2016 Have Been Chosen
It’s Official - Votes are in, these People Make our City a Happier Place Welcome to the second Brighton and Hove Happy List, part of a national network of lists that recognise people who bring smiles and cheer to their community every day. Happy Lists were born out of a need to provide an antidote to those rich lists and celebrity lists which worship at the shrine of the wealthy the bonus-getters and the tax avoiders. This list honours a different set of values and recognises those who work to make their communities better adjusted places, leading to their cities and thus countries becoming better and happier places too. Nominations have been made and the men and women who are Brighton & Hove’s Happiness champions for 2016 have been chosen. Read on to meet them… This list has been created in association with Action for Happiness, Happy City Initiative, The Argus, Sunday Assembly Brighton and Bailey & French. Champions are listed in no particular order. Jeannie Hignell, Fitness Trainer With two nominations - Jeannie is a fitness trainer - but no ordinary fitness trainer! She is inspired by people for whom health and wellbeing is often a huge challenge. She considers the needs of the whole person, supporting and encouraging them towards physical and mental wellbeing. She goes out of her way to help people feel the best they can, no matter what life demands of them. By creating a hugely positive community around her work, her clients support each other, celebrating one another’s achievements and contributing to a wider network of happy, positive people. -

The Big Lemon
Social enterprise: Turning Ideas Into Action Middlesex University Week 2: Making the Community a part of your team Community Led-Sustainable Transport: the case of the Big Lemon Background In the last few decades, urban areas across the world have become increasingly automobile-dominated and less sustainable. It is clear that sustainable transport is one of the greatest challenges in the pursuit of sustainable development, as it is one of the largest contributors to our individual carbon footprints influencing the global climate. In this regard, we have witnessed the transport sector taking numerous measures to lessen the burden on the environment, reclaiming urban space from the automobile and prohibiting cars from major parts of downtown areas and confining them in other ways. These examples are nowadays considered as leading cities of sustainable urban development because of the work they have done to improve public transport, encouraging non-motorized modes, creating pedestrian zones, limiting the use of private cars, and trying to undo the transformation of cities caused by automobile dominance. Country Context: United Kingdom Motor vehicles generate more air pollution than any other single human activity, yet people will not give up their cars unless the quality of public transport is improved. Statistical data suggest that in 2012, the United Kingdom (UK) total energy consumption from transport was 53 million tons of oil equivalent, or about 36% of the UK total. The total carbon of the sector by 2013 was 117 million tons of CO2, or about a quarter of the UK total. With this in mind, the UK Government has latterly recognised the need to take action to control the rate of traffic growth, improve the environmental performance of vehicles and increase public awareness about the environmental impacts of pollutant emissions from transport. -
