Die beste Art, die kultivierte Stadt und ihre Bewohner mit ihrem typischen »Singsang« kennenzulernen, ist, sich Zeit zu nehmen, herumzuschlendern und die Straßen und Plätze Schritt für Schritt zu erkunden. Die geografische Lage von Cork erfasst man leicht. Der Stadtkern liegt auf einer lang gestreckten Insel im Fluss Lee. Zahlreiche Brücken verbinden ihn mit den Vororten. GESCHICHTE Die Niederung im Tal des Lee eignete sich immer gut zum Siedeln. Im Jahr 650 gründete St. Fin Barre in Corcaigh, der »Marsch«, ein Kloster. Die Wikinger ließen sich hier ebenfalls nieder und gründeten im 9. und 10. Jahrhundert eine Ortschaft. Ihre günstige Lage am Fluss und der große natürliche Hafen förderten den Handel unter den Normannen. Dem kauf- männischen Selbstverständnis entsprang ein unabhängiger Geist. 1649 war die Stadt klug genug, Oliver Cromwell und sein Heer her einzulassen. Als weniger klug erwies es sich, 1690 den abgesetzten König Jakob II. in seinem erfolglosen Aufbegehren gegen Wilhelm III. zu unterstützen. Wil- helms protestantisches Heer drang ein und zerstörte die Stadtmauern und viele Häuser.

    Motiv: Dáil Bar © Ireland‘s Content Pool Irlands langer Weg vom Kolonialismus zur Unabhängigkeit Eine ganz ungewöhnliche Studienreise Donnerstag, 14.05.2020 - Donnerstag, 21.05.2020 veranstaltet vom Europäischen Bildungs- und Begegnungszentrum Irland in Zusammenarbeit mit der VHS Hagen und Arbeit und Leben DGB/VHS Regionalbüro Berg-Mark Diese Reise wird nicht nur erstmalige Irlandreisende erfreuen, sondern auch unsere „Wiederholungstäter*innen“ verblüffen. Denn diesmal wollen wir uns in eher selten be- suchte Regionen Irlands begeben und dabei immer wieder einen Blick auf die Abhängigkeit von England in der irischen Geschichte werfen: Zum einen in den Südosten der „Grünen Insel“, und zwar v.a. in die überraschend abwechslungsreichen Grafschaften Wexford und Waterford, die eng mit der Besetzung durch die Anglonormannen in der irischen Geschichte verbunden sind; und dann auch in den wunderbaren äußersten Südwesten Irlands, nämlich nach West Cork, in dem wir den Versuchen der Iren nachgehen, sich von der englischen Unterdrückung zu befreien. Die landschaftliche Vielfalt und die vielen langen Küstenstreifen der südirischen Atlantikküste, aber auch so manches kunsthistorische Kleinod und mancher Garten, die auch den englischen Herrschaftsanspruch dokumentieren, werden sie begeis- tern! Und selbstverständlich werden wir auch Gelegenheit zum Pub-Besuch und dem Erle- ben irischer traditioneller Musik haben! The group included no less than six new joiners, five of whom had survived ‘Try a Hike’! Starting at sea level, the group progressed merrily up on to the main road. We continued north east along the road for about 500m before crossing over and accessing a farm track which eventually led us through a stile and onto the walk proper. We began the steep and heathery ascent of Gearhane. Conditions were close to perfect with good visibility in the sunshine and for the first time in my memory of this mountain, practically no wind! We stopped at the ‘teapot’ (a rock in the shape of a teapot which was apparently empty!) and later on just past Gearhane, had lunch on some outcrops with a beautiful western vista. A whispered rumor of a trip down to Caherconree Fort was swept away on the cooling breeze before we reached the summit of Caherconree. Next we went up Baurtregaum, at 851m the highest peak of the Slieve Mish Mountains that rewarded the group with magnificent views out over Tralee Bay and south over Castlemaine Harbour.
