All the rest, which includes Ferrari, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar and others, had their own array of short and long term problems. Other manufacturer’s forays into air suspension have been just as successful. Much has been written about Hydrolastic and Hydragas. A lot of which is more fantasy than fact. VEHICLE OF THE MONTH THE “MINI” The Mini came about because of a fuel shortage caused by the 1956 Suez Crisis. Petrol was once again rationed in the UK, sales of large cars slumped, and the market for German bubble cars boomed, even in countries such as Britain, where imported cars were still a rarity. The Fiat 500, launched in 1957, was also hugely successful, especially in its native Italy. Leonard Lord, the somewhat autocratic head of BMC, reportedly detested these cars so much that he vowed to rid the streets of them and design a 'proper miniature car'. He laid down some basic design requirements – the car should be contained within a box that measured 10×4×4 feet (3.0×1.2×1.2 m); and the passenger accommodation should occupy 6 feet (1.8 m) of the 10-foot (3.0 m) length; and the engine, for reasons of cost, should be an existing unit.

    How to Remove and Install Hydragas Spheres by Mark Jones, [email protected] The following describes the procedure to remove the original hydragas spheres and install regassed hydragas spheres, along with information on repressurising the suspension, hydrolastic fluid recipe and how to make a hydrolastic pump using a grease gun. Depressurising the hydragas system • Start by placing the car on axle stands and remove all four wheels. • Relieve the fluid pressure from both sides of the hydragas system. There are two Schrader valves located on the hydragas pipes behind the under bonnet black plastic cover. • Caution: wear eye protection due to the fluid in the system being at a pressure at or above 400 psig (27.6 bar). o If using a Churchill hydrolastic pump, follow the instructions on the unit to remove the fluid from the spheres. o If you do not have a Churchill hydrolastic pump, other people have used the following method with success: . Connect a Schrader low loss connector valve to the Schrader valves and place a plastic jug on the end of the valve. Slowly open the valve and allow the high pressure liquid to discharge into the plastic jug. Be careful to keep skin away from the low loss connector valve because the fluid in the system is at very high pressure and could damage your skin. o It is not necessary to evacuate the hydrolastic fluid from the spheres; the liquid can be easily drained from the spheres once they have been removed from the car.
