development because of the work they have done to improve public transport, encouraging non-motorized modes, creating pedestrian zones, limiting the use of private cars, and trying to undo the transformation of cities caused by automobile dominance. Country Context: United Kingdom Motor vehicles generate more air pollution than any other single human activity, yet people will not give up their cars unless the quality of public transport is improved. Statistical data suggest that in 2012, the United Kingdom (UK) total energy consumption from transport was 53 million tons of oil equivalent, or about 36% of the UK total. The total carbon of the sector by 2013 was 117 million tons of CO2, or about a quarter of the UK total. With this in mind, the UK Government has latterly recognised the need to take action to control the rate of traffic growth, improve the environmental performance of vehicles and increase public awareness about the environmental impacts of pollutant emissions from transport.

Most changes mean higher fares but some short distance fares were reduced and a few were unchanged. Stagecoach fares went up first, on 5 January followed by Brighton & Hove and other operators on 14 January. On Stagecoach buses the standard single fare within the Brighton & Hove fare zone is now £2.55. A return costs £4.40, and a day ticket Just 10p more, but travel a few stops beyond Shoreham High Street and the fares from Brighton almost double to £4.90 single or £8.20 return. The best value fare is undoubtedly the £2.50 evening ticket valid after 1900, which is unchanged. Spare a thought for bus users in Worthing who pay £6.20 for a Worthing area day ticket, almost £2 more than Stagecoach charges in Brighton & Hove and £1 more than on Brighton & Hove Buses in the City Saver area. Brighton & Hove Bus Company fares are also adopted by Metrobus and by Compass and The Big Lemon within the city whose services run under contract to Brighton & Hove City Council. The best news is that some short hop fares have been reduced from £2 or £2.20 to £1.90. However, the distance covered by the £1.90 fare varies considerably.     Brighton Area Buswatch Representing local bus users Part of Bus Users UK Buswatch News – August 2016 Bus service changes from September The main improvement from Brighton & Hove Buses is an increase in the frequency of route 49 from every 10 minutes to every 8-9 minutes. While this doesn’t seem much there will also be measures to improve the reliability of this service. Routes 5/5A/5B will also have new timetables. Frequencies will be the same but an extra five minutes is being added to the overall journey time to reflect current traffic conditions, which should improve timekeeping and reduce bunching. On the down side, the hourly 14/14C is being withdrawn between Brighton Station and Hangleton. The service will continue to run as now between Brighton and Peacehaven or Newhaven. The Hangleton service on the 14 will be replaced by the 55 at peak times which will have extra journeys and will be diverted to run via Hove Park, Woodruff Avenue and Dyke Road instead of Old Shoreham Road. Between the peaks there will be no replacement service and there will be no service on Saturdays (the Sunday service to Hangleton was withdrawn a few years ago). Brighton & Hove Buses says very few people were using the Hangleton service at these times and they can no longer justify running it. They add that most passengers have an alternative service nearby – although some will lose direct links to Brighton Station and the Royal Sussex County Hospital. New seafront routes i7 and 7X which have been lightly used will be withdrawn for the winter period.
