The study was employed in Irish AID Operational Research and Technology Dissemination Project (ORTDP) areas of Areka mandate. This study was undertaken to analyse factors affecting level of income earned from Potato and summarize benefits of utilizing improved potato variety and full agricultural packages in the district. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 80 sample households from two sample kebele. In the study, both primary and secondary data sources were used. Simple Linear Regression Model was employed to identify factors affecting level of income earned from improved potato production by resource poor farmers in the district. Results showed that using improved potato variety increase the production and productivity of the specific commodity and there help the resource poor farmers to build asset. -

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to investigate threats to women’s land rights and explore the effectiveness of land certification interventions using evidence from the Land Investment for Transformation (LIFT) program in Ethiopia. More specifically, the study aims to provide evidence on the extent that LIFT contributed to women’s tenure security. The research used a mixed method approach that integrated quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative information was analyzed from the profiles of more than seven million parcels to understand how the program had incorporated gender interests into the Second Level Land Certification (SLLC) process. -

Using Geospatial Techniques in the Selection of Potential Ecotourism Sites in Menz-geramidir District, Ethiopia Baykedagn Taye 1 Sintayehu Legesse Gebre2,3* Dessalegn Obsi Gemeda2 Kefelegn Getahun1 Abstract Ecotourism is expressed as when tourists are attracted to a given geographic area (i.e. space) which has its own available natural, environmental, and socioeconomic resources by considering environmental sustainability, local benefit, and promotion. Space is an elementary part of ecotourism activities. Hence, the aim of this study is to identify potential ecotourism sites in Menz-geramidir district mainly by considering the natural features. Using weighting of each factor, three criteria and five-factor maps are identified, namely: landscape (land use land cover map), topography (elevation and slope map) and accessibility (road and river map). Those identified factor maps first ranked based on expert opinion, and then the weight of influence ofeach factor was computed by pair-wise comparison technique which is one of AHP method. The image classification was carried out in ERDAS imagine software using supervised image classification method. The image classification accuracy assessment indicates that the overall accuracy is 84% and the overall Kappa coefficient is 0.80. The final ecotourism potential sites model map was created based on the linear combination of factors with their respective weights in ArcGIS overlay extension and presented using FAO`s suitability scheme into four classes. The result showed that11% is highly suitable and lies to the eastern part of the study area. Generally,major suitable and moderately suitable area accounts for 75.6 % and marginally suitable area for 13.5 % and the not suitable area is 0.06 %. -

Abattoir survey of hydatidosis was conducted during routine meat inspection activity on randomly selected 384 cattle encountered at Bele Municipality Abattoir. Ante-mortem examination was conducted to note the breed, age, sex and body condition of study animals. These animals were given number in order to identify them during the postmortem examination. Post mortem examination was conducted to note the presence of hydatid cysts. A total of 56 (14.57%) cattle were affected with hydatid cyst. The study shows that there was significant variation in the prevalence of hydatid cyst in different peasant association (p<0.05). However, no such association was observed in prevalence of hydatid cysts according to sex, age, breed and body condition of slaughtered animals (p=0.499, p=0.086, p=0.613, p=0.140, respectively). The study period of the economic loss due to organ condemnation associated to bovine hydatidosis at the abattoir was estimated 6,720.00 Ethiopian Birr. -

The Status of Cultural Competence at a Health Care Service Setting in South West Ethiopia: The Case of Jimma University Specialized Hospital Sisay Alemayehu1 and Dejene Teshome2 Abstract: Nowadays, cultural competence has become an important component of health care services. Hence, this study intends to examine the status of cultural competence at Jimma University Specialized Hospital. We used purposive sampling technique to select physicians, patients and administrative staff informants. We then conducted non-participant observation, in depth interviews, key informant interviews and focus group discussion to generate data. The findings from this study reveal that the health care service at the specialized hospital is less in touch with cultural competence. A number of barriers impede the provision of culturally competent health care in the hospital. The study suggests that national and organization level policies should be in place to integrate cultural competence into health care services. Background Culture is a very important concept in anthropology. It is a society's shared, learned knowledge base and behavior patterns and guides how people live, what they generally believe and value, how they communicate, and what their habits, customs, and tastes are. Culture influences the ways in which we interpret and perceive health and illness and our choices in providing and seek- ing care are influenced by our culture (Sobo and Loustaunau, 2010; Winklman, 2009:2). For instance, since culture greatly influences our ideas of what we think is normal or not, our inter- pretations of health and illness together with the processes of seeking care are contingent on our cultural background. One of the major challenges facing health care professionals is when there is a missing link between the ideas, norms and values they acquired at medical schools and that of their patients. -

The unmet need for family planning services in Ethiopia is believed to be high (26%) while the already available services do not appear to be optimally used by potential clients. It was assessed the quality of family planning services provision. Facility based quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional study based on James Bruce analytical framework was employed from May 1-30, 2016. Three hundred one (301) family planning service users for exit interview and 40 female clients observed while taking service and 4 service providers from four health centers participated for in-depth interview. Facility audit was made on four health centers. -

Ethiopia: the State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources
ETHIOPIA This country report is prepared as a contribution to the FAO publication, The Report on the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources. The content and the structure are in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines given by FAO in the document Guidelines for Preparation of Country Reports for the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources (2010). These guidelines set out recommendations for the objective, scope and structure of the country reports. Countries were requested to consider the current state of knowledge of forest genetic diversity, including: Between and within species diversity List of priority species; their roles and values and importance List of threatened/endangered species Threats, opportunities and challenges for the conservation, use and development of forest genetic resources These reports were submitted to FAO as official government documents.
