5 Football Club news

It’s been a busy pre-season for us with two big events to report. Dave McLoughlin Memorial Tournament This was held over the bank holiday weekend, in memory of one of the club’s great servants over the years, both as player and official. We welcomed New St Swifts and Andover Dynamos for a 3-way competition, unfortunately Broughton couldn’t raise a team on the day. In the first game Dynamos beat Somborne on penalties, after the hosts had got their act together to come from 2 down to get a draw. Somborne then went up against rivals from last year who we beat to the league title, but New St got the better of this one, winning 1-0. In the final game Dynamos, who finished bottom of the league last year, put up a great fight but New St grabbed a late winner. Many thanks to all spectators who came along and made it a very sociable afternoon.

Gloria McLoughlin presents the cup to the New St Swifts captain, with Chairman John Harfield. 6 Andover League 6-a-side Tournament This is the now traditional curtain raiser to the season, all the clubs in the league have to send a team for a 16-team tournament played at Enham. Last year, Somborne won the plate shield, but this year went one better by winning the main tournament! It was a great effort by the team and manager, Phil Paddock, who rotated his squad just right. The team went unbeaten all day, coming through three group games and then quarters, semi and the final where they beat Globe Sports 1-0.

25 Permissive footpath improved At the beginning of September, the permissive footpath that links the top of New Lane to the footpath to North Park was completed with the installation of a set of steps. The steps will make it easier and safer to climb up the bank to reach the permissive footpath from New Lane and, more significantly, much safer to come down on to New Lane – especially when the ground is wet and slippery. The steps were installed by staff from Hampshire County Council’s Countryside Access team with help from Chris Hall (pictured) and David Haydon. Thanks to John Chalcraft for allowing the permissive footpath on his land. Village Hall news After the summer break we are glad to footballers. 39 The vicar has the last word Dear Friends, The Harvest Festivals are here again. The first one in the benefice was at All Saints, Little Somborne. It was held on a wet and cold afternoon in mid- September and was not easy to read the words of the hymns by candlelight! However, Emily, Frederick and Pam gave us an excellent musical lead on the ancient harmonium and the harvest produce of apples, grapes, grains and flowers provided a rainbow of beautiful colours. I’m looking forward to the other harvests during the next few weeks. I very much hope you will be able to get to at least one of these festival services. Harvest time is a special opportunity to give thanks for the good gifts and resources we have. People as well as produce are important. On 12th October, the day of the King’s Somborne Harvest Supper, Howard Rowe will be licensed as a lay reader. He lives in the village and will be able to lead worship across the benefice. We will be celebrating his new ministry in the Christians Together Harvest Festival on Sunday 13 October. I am grateful for the appointment of Maggie Hobbs as the new administrative assistant. She has been working with me from the office in Stockbridge since July. Read the article on page 33 to find out more. In early September, the Winchester Diocesan Synod held an important conference. They came together to worship, pray and agree the strategic priorities for the diocese for the coming years. They agreed that living the mission of Jesus will mean that:  We grow authentic disciples  We re-imagine the Church  We are agents of social transformation We belong together in Christ, practising sacrificial living and good stewardship of all that God has entrusted to us. Visit www.winchester.anglican.org to learn more.

May you know some of God’s blessings as the autumn begins.
