Masmidei Hasiyum: Children Take an Active Part in the Siyum Hashas Masmidei HaSiyum: Children take an active part in the Siyum HaShas March 15, 2019 Have You Heard? If not, you will. It is on its way – to your yeshiva, your school, your child. What is it? Agudas Yisroel’s learning initiative that is changing the world for our children: The Masmidei HaSiyum Program. Recently unveiled at yeshivos and chadorim everywhere, this ground-breaking program has already been met with tremendous enthusiasm. A Look Back – A Look Forward It’s hard to believe it was almost seven years ago, but remember the last Siyum HaShas? For many, the most stirring and heartwarming parts of that global siyum were the moments when the youngest children – our precious kinderlach from across the world- sang together and joined in The Siyum to be part of kedushas Limud HaTorah along with the tens of thousands of mesaymim. Children are the future of Klal Yisroel, it is their learning that is therefore a key part of the upcoming Siyum HaShas, to take place in MetLife Stadium, and around the world, on January 1, 2020. Everywhere, preparations are well underway for this world-wide event. In the spirit of Rav Moshe Shapiro’s ongoing vision for united achdus in learning and harbotzas haTorah, Agudas Yisroel is hard at work. Many new learning programs have already been successfully implemented for maximizing the potential for the 13th Siyum HaShas to be mekadesh shem shomayim. These programs include Chavrei HaSiyum, for shuls and communities to divide up the learning on their own schedules but still be part of the overall Siyum, as well as the Chaburah initiative which assists in more Daf Yomi chaburos being spread across the country and the globe. Nothing, however, is more precious than encouraging the increased learning of our children. Rabbi Yaakov Bender, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva Darchei Torah, shares his passion for the Masmidei HaSiyum program based on years of experience as a renowned mechanech: “When a child makes a siyum on a masechta, or a seder, it’s such a plus for his entire future life. He becomes part of the greater Klal Yisroel.” The Program Itself Carefully designed to promote the building of success upon success, students will be seamlessly logging their exact amount of learning each day. Based on their progress, they earn tickets for exciting weekly raffles and prizes to keep the momentum going. One Rebbe or faculty member at each school acts as the ‘Masmidei HaSiyum ambassador’, collecting and organizing material to help the system run smoothly and keep the boys on track. The sense of accomplishment they will feel promotes good will throughout the yeshiva, and generates ongoing anticipation of the global Siyum and beyond. The program also acts as a unifier to promote achdus not only within individual yeshivos, chadorim, and schools, but in the learning of our youth wherever they are – the world over- united under one banner of Limud HaTorah. Young children through teens go from being merely spectators to true “mesaymim,” via the collective and organized learning of Tinokos Shel Bais Raban. Dor L’Dor “To have the incredible zechus to see grandfathers, fathers and sons all learning together along with other family members making siyumim… that is a dream come true.” A key component of the Masmidei HaSiyum initiative is the “Dor L’Dor” program. This aspect will allow for collective family siyumim that will span generations. What better way to cement the bonds of mishpocha, and enjoy collective nachas as a family siyum becomes part of the global Siyum HaShas? Mishna Rishona Another exciting motivational tool – already in use in New York yeshivos, is the Mishna Rishona program which allows talmidim to call in and learn by phone. They are able to listen to Rabbi Fishel Schachter’s transcribed and translated masechtos – (so far Masechos Moed, Nezikin, and Kodshim are all up and running) and after each perek, the bochur takes a test. If he passes, he is credited and gets more tickets. This will be a tremendous boost starting January 2nd 2020- after the Siyum HaShas – for continued learning for all Masmidei HaSiyum. To that end, every single Masechta in Shas is slated to be recorded by Rabbi Schachter for use by the Masmidim. Additionally, it is a great way for students to learn right now – logging their time on Mishna Rishona as well, while they continue amassing points toward Masmidei HaSiyum. Emotions Hit Hard – Memories Linger Rabbi Elimelech Chanales, Menahel, Yeshiva Derech HaTorah gives a long- range view: “The Siyum HaShas becomes bigger and greater the more the children get involved.” Masmidei committee member Reb Yechiel Eisenstadt insightfully notes: “Looking back, many felt that one of the most moving, and emotionally powerful moments at the last global Siyum HaShas was when Boruch Levine sang ‘vizakeinei ligadel bonim uvnei vonim’, while the children who were taking part and making their own siyumim stood proudly nearby on stage singing along.” With this in mind, a major presentation is planned for the coming Siyum HaShas to involve the children directly in the program. This initiative is inspired by the heartwarming moments that stay in our collective memory, inspiring us all to push further as we raise the coming generation to embrace, and to truly love Torah learning. “One of the most important aspects of being mechanech children is to be able to truly make them feel a Simchas HaTorah, explains Rabbi Dovid Nojowitz, National Director of Torah Umesorah, “One of the best ways to do that, is through making siyumim.” Reb Shrage Goldschmidt, devoted member of the Masmidei HaSiyum committee, adds his own personal feelings: “A child may go with his father or grandfather to witness The Siyum, but how much more powerful an experience will it be if he feels he’s not only watching others make a siyum, but he’s making his own!” Future Generations….Kinyan leads to Ahava… Rabbi Armo Kuessous, Director, Masmidei HaSiyum, has a dream – “I want every single child to feel: I have a sense of belonging here, I’m not just here as a spectator.” To that end, Rabbi Kuessous is working tirelessly to get the Masmidei HaSiyum program into as many yeshivos as possible. “That feeling of accomplishment can catapult our talmidim toward greater and greater heights. We need to instill it in our children all over the world.” Last cycle, 16,000 children were involved in their ownsiyumim . 370,000 Mishnayos and 1.8 million lines of Gemara were learned. “Now that we have began the process of contacting schools all over the world to introduce this year’s Masmidei program,” says Rabbi Kuessous, “the excitement has been overwhelming. With this incredible enthusiasm in the learning of our youth just bubbling over already, can you imagine what will take place,iy”H , this time around?” Many tens of thousands of boys are expected to participate in Masmidei HaSiyum, and iy”H approximately 30,000 boys will attend The Siyum in person. What an amazing zechus to have all these children there learning lizecher nishmas a loved one. The Masmidei program brings home the message of ‘ki hem chayenu’, truly internalizing what it means for Torah to give life. Children will not only be awed by the wondrous display and spectacle of Kavod HaTorah, but they will be making it happen. “By completing just one section of Torah”, exclaims Rabbi Bender with his trademark heartfelt sincerity, “the child is driven to learn more and more. He is learning from simcha …because he enjoys it!” This is the precious gift available to all future young mesaymim at this year’s Siyum HaShas. May we all be zoche to see the nachas of the next generation flourishing inLimud HaTorah..

KAJ NEWSLETTER January 9, ‘20 י"ב טבת תש"פ A monthly publication of K’hal Adath Jeshurun Volume 50 Number 4 New Security Measures In light of the recent sobering events in Jersey City and Monsey, we are reminded ever more of our tenuous Golus-situation and the need for vigilance and security. The Kehilla has implemented the following new security measure: Access to the Shul now requires the use of a code. The only two doors to be used to enter the Shul are the front left door (main entrance) and the ramp door (south side). All women should use the ramp door (only) when entering the Shul. We realize that this is an inconvenience, but the Board believes that it is a necessary step to take in light of recent events. The Board of Trustees is considering additional security measures as well, which will also cover 90 Bennett Avenue. At a recent meeting with elected officials and police, the police department’s dedicated Houses of Worship squad car was mentioned; this car makes periodic check-up patrols around neighborhood Shuls. • TORAH INSIGHTS from RABBI ELI BABICH So the Men Took That Gift, and They Took with Them Double the Money, As Well As Benjamin. T
SHABBAT, DECEMBER 28, 2019 - KISLEV 30, 5780 PARSHAT MIKEITZ (Pgs. 222, 890 & 768) ROSH CHODESH CHANUKAH TORAH INSIGHTS FROM RABBI ELI BABICH So the men took that gift, and they took with them double the money, as well as Benjamin. They made their way down to Egypt, where they presented themselves to Joseph. When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to his house steward, “Take the men into the house; slaughter and prepare an ani- mal, for the men will dine with me at noon.” The man did as Joseph said, and he brought the men into Joseph’s house. But the men were frightened at being brought into Joseph’s house. “It must be,” they thought, “because of the money replaced in our bags the first time that we have been brought inside, as a pretext to attack us and seize us as slaves, with our pack of animals.” (Miketz 43:15-18) Upon returning to Egypt a second time, the brothers were taken into the palace to dine with Yosef. As it was highly unusual for common visitors to be invited to dine with the viceroy himself, the brothers suspected that Yosef’s invitation was a pretext to imprison them. Many of the commentaries associated this episode with a prior incident that occurred in last week’s parsha. After throwing Yosef into the pit, the Torah noted, “…and [they] took him and cast him into the pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. Then they sat down to a meal…” The Sforno explained the brothers were so confident they committed no wrong by throwing Yosef into the pit, they subsequently sat down for a lavish meal.

OBSERVANCE Women Join Talmud Celebration As the daf yomi cycle of Talmud learning concludes this week, a Jerusalem study group breaks a barrier By Beth Kissileff | July 30, 2012 7:00 AM | Comments: 0 (Margarita Korol) This week, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to gather in various venues around the world for what’s being billed as “the largest celebration of Jewish learning in over 2,000 years.” The biggest American event, in New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Aug. 1, is expected to fill most of the arena’s 90,000 seats. The occasion is the siyum hashas, the conclusion of a cycle of Talmud study first proposed by Meir Shapiro, rabbi of Lublin, at the First World Congress of World Agudath Israel—an umbrella organization A Different Voice representing ultra-Orthodox Jewry—in Vienna in 1923. When a woman learns the art of Torah Shapiro’s idea was that Jews around the world could chanting, she realizes she is part of a build unity by studying the same page of Talmud at the new religious tradition—as well as a very same time. If a Jew learns one page per day, known as old, sacred one daf yomi, it will take almost seven and a half years to By Sian Gibby complete all 2,711 pages of the Babylonian Talmud. This week’s siyum hashas marks the conclusion of the 12th cycle of daf yomi study since 1923. Historically, one group of Jews has often been limited in access to this text: women. The ultra-Orthodox world does not, for the most part, approve of women studying Talmud; as one rabbi representative of this view, or hashkafa, explains, such scholarship is “not congruent with the woman’s role” in Judaism.

  • Hundreds of Thousands Celebrate 13Th Siyum Hashas
Hundreds of Thousands Celebrate 13th Siyum HaShas January 2, 2020 The 13th Global Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi was held on Wednesday, January 1, with the participation of hundreds of thousands of people. The Siyum HaShas – literally “the completion of the Six Orders [of the Talmud]” – is the celebration of the completion of the Daf Yomi program, a seven-and-a-half-year cycle of learning one folio page of the Talmud daily, with 2,711 pages of the Babylonian Talmud being covered in sequence. The idea of Jews all across the world studying the same page of Talmud each day, with the goal of completing the entire Talmud, was presented at the First World Congress of Agudath Israel in Vienna on August 16, 1923 by Rabbi Meir Shapiro. His idea was greeted enthusiastically, including by many Jewish leaders in Europe and America, and the first cycle of Daf Yomi began on the first day of the holiday of Rosh Hashanah that year, September 11, 1923. Ever since then, Jews participating in the program cover one page a day, studying the text by themselves, with a group, or by listening to a lecture. A typical daily Daf Yomi lecture takes one hour. Daf Yomi unifies the Jewish people, allowing Jews across the world and from any background to study the very same text each day, providing a commonality of purpose and injecting Jewish pride in its adherents. The Talmud is written largely in Aramaic, and thus a translation of the Talmud, specifically the popular ArtScroll Schottenstein Edition of the Babylonian Talmud, an English-language and Hebrew-language translation and elucidation, has been credited with significantly increasing the number of participants in the Daf Yomi program.

MICROPHONES IN HAND, THEIR VOICES EMERGE FROM A DEEP PLACE IN THEIR SOUL WHERE BARRIERS NO LONGER EXIST BY Meir Wolfson PHOTOS Matis Goldberg, Yinon Fuchs 46 MISHPACHA 27 Av 5772 | August 15, 2012 MISHPACHA 47 Singing Their Hearts Out The Key To TheirSouls Did Reb Shlomo Carlebach envision this moving rendition of his “Tov L’hodos LaShem” when he wrote his classic melody to those words so many years ago? If you were sitting at the Siyum HaShas in Jerusalem’s Binyanei Hauma on Sunday, August 5, you might have been one of those who burst into spontaneous clapping and rose to dance to the electrified beat. Among flashing cameras and stage lights, the excited ten-man Pirchei Seeach choir opened their act in perfect sync, and then gave way to the clear, sweet voice of their star soloist, “Avremel,” whose powerful notes and perfect harmony transfixed the crowd. At that point, you might have taken a second look at the stage to remind yourself who Avremel is. Avremel is a severely autistic young man in his 20s, so uncommunicative that he cannot respond to any verbal instructions — even from his beloved choir leader, the indefatigable Chaim Sofer. One of the only windows into Avremel’s soul — and those of his fellow choir members — is music. Seeach Sod in Jerusalem cares for 650 children and young adults with disabilities that range from slight emotional difficulties to severe autism and Down syndrome, mainstream- ing them and letting them shine in their own way.

one Authoritative and Accessible the year 2005 was a big one for ArtScroll. It marked the completion of the seventy- third and final volume of their Talmud Bavli: The Schotten- stein Edition, a massive work of thirty- five thousand pages, involving over eighty rabbinic scholars for more than fifteen years, at a blistering produc- tion rate of one volume every nine weeks.1 No other publication has more definitively signaled ArtScroll’s ascent in the publishing world. Several other ArtScroll books have had a dramatic impact on the English- language Jewish public sphere, such as The Complete ArtScroll Siddur (their basic prayer book) and even their best- selling cookbook, Kosher by Design.2 But ArtScroll’s Talmud is unique in terms of the intellectual, symbolic, and financial resources at stake for a project of this magnitude, as well as its impact on the relationship of the publisher with its patrons, customers, critics, and even competing publishers.3 Let us recall here the status of the Babylonian Talmud as arguably the central text of Rabbinic Judaism. It consists of the written record of what is known in Jewish tradition as the Torah she be’al peh (the Oral Law), orig- inally transmitted to Moses on Mt. Sinai alongside the Torah she bi khtav (the Written Torah, i.e., the Hebrew Bible), and systematized by a long tradition of authoritative commentators.4 More than any other text in the Jewish tradition, it symbolizes the shift in ancient Israelite religion from a temple cult or ga nized around sacrificial practices to the religion of a 30 “people of the book,” living in diaspora, in the aftermath of the destruc- tion of the Temple at Jerusalem.
