There have, not unexpectedly, been considerable archival losses too, as some later vacancy inventories at York make clear: the Durham sede vacante register of Alexander Neville (1381) and accompanying visitation records; the York sede vacante register after Neville’s own translation in 1388; the register of Thomas Arundel (only the register of his vicars-general survives today), and the register of Robert Waldby (likewise only his vicar-general’s register is now extant) have all long disappeared.1 Some of these would also have included records of ordinations, now missing from the chronological sequence.

Exam No. B044251 Overcoming the Binary: A Case Study of Lollardy in the Diocese of Salisbury, 1485-1500 Dissertation Supervisor: Cordelia Beattie 1 Exam No. B044251 Many thanks to Dr Cordelia Beattie for all the help, inspiration and time she has given me over the course of this year. 2 Exam No. B044251 Contents Introduction 4-8 Chapter I 9-20 Chapter II 21-31 Chapter III 32-40 Conclusion 41-43 Bibliography 44-46 3 Exam No. B044251 Introduction ‘Wavering in my mynde and greatly doubting’1 On 23nd March 1499, John Stanwey, a weaver from the parish of Saint Giles in Reading, stood before John Blyth, Bishop of Salisbury, at the Bishop’s Palace of Sonning Manor. With him was Thomas Scochyn, a tailor from the same parish, but a man who was probably John’s social superior, as a burgess of the guild merchant in Reading.2 Perhaps, therefore, when called upon to abjure, Thomas went first. He seems to be the more committed religious dissenter, confessing a full range of unorthodox beliefs; calling the Pope the antichrist, questioning the value of pilgrimages and criticizing offerings made to images instead of the poor. He also said he had believed that the sacrament of the altar was ‘veray bredd and nought ellys’.3 John’s abjuration reads differently. The formulaic structures and language of the abjurations recorded in the bishops’ registers prevents us from getting a precise understanding of John’s attitudes and feelings, but the tone of his confession seems very different from Thomas’s. Far from a clear statement of heterodox dissent, John says: Also I the said John Stanwey have been wavering in my myde [mind] and greatly doubting upon the sacrament of the aultere whether it were the veray body of ou saviour Cryste or noo.

  • U DDGE Papers of the Bishop Burton Estates 1194 - 1931 of the Gee and Hall-Watt Families
Hull History Centre: Bishop Burton Estates of the Gee and Hall-Watt Families U DDGE Papers of the Bishop Burton Estates 1194 - 1931 of the Gee and Hall-Watt Families Historical Background: Bishop Burton is about 4 kilometres west of Beverley on the main York road at the foot of the East Yorkshire wolds. It is an estate village dating largely from the lordship of the Hall-Watt family from the late eighteenth century. Before the Reformation the manor had been owned by the Archbishop of York. After reversion to the Crown in 1542 it was sold a decade later to John Dudley, Duke of Northunberland who forfeited it a year later on attainder. It then went through leasing and sale before being bought by the Crompton family, who in turn sold it to William Gee (d.1612) in 1603. It subsequently descended in the Gee family until being bought by Richard Watt in 1783 (Allison, History of Yorkshire East Riding, iv, pp.3-4). The Gee family came from Rothley in Leicestershire. Henry Gee of Rothley was the common ancestor of a senior branch of the family who remained in Rothley and the father of William Gee who first moved to Hull as a master mariner. William Gee became a Merchant of the Staple and acquired great wealth through this means and through public office. He was sheriff of Hull in 1560 and mayor in 1562, 1573 and 1582. He was the benefactor of Hull Grammar School, donating £80 and 20,000 bricks in 1583 for its rebuilding, as well as founding a hospital for ten poor women and providing the town with a gold chain to be worn by mayoresses.

  • The Golfer's Annual for 1869-70
ONE ILLIKG AND SIXPEN : No. G-/PO2.. * « GOLFER'S ANNUAL FOR 18.69-70. COMPILED AMD EDITED BY CHARLES MACARTHFR. AYE: TROTTED AND PUBLTSIIED BY HENRY & GRANT. 16 PKEFACE. GOLF, the National Game of Scotland, and one of the most enticing of out-door exercises, is now so extensively indulged in as to deserve, at least, some statistical publication. A few years ago a work similar1 to this was published, but was not continued. Since then the practice of the Game has rapidly extended; and many solicitations having recently boon made to the Editor to bring out a GOLFER'S ANNUAL, his love for the Game, and his desire to gratify Golfers and others, induced him to undertake the work. The ANNUAL contains much interesting matter, such as a record of all the Golf Clubs at present known, with their respective. Competitions and Tournaments during the last three years, the llules of the Game observed by different Clubs, as well as other incidents; and the details of tho Competitions for the Champion Belt since its institution by the Prestwick Golf Club have been deemed of sufficient importance to entitle them to consider- able space. While imperfections may be apparent, it. is hoped that, though not claimed on its merits, the object of the ANNUAL will secure it a passport for this year, and that sufficient encouragement will be j^'ven for the appearance of its suc- cessor. The thanks of the. Editor avo due, and are now warmly tendered, to the Secretaries of the different Clubs, and others, who so readily furnished information in aid of his efforts.' 1JRUNTON C'OTTAGK, LONDON ROAD, EDINBURGH, Fubfuaiu, 1S70.
