2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020. -

PDF-125-1a Page 2 Thomas Tilling: A Brief Biography 1846-1969 Thomas Tilling, whose family had moved from Gloucestershire to Middlesex in the early part of the nineteenth century, was born in Hendon in 1825. In 1846, at the age of 21, he moved to London with just £30 and set himself up as a jobmaster in Walworth, hiring out horses, carriages and drivers. In December 1849 he commenced negotiations with Mr. W. Stevens for the purchase of a horse bus, which was concluded in January 1850. With the bus came the running rights to operate four journeys a day between Peckham and the 'Green Man and Still' in Oxford Street. Tilling reportedly drove the bus himself. 2020 Book News Welcome to our 2020 Book News. It’s hard to believe another year has gone by already and what a challenging year it’s been on many fronts. We finally got the Hallmark book launched at Showbus. The Red & White volume is now out on final proof and we hope to have copies available in time for Santa to drop under your tree this Christmas. Sorry this has taken so long but there have been many hurdles to overcome and it’s been a much bigger project than we had anticipated. Several other long term projects that have been stuck behind Red & White are now close to release and you’ll see details of these on the next couple of pages. Whilst mentioning bigger projects and hurdles to overcome, thank you to everyone who has supported my latest charity fund raiser in aid of the Christie Hospital. The Walk for Life challenge saw me trekking across Greater Manchester to 11 cricket grounds, covering over 160 miles in all weathers, and has so far raised almost £6,000 for the Christie. T WEST HISTORIC OMNIBUS & TRU FINAL RUNNING DAY FOR THE BRISTOL VR DOUBLE DECK BUS PENZANCE 9 DECEMBER Saturday 9th December will see the end of closed top operation by First Devon & Cornwall of their once ubiquitous standard Bristol VR double deck bus which first entered service with the then Western National Omnibus Company in 1969. To mark this auspicious occasion it is planned that the final three operational examples will run services from Penzance on Routes 1/1A to Land’s End, 2/2B to Helston and 17/17A to St. Ives. The VRs are expected to run all day, starting with the 0920 to Land’s End and ending with the 23.57 from Helston to Penzance. Special commemorative tickets will be issued on the vehicles. Enthusiasts will travel to Cornwall from all over the UK to ride on, photograph and talk about the VRs on this final day. So why all this interest; isn’t it just another old bus which should be consigned to the scrap heap and shouldn’t we be there instead to welcome the modern low floor, wheel chair accessible, air conditioned buses which will replace them? At the time the first VRs were introduced, Western National had just become part of the nationalised National Bus Company covering the territory of the former Western & Southern National and Devon General undertakings across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. Western National went on to purchase the largest fleet of Bristol VRs in the country with 244 bought new and a further 156 second hand examples acquired second hand over the years by Western National and the other companies spawned from it as a result of privatization in the 1980s – a grand total of 400 covering a time span of almost 38 years. -

PDF-098A-1 Page 2 Devon General Omnibus & Touring Co Ltd 1919-1970 [Part 1: 1919-1935] Torquay Tramways Co Ltd 1907-1934 Authorised by the Torquay Tramways Act of 1904, this 3ft 6ins gauge tramway was constructed by the Torquay Tramway Construction Co. Ltd (a subsidiary of the National Electric Construction Co. Ltd.) and operated by the Torquay Tramways Co. Ltd. The first section of track opened on the 4th April 1907, and consisted of three mainly single-track routes connecting Torre Station, St. Marychurch and Beacon Quay in a triangular system almost 4 miles in length and using the Dolter Surface Contact system.
