ABSTRACT The Lower Gangetic Plains particularly from Dakhineshwar to Uluberia, West Bengal was investigated for the taxonomic and ecological analyses of its naturalized vegetation. The physicochemical studies of soil were also performed from this site. It was observed mangrove plants prevailed at zones where higher percentage of silt was present, while inland plants were grown where percentage of sand and clay were higher. A total of 95 plant species were recorded and their phytoclimatic study was done and the result revealed that percentage of phanerophytes was maximum among others. From phytosociological study it was observed that mangrove associates such as Cryptocoryne ciliata and Oryza coarctata showed highest IVI values, on the other hand Cynodon dactylon was dominated at non-mangrove site. The present analyses indicated existence of two distinct plant communities in the site with more or less stable vegetation pattern. Nomenclature, flowering/ fruinting period, habit, habitat, distribution and uses are given. Keys to the genera/species and varieties are also given. Keywords: Polygonaceae, India INTRODUCTION Polygonaceae-a cosmopolitan family of dicotyledonous angiosperms is also known as the knotweed family or smartweed-buckwheat family. The name of the family is based on the „Type genus‟ Polygonum, and was first used by Antoine Laurent de Jussieu in 1789 in his book, Genera Plantarum. The name is derived from Greekwords viz., ‟poly’ (means many) and „goni‟ (means knee or joint) refering to the many swollen nodes on the stem/ branches. Many species are economically important (medicinal/edible/ornamental etc). Fruits of Coccoloba uviferawhich is commonly known as sea grape, are eaten and a jelly made from it is sold commercially in Florida (USA). Seeds of 2 species of Fagopyrum commonly known as „buckwheat‟yiled flour.Leaves of Rumex acetosa (common sorrel) are eaten in salads or as a potherb. Many species of Emex, Polygonum (s.l.) and Rumex are the weeds. Present studies were under taken under Flora of India Project‟of Botanical Survey of India.Brief taxonomic account consisting of nomenclature, common/vernacular names, flowering/fruiting period, habit, habitat, distribution and uses (wherever known) of the recorded taxa are given in this paper. -

Abstract The current study was an attempt to encompass the conservation status of plants of Mohmand Agency, (FATA) Pakistan. IUCN Criteria was followed for the assessment of the conservation status of the plants in the area. Total 170 plants, belonging to 48 families were reported from the area out of which 13 (7.6%) plants were found to be endangered. These plants include Albizia lebbek Tamarix indica, Tecomella undulata, Acacia modesta, Acacia nilotica, Pinus roxburgii, Ziziphus mauritiana, Caralluma tuberculata, Cotoneaster nummularia, Dodonaea viscosa, Nannorhops ritchiana, Olea ferruginea and Salvadora persica. Biotic stress is extremely high due to anthropogenic disturbances and overgrazing, making 32 (18%) plants vulnerable, 87 (51%) rare and 38 (22%) plants infrequent. Fabaceae family was the most affected one, with 3 species being endangered, followed by Apocynaceae, Arecaceae, Bignoniaceae, Oleaceae, Pinaceae, Rhamnaceae, Rosaceae, Salvadoraceae, Sapindaceae and Tamaricaceae with 1 species each. In vulnerable status, Poaceae was the highest threatened family with 7 species, followed by Brassicaceae with 4, fabaceae with 3 and Apocynaceae and Rhamnaceae with 1 species each. There were 13 rare plants each in family Asteraceae and Poaceae. -

2. LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1. Taxonomic treatments Family Polygonaceae was established and published by A. L. Jussieu (1789) in Genera Plantarum. Around 1200 species representing 48 genera are geographically distributed from the tropics to the arctic, although most species are concentrated in the northern temperate region (Heywood 1978; Freeman and Reveal 2005; Sanchez and Kron 2008). Polygonaceae Jussieu commonly known as the Buckwheat, Smartweed or Knotweed family is one of the complex group among the class Magnoliopsida regarding its identification. The family name was derived from Greek word “Polygonon”, “Polys” meaning many and “gonon” meaning Knee referring to the prominent nodes of many species (Komarov 1970). General characteristics Polygonaceae is a very complex family due it’s most diverse and peculiar morphological features. Members of the Polygonaceae are showing variable habit range from annual or perennial herbs, shrubs to lianas and some trees. The most distinctive feature of the family is the presence of membranous or hyaline sheath uniting the stipules (except Antigonon Endl., Eriogonum Michx. etc). Poyang Lake, located in the middle reaches of Yangtze River (central China), constitutes the largest freshwater lake of the country. It harbours high biodiversity and provides important habitat for local wildlife. A dam that will maintain the water capacity in Poyang Lake is currently being planned. However, the local biodiversity and the likely effects of this dam on the biodiversity (especially on the endemic and rare plants) have not been thoroughly examined. -
Diversity of Members of Polygonaceae from West Bengal, India

Abstract Polygonaceae is an economically important angiospermic plant family and mostly distributed in moist areas of plains and hilly areas. Present study recorded the occurrence of 36 taxa representing 9 genera of Polygonaceae growing in wild, home gardens, roadsides and cultivated areas from different parts of West Bengal. Among the recorded taxa, 22 species have medicinal values, 10 species are edible, and 4 ornamental. Key words : Polygonaceae; diversity; distribution; uses; West Bengal; India. Polygonum plebeium contained highest content of phenols (31.56 mg/g dw), whereas highest content of flavonoids was found in Cannabis sativa (9.27 mg/g dw). Polygonum barbatum was found to contain highest contents of xanthophylls (52.20 mg/g dw) and total lipid antioxidants (16.89 µmole/g fw). Cluster analysis (CA) showed that Erigeron bonariensis and Parthenium hysterophorus belongs to family Asteraceae and had close proximity to each other. First three components of principal component analysis (PCA) explained 98.57% of the total variance. Factor analysis (FA) explained two factors: factor-1 had maximum loadings on (xanthophylls and flavonoids) and explained for 36.4% of the total variance. Factor-2 had maximum loadings on (phenols and total lipid antioxidants) and accounted for 34.3% of the total variance.
