In the Name of Krishna: The Cultural Landscape of a North Indian Pilgrimage Town A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Sugata Ray IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Frederick M. Asher, Advisor April 2012 © Sugata Ray 2012 Acknowledgements They say writing a dissertation is a lonely and arduous task. But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

  • Bapubomma” and Her Idealisation
© 2018 JETIR June 2018, Volume 5, Issue 6 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) TIED IN TRADITION: THE “BAPUBOMMA” AND HER IDEALISATION D. Sreeja Abstract-The “BapuBomma” (Bapu’s dolls/ Bapu’s drawings) is a familiar term in Telugu language, and it refers to the ideal Telugu woman, as picturised by SattirajuLakshminarayana (1933-2014), commonly known as ‘Bapu’, through his artwork. Bapu was a painter, cartoonist, and filmmaker and in all three mediums he has constructed the image of the Telugu maiden as sensuous and domestic. There has been research done in the field of the Telugu literary tradition, but contemporary art remains unexplored, and there is no study of Bapu’s work in these three mediums, especially his portrayals of women. This paper will be looking exclusively at the artworkconsidered the traditional “BapuBommas”. Through a semiotic analysis, the paper will study the symbols embedded within the paintingsand place them in the context of Telugu society to study their nature and implications. Being part of the mainstream, his work has managed to do much more than express the prevailing artistic tradition of his times- it creates and reflects society directly. The paper will also look at how this image has percolated into another form of art- film, in order to substantiate this argument. In a postcolonial and increasingly westernised context, there is a strong urge to retain a certain identity that is rooted in what is understood as rural and traditional, and this urge is depicted extensively in Bapu’s work. Keywords-Bapu, Telugu, art, cultural identity, femininity, performativity, popular culture, commercial art In popular culture, there are no mere works of art; there are phenomena, spectacles, trends, and entire narratives that depend on much more than just the artist.

  • Megastar: Chiranjeevi and Telugu Cinema After NT Ramo
1 Whistling Fans and Conditional Loyalty hat can cinema tell us about the politics of our time? There can of Wcourse be little doubt that studies of the cinema, from Siegfried Kracauer's magnum opus on German cinema (2004) to M.S.S. Pandian's (1992) study of MGR, have attempted to answer precisely this question. The obscene intimacy between film and politics in southern India provides an opportunity for students of cinema to ask the question in a manner that those in the business of studying politics would have to take seriously. This chapter argues that this intimacy has much to do with the fan-star relationship. Chiranjeevi's career foregrounds the manner in which this relationship becomes one of the important distinguishing features of Telugu cinema, as also a key constituent of the blockage that it encounters. Earlier accounts of random by social scientists (Hardgrave Jr. 1979, Hardgrave Jr. and Niedhart 1975, and Dickey 1993: 148-72) do not ponder long enough upon this basic question of how it is a response to the cinema. As a consequence, their work gives the impression that the fan is a product of everything (that is, religion, caste, language, political movements) but the cinema. I will argue instead that the engagement with cinema's materiality—or what is specific to die cinema: filmic texts, stars and everything else that constitutes thjs industrial-aesthetic form—is crucial for comprehending random. STUDYING FANS Fans' associations (FAs) are limited to south Indian states.1 Historically speaking, however, some of the earliest academic studies of Indian 4 Megastar Whistling Fans and Conditional Loyalty 5 popular cinema were provoked, at least in part, by the south Indian occasion to discuss (mis) readings of audiences at some length in the star-politician and his fans (for example, Hardgrave Jr.

  • How Power Star Pawan Kalyan Lost Before He Began Playing, Caravan
How Power Star Pawan Kalyan Lost Before He Began Playing http://caravanmagazine.in/vantage/power-star-pawan-kalyan In March 2014, Pawan Kalyan, one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars and the youngest brother of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi, took the plunge into politics by establishing the Jana Sena Party (JSP). He made a grand entry with a thrilling speech on 14 March at the party’s inauguration in a convention centre in Hyderabad. But he arrives at a time when Andhra Pradesh—which votes as one state but will have two assemblies with the formation of Telangana on 2 June—more than most other parts of India, is witnessing a stampede of celebrities in politics. With the exception of Venkatesh, all the major male stars of the industry, who have hundreds of thousands of fans’ associations among them, are either campaigning themselves, endorsing individual candidates or expected to campaign. Kalyan’s brother Chiranjeevi leads the Congress campaign. Nandamuri Balakrishna, who had limited his role to campaigning in the past, is now contesting for the assembly on a Telugu Desam Party ticket. Mahesh Babu is endorsing a TDP contestant. Akkineni Nagarjuna met Narendra Modi and fuelled speculations that he is all set to campaign for BJP. On the face of it, this degree of enthusiasm by stars and political parties for each other is counterintuitive. Indeed, with the exception of NT Rama Rao, whose party swept the Congress (I) out of power in January 1983, no other film star has had a lasting political career of any significance in Andhra Pradesh.
