What do we really know about worker co-operatives? Virginie Pérotin Icon or graphic 2 What do we really know about Worker Co-operatives? Virginie Pérotin is Professor of Economics at Leeds University Business School and specialises in the effects of firm ownership and governance on performance, worker co-operatives, employee ownership and profit sharing. Previous academic and research roles include positions at the International Labour Office, the London School of Economics and the Centre d’Etude des Revenus et des Coûts (CERC) in the French Prime Minister’s Office in Paris. Professor Pérotin has also acted as a consultant to the European Commission, World Bank and OECD on issues of profit-sharing, employee ownership and employee involvement schemes. Executive summary The idea that employees can run their own firms might sound unrealistic to some. This study looks at international data on worker-owned and run businesses in Europe, the US and Latin America and compares them with conventional businesses. It also reviews international statistical studies on the firms’ productivity, survival, investment and responsiveness. It finds that worker co-operatives represent a serious business alternative and bring significant benefits to their employees and to the economy. There are thousands of worker-run businesses in Europe, employing several hundred thousand people in a broad range of industries, from traditional manufacturing to the creative and high-tech industries. Because worker co-operatives are owned and run by them, employees in worker-owned co-operatives have far more say in the business, from day-to-day concerns through to major strategic issues. The largest study comparing the productivity of worker co-operatives with that of conventional businesses finds that in several industries, conventional companies would produce more with their current levels of employment and capital if they behaved like employee-owned firms. -

"The Jesus Movement" Luke 4:14-21; Luke 5:27-32; Acts 1:6-8 January 25, 2015 Rev. Kelly Love Davis United Methodist Church We are focused on Jesus this month. My sermons this month have been exploring various qualities we see in Jesus of Nazareth. My hope is that this close look at Jesus also helps us understand the impact Jesus Christ continues to have in the lives of Christians today – and especially the impact Jesus Christ has on you and me. I hope this sermon series will get you thinking and talking about who Jesus is to you. Because if you listen in on the public conversation about who this Jesus is and what it means to be Christian – the conversation as it plays out in the public sphere in the U.S. – if you listen to what is being said in the wider culture, you will hear a whole range competing or conflicting understandings of Jesus and the Christian faith. In the face of these varied understandings of Jesus and Christianity, I want to be able to say who Jesus Christ is to me and why I call myself a follower of Jesus. I want you to be able to explain confidently who Jesus Christ is to you, and why you call yourself a follower of Jesus. All the aspects of Jesus I am highlighting are heavily influenced by the work of scholar Marcus Borg. Marcus Borg died this week. It is impossible to measure how much Marcus Borg has done to help contemporary Christians think deeply about Jesus and the Christian life. -

The criteria for determining who or what qualifies as subcultures, and the most effective ways to study them, are based on these assumptions. This project seeks to address these traditional modes of studying subcultures and discover ways in which their modification may lead to new understandings and ways of studying subcultures in the contemporary moment. This will be done by suggesting a change in the criteria of examining subcultures from that of deviance or resistance to identification with a collection of images, symbols, rituals, and narratives. The importance of this distinction is the ability to utilize the insights that studying subcultures can offer while avoiding the faults inherent in speaking for or at a subculture rather than with or from it. Beyond addressing theoretical concerns, this thesis aims to apply notions of subcultural theory to study the online community of Reddit, in particular, a subset known as r/trees–a virtual repository for those images, symbols, rituals, and narratives of cannabis subculture. R/trees illustrates the life and vibrancy of a unique subcultural entity, which to this point has evaded a cultural studies analysis. To that end, this project advocates for the importance of the cultural studies approach to analyzing cannabis subculture and further, to insert the findings of this study into that gap in the literature. -
