There was a wonderful cheerful festive atmosphere on Christmas Day at the Holt Community Centre, as 115 people joined together to celebrate Christmas. Headed up for the 4th year by Holt Community Café, a large team of volunteers cooked, served food, befriended and joined in the singing as a traditional turkey meal was enjoyed by all, followed by Christmas pudding and custard. Much of the food was donated by businesses and individuals from the town, with particular thanks going to Allards Butchers of Holt, who again donated all the delicious succulent turkey for the meal and Holt Fish Bar, who provided potatoes ready peeled, saving us much prep time on Christmas Eve. Maureen Seekings did amazing work with her guess the weight of the cake and tombola, which raised a huge amount of money, and many other individuals supplied festive foodstuff, with far too many to mention here but their contributions were so appreciated and we thank them for helping. Also supporting the festive efforts with decorations for the tables were Tesco, Thoughtful Expressions and Edgefield Nurseries and thanks to their generosity the room looked really beautiful. The café was also blessed with many financial gifts towards the work, which all helped to make the day a special one. It is a huge endeavour to plan, prepare and cook the Christmas Lunch every year, with planning starting at the end of the summer in order to make the day a success. However, thanks to the enthusiasm of the volunteers from the Holt Community Café and those who joined the team for the event, it was also great fun and very rewarding. Being able to provide a safe, fun and welcoming environment for Christmas Day, a day that many find challenging for many reasons, is so important in our increasingly fractured society. Contrary to belief, we have a large range of ages and backgrounds attending on the day and it makes for a great family atmosphere, albeit a huge family! With games, live entertainment provided by Charles Davison, tombola and raffle, carol singing and even the Queen’s Speech on the cinema screen this year, there was much to entertain us, but it was in the individual interactions on each table, with people chatting, meeting and enjoying each other’s company where the real magic happened. With Reverend Michael Godward reminding us of the true meaning of Christmas and a powerful testimony of redemption through faith by local resident Aiden Matthams, the day was full of poignant and thought-provoking messages. Needless to say, none of this would be possible were it not for our amazing, hardworking and committed volunteers, who again gave of their time and energy so selflessly this year. We are constantly told that Christmas is a time to be with your family; for some people this is not possible for many varied reasons or they have no family. I am of the opinion that we should instead consider that Christmas is a time to be with our fellow man whoever that may be, neighbours, friends, or even strangers who need the company of others. Surely that applies to us all; as the saying goes, no man is an island, and we struggle to thrive when loneliness and solitude become our reality. For all those who came and served on Christmas Day, may we take this opportunity to thank you sincerely and publicly, and commend you for your amazing work. Judging by the joyful atmosphere on the day, it was truly worth it. Our thanks also go out to all those in the town who contributed in other ways to the day; without your ongoing support we would not be able to do our vital work in the community. The Holt Community Café continues to meet at the Holt Community Centre on a Thursday lunchtime from 11.00am to 1.30pm every week. If you would like to be a part of the team, please do give us a call or pop in and have lunch to see what we’re all about. The café is open to all, we make no charge for our food although donations can be made if you would like to contribute to the ongoing work. It is a great place to get to know others, connect with your community and make friends. We look forward to seeing you there!
