The concept of the design is to allow an observer to observe (-opticon) all (pan-) inmates of an institution without them being able to tell whether or not they are being watched.' Obviously i'm not mad keen on the idea of prison as a whole but this particular type just seems cruel and unusual. From an architectural and conceptual view it's pretty interesting. But from a human point of view it's brutally efficient, paranoia-inducing and horribly Orwellian. Thankfully it seems the idea hasn't really caught on and with the advent of CCTV it's easier to keep tabs on inmates in less creepy ways. Wikipedia has a list of prisons which are said to be 'influenced' by Bentham's original concept but the closest to it in actuality is the Presidio Modelo in Cuba which is now abandoned. On the 18th April 2019 at Joshua Brooks in Manchester, 182 DJ’s banded together to smash to Guinness World Record for the largest ever Back to Back DJ set. Raising money for the Mustard Tree and Share Tanzania charities, International and UK DJ’s spent 11.5 hours spinning back to back, tune after tune, laying down a breathtaking new world record. Steve Davis (the champion snooker player turned techno DJ) played the 147th record, equalling the last record. 35 more DJ’s then took to the decks to push the record as far as it could go. Featuring the likes of Jacky, Mason Maynard and Ben Pearce, along with the Concept Audio Collective DJ’s, everyone joined forces in the name of good causes.
