THOUGHT for the DAY: Do coffins have lifetime guarantees? JOKE of the WEEK: Dermot McCann opened the morning newspaper on St. Patrick’s Day and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died. He quickly 'phoned his best friend Reilly. “Did ye see the paper?” asked Dermot. “They say I died.” “Yes, I saw it.” replied Reilly. “Where are ye callin' from?” “I’m not yet dead, you idiot.” Dermot shouted, “But as me best friend, I’ve a favor ta ask of ye.” “Of course, what can I do for ye?” Reilly said. “Well, ya know that bottle of hundred year old Irish whiskey I been savin’ all me life on the mantel? Well, when I finally do die, would ye promise to pour it slowly over me grave?” There was a long silence as Reilly paused to think, then replied, “No problem Dermot... but would ya mind terribly if I strained it through me kidneys first?” QUOTE for the DAY: “Ethical conduct of business, emphasized and spread throughout the world, will greatly diminish the inclination and disposition on the part of the peoples of the different nations to fight one another.” Guy Gundaker, Rotary Club of Philadelphia, STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW March 9, 1959: The Doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in NY. Barbie’s creator was , who co-founded , Inc. with her husband in 1945. After a trip to Germany, she returned with the rights to a popular German doll named Lilli. It was redesigned and renamed Barbie after her daughter, Barbara. The Lilli doll was based on a German comic strip character and marketed as a racy gag gift to adult men in tobacco shops. Mattel used its sponsorship of the Mickey Mouse Club to promote the doll. The rest is history. The first Barbie sold for just $3.00. A mint condition, first edition Barbie sold at auction in 2016 for $27,450. (That’s a healthy profit) Barbie’s full name is actually Barbara Millicent Roberts. Barbie stood 11'’ tall with a waterfall of blond hair and was the first American doll with an adult figure and features, though...“If she were a real woman, she’d stand 5'9" tall, have a 39" bust, an 18" waist, 33" hips and a size 3 shoe..." said the Huffington Post. "... she'd have to walk on all fours due to her proportions.” Responding to public demand, Ruth Handler created a boyfriend for Barbie, named , after her son and later a sister, Stacie. Then came her best friend, and a little sister, Skipper. Barbie has generated huge sales–and a lot of controversy. Many women saw Barbie as an alternative to traditional 1950s gender roles. She has had over 130 carreers/jobs, from stewardess, doctor, pilot and astronaut to Olympic athlete and even U.S. presidential candidate. Others thought Barbie’s never-ending supply of designer outfits, cars and “Dream Houses” encouraged materialism. But it was Barbie’s appearance that caused controversy. Her tiny waist and enormous breasts led many to say she gave little girls an unrealistic and harmful example, fostering negative body images. Who cares? Sales are still soaring, topping 1 billion dollars annually by 1993. Since 1959, more than 1,005,250,000 dolls in the Barbie family have been sold around the world and Barbie is now a bona fide global icon. In fact, Ukrainian model Valeria Lukyanova (known as “the real Barbie”), is famous for her resemblance to a Barbie doll. To enhance the Barbie effect Lukyanova uses makeup and contact lenses, has had breast implants, and sculpts her body with strict daily gym workouts and a rigid liquid diet. She weighs just 100 lbs and makes her living being Barbie. (Show of hands - how many of you have, or have had, a Barbie or two in your house? Remember, Rotarians don’t lie!) Anyway....Barbie is 59 years old today...lookin’ good girl! USELESS FACT OF THE DAY: Daylight Saving Time: It is observed in all the USA except Hawaii and Arizona. Only 26% of Americans want to keep it. Why? Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket. (Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead this Sunday.) HOW ROTARIANS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE Rotarians make amazing things happen, like: Breaking the cycle of poverty for women: Most of the women living in rural Guatemala do not have the collateral to get loans from regulated financial institutions. The Rotary Club of Guatemala de la Ermita helped 400 local women complete financial literacy courses so they could pool their money and fund their own microlending program....Skills development, business training: In Esmeraldas, Ecuador, Rotary members helped grant more than 250 microloans and train more than 270 community members in sewing, baking, plumbing, microcredit, business management, and leadership.....Sustainable farming: In west Cameroon, soil erosion and loss of soil fertility have significantly reduced farmers’ harvests. Rotary members gave farmers the skills they needed to improve soil fertility, control soil erosion, and market their produce. The results: increased crop yields and profits. The Rotary Foundation spent $9.2 million to grow local economies and reduce poverty last year. Your dollars make a difference!
