Newsletter Rev 081004.Indd volume 10, number 1 • spring/summer 2004 IN THIS ISSUE: Hot Shot is Coming to a Bar Near You 2 Clinic Kicks- Hot Shot is not the name of a new trendy cocktail. Between 2002 and 2003 there was a 22% increase, most of them in gay men. It was time to get the word out in a more effective way. He was given a tour and a briefing about AIDS in the A & PI community and the services provided by APICHA. Council Member Gerson represents Lower Manhattan including Chinatown. Hot Shot… (continued from cover) The program keeps growing and now offers testing for HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis, cholesterol, and administers hepatitis A and B vaccines, flu shots, smoking patches, and drug abuse information. Bars that have held successful events include SBNY, Therapy, The View, XL, Urge, and The Eagle. At one of these bars, 4% of the men tested were seropositive and did not know it. To date more than 183 men have participated and 5 tested positive. So the next time you are standing in a bar and a stranger comes up to you and asks about your health, don’t think he is coming on to you. He might be one of the Hot Shots. We have much to be proud of this month, pride in our LGBTQ, same-gender- loving, queen, king, kinky, homo, femme, butch, powerful identities. Travers Scott Clemson University While sexual and gender minorities’ struggles for equality in marriage, military service, and other aspects of social life move haltingly forward, long-standing and powerful aspects of queer infrastructure crumble. One of the “Top Ten LGBT [Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans] Stories of 2009” at The Huffington Post was the closings of queer-specialty and -friendly bookstores (Browning, 2010). Recent closures, some of stores over four decades old, include Oscar Wilde in New York City (this country’s oldest gay bookstore and considered by many to be the world’s first), Lambda Rising in Baltimore and Washington DC, Suspect Thoughts in Cleveland, Bailey/Coy in Seattle, Out Word Bound in Indianapolis, OutLoud in Nashville, White Rabbit in Raleigh, NC, and A Different Light in Los Angeles. Closures earlier in the first decade of the 21st century included A Different Light in New York, Out Word Connections in Roanoke, Beyond the Closet in Seattle, Equal Writes in Long Beach, CA, A Brother’s Touch in Minneapolis, and Creative Visions in Manhattan.
