H. Verkhratskyi (1846–1919): at the origins of Ukrainian natural science Abstract. Among the scientists of European greatness, who at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries showed interest to the folklore of Galicia (Halychyna) and Galician Ukrainians, contributed to their national and cultural revival, one of the leading places is occupied by the outstanding Ukrainian scientist Ivan Verkhratskyi (in some other sources – Verkhratsky). He was both naturalist and philologist, as well as folklorist Copyright © 2021 L. Vaniuha, Ya. Toporivska, O. Hysa, I. Zharkova, M. Bazhanov. I. H. Verkhratskyi was also an outstanding researcher of plants and animals of Eastern Galicia, a connoisseur of insects, especially butterflies, the author of the first school textbooks on natural science written in Ukrainian. The scientist also wrote poetry and translated from foreign languages. The article covers the life and scientific and pedagogical activities of I. H. Verkhratskyi – one of the founders of Ukrainian natural science, who made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian natural terminology and nomenclature, the author of the first textbooks on botany, zoology, mineralogy. The authors believe that I. H. Verkhratskyi can be considered one of the founders of Ukrainian scientific terminology in Natural Science, and today his works in this area remain relevant. These works are also valuable from the historical and cognitive points of view as one of the sources for studying the process of formation of the Ukrainian literary language and scientific and natural terminology. I. H. Verkhratskyi devoted himself to the establishment of the Ukrainian literary language, its scientific and journalistic backgrounds, and made a significant contribution to lexicography, dialectology, and schooling. Based on the scientific publications and memoirs of his colleagues and students, the authors have recreated the main stages of his biography and considered his professional career. His activity in the field of formation of natural science terminology have been considered in detail. Dialectological materials of the scientist and researcher I. H. Verkhratskyi are still actively used to study the Galician and Transcarpathian dialects. His achievements as a scientist, teacher and popularizer of science has been summarized. Keywords: natural terminology; zoology; botany; Lviv University; Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society Introduction. The history of science can be covered from different standpoints and be equally true. One of the ways to reconstruct the history of science is to study the biographies of scientists who were at the origins of various research areas. In Ukrainian natural science, there are quite a few bright figures, which are notable not only for outstanding scientific achievements but also characterized by high moral and human qualities. An example of a man who was true to himself to the end and did not sell the scientific principles can be a prominent Ukrainian researcher of nature Ivan Hryhorovych Verkhratskyi. His merits before Ukrainian natural science are enormous: he introduced the concepts of “globe”, “equator”, “meridian”, for the first time he studied the processes of creating Ukrainian natural science terminology and nomenclature. He belongs to the constellation of prominent Ukrainian scientists of the last quarter of the XIX – early XX centuries. His name belongs to the golden fund of Lviv University. Thanks to his scientific and educational activities, the foundations of Ukrainian natural science were laid (Zhelezniak, 2005; Zagorodniuk, Parkhomenko, & Kharchuk, 2017; Kravets & Holiney, 2016). The memory about this outstanding 85 https://www.hst-journal.com Історія науки і техніки, 2021, том 11, випуск 1 History of science and technology, 2021, vol. 11, issue 1 natural scientist deserves to be preserved today as a guarantee of further development of a society that knows, appreciates and continues to develop the achievements of its predecessors. In addition, the study of the heritage of outstanding scientists of the past has, in addition to purely historical, sometimes also of great practical importance. Many areas that started in the XIX century receive further development today. Some ideas started in the XIX century are still working and are implemented today in various fields of science and technology (Holovatskyi, 2003). Literature review. The first attempts at an in-depth assessment of the life and work of I. H. Verkhratskyi can be considered obituaries written immediately after his death by prominent scientists. In the process of revived interest in life and scientific activity of I. H. Verkhratskyi, many unknown materials from his legacy were discovered. However, there is still no scientific work that would consider the contribution of I. H. Verkhratskyi in the Ukrainian natural sciences in full. Writing such a work is complicated by the fact that there is still no complete bibliography of printed works of the scientist. To date, bibliographies present only his most basic works or works devoted to one topic, which significantly narrows the possibilities to assess his activities. Until 1940, such research was not conducted at all, so historians had to rely on encyclopedic publications (Kubiyovych, 1993). In soviet times, the works of I. H. Verkhratskyi were considered by several scientists (Shumanska, 2005; Khomliak & Shenderovskyi, 2003; Shevchuk, 2008; Bezdrobnyi, Kozurskyi, & Shenderovskyi, 2012; Hamaliia, 2013; Gamaliia, Ruda, & Zabuga, 2021). The purpose of this article is to outline the life and work of Professor Verkhratskyi as an outstanding naturalist, the founder of several fields in Ukrainian natural science. Results and discussion. Ivan Verkhratskyi was born on April 26, 1846 in the village of Bilche Zolote in the Ternopil region. Here is how Vasyl Shenderovskyi writes about this region: “Ternopil. Podillia land. This region is rightly called “golden”. Nature has endowed this part of Ukraine with fertile soils, necessary water resources, honey supplying meadows and, of course, talented people. It is this land that has given humanity world- class scientists – physicists Ivan Puliui, Oleksandr Smakula and Zenon Khraplyvyi, biochemist Ivan Horbachevskyi, outstanding singer Solomiia Krushelnytska, writer Bohdan Lepkyi, Cardinal Yosyp Slipyi, composer Vasyl Barvinskyi … And among the bright stars of this galaxy the star of Ivan Verkhratskyi is shining too” (Shenderovskyi, 2006, p. 42). The family roots of I. H. Verkhratskyi were lost in time. Today, we know only a few immediate generations, whose lives are connected with the Ternopil region. Residents of the village of Kryvenke, now part of the Husiatyn administrative area, still remember Ivan’s great-grandfather, Pavel Verkhratskyi, who built a church in the village at his own expense. Later, his son Hryhorii moved to the village of Bilche 86 https://www.hst-journal.com Історія науки і техніки, 2021, том 11, випуск 1 History of science and technology, 2021, vol. 11, issue 1 Zolote (now Borshchiv administrative area, Ternopil region), where he began working as a priest. In fact, on April 26, 1846, a son, Ivan, was born, who was the youngest of four children. Vasyl Shenderovskyi writes in this regard: “The families of priests at that time made up the real Ukrainian intelligentsia. Their families were not much different from ordinary peasant families, but for a long time, the families of priests were the light that prevented the idea of national self-expression in the darkness of statelessness, cultural oppression and denationalization. Unfortunately, we still know little about them, only from individual publications. But let us mention at least the Kulchytskyis dynasty – a model of patriotic educational activities for several centuries. The Verkhratskyis also belonged to such conscious clergymen”

All provincial regions of Ukraine were chosen for this analysis. The aim of the study was to determine trends of regional indicators during the period 2012–2015. The social compo- nent of sustainability reflects the quality of life and it is focused on preserving the stability of the social and cultural systems, in particular on reducing the number of destructive conflicts between people. The basis of our study was the method of the Human Development Index rating in 2015, conducted by the State Statistics Service of Ukraine and the Institute of Demography and Social Studies named after M.V. Pukhta, but with a reduction of performance indicators to four groups (comfortable life, prosperity, decent work, education). The results of our grouping allow for developing a number of measures to respond to current trends and adjust them depending on the situation. Areas with consistently high rates of human development dimension should extend its positive experience to other regional areas of Ukraine. A significant list of areas with aver- age dimension of human development confirms the generally known trend that these areas do not conduct velopmentsystematic whichimprovement is however policy not and reflected optimal on use the of general all components welfare of that the canpeople affect in thesethe standard regions.

The article covers the phenomenon of rock music in the lives of young residents of the western regions of Soviet Ukraine, which differed significantly from the rest of the territory of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and the entire USSR. The article demonstrates the peculiarities among which this music was mastered, its existence in the youth society – from fashionable dance music to the core of nonconformitsm to the Soviet system. It was reflected in the names officially and unofficially used for rock music and its performers (Big beat, vocal-instrumental ensemble, etc.), as well as in relation to official factors (from tolerance to the prohibition). Consumers of rock music did not necessarily have to be opposed to the Soviet regime. However, the active “immersion” in rock music, and the related counterculture spheres (from the late 1960s onwards, and more and more), contributed to the formation of an alternative life style, which manifested itself in particular: listening to banned radio stations, the style of clothing that was associated with rock music, space for free performance / listening to rock music and exchanging information and impressions (“tusovka”).

How Sissi Became a Ruthenian Queen: Some Peculiarities of the Peasant Worldview Yaroslav Hrytsak The assassination of Queen Elizabeth (Sissi, 1837–98) was met with grief throughout the Habsburg lands, and Austrian-ruled Galicia was no exception.1 This is attested, inter alia, by a local Ruthenian (Ukrainian) song recorded in the Buchach region several months after the tragic event. Among its lines are the following: Вона була така добра, як та рідна мати. Як тота добра мати що нас породила, а царівна добра була, що край боронила. Скасувалa всі кайдани, вулиці тай буки, тай зазнала від ворогів тяженької муки. Hаша панна цісарівна є руського роду тай пішла ся бай купати в швaйцарськую воду. Бодай тота Швайцарія була ся розпала булa би ся цісарівна в сім краю скупала.2 The song is full of empathy for the deceased queen and could be regarded as just another example of naive peasant monarchism. What is striking here, however, is the statement that the queen shared the origins 1 See, e.g., Larry Wolff, “Dynastic Conservatism and Poetic Violence in Fin-de-Siècle Cracow: The Habsburg Matrix of Polish Modernism,” American Historical Review 106, no. 3 (June 2001): 735–64. 2 Ivan Franko, “Zrazok novozlozhenoi nar[odnoi] pisni,” Literaturno-naukovyi vistnyk 10, no. 4 (April 1900): 54. 228 Yaroslav Hrytsak of the peasants who sang the song—that she was of Ruthenian descent (ruskoho rodu). This is obvious nonsense, since Elizabeth was a Bavarian German and a Roman Catholic: in other words, nothing in her origins or status even remotely suggested any link with Ruthenian peasants in Galicia.

We also consider the influence of a conceptual lexeme on the formation of an imaginary code of the author’s language thinking. We emphasize that in Maria Matios’s prose a special panorama of a semantic and semantically symbolic field of a sin opens before a reader. Along with archetypical semas others are also activized but the conceptualization of a sin mainly turns round in the sphere of a sacred Christian world outlook. In some moments in Matios’s characters a Christian world outlook is closely connected with a ritual-magic one. We point out that connotative specification of the investigated lexeme carries unusually rich cultural and ethnic national information caused by intra- and extralingual factors. Submeanings go to the national language level, in some cases mentioned ethnically caused semantic onbuilding even dominates over a proper biblical basis. Key words: concept, sin, archetype, sema, Bible, sacred, language thinking, motivation. Ref. 11. Літ. 9. On Nik. Fabrikant and His Article Serhiy Bilenky University of Toronto ik[olai] Fabrikant was the pseudonym of Ivan Krevets'kyi, a well- N known Ukrainian intellectual who functioned as a historian, a bibliographer, and a civic activist in Austrian-ruled Galicia. In 1905, Krevets'kyi (under his pseudonym) published in Russian his arguably most famous polemical piece on the Russian censorship of Ukrainian literature in the Russian liberal periodical Russkaia mysl' (Russian Thought), one of the most widely circulating Moscow journals (with around 14,000 subscribers at its peak). Krevets'kyi’s “Kratkii ocherk iz istorii otnoshenii russkikh tsenzurnykh zakonov k ukrainskoi literature” (“A Brief Outline of the History of the Treatment of Ukrainian Literature by the Russian Censorship Laws”) was not an original publication but rather a revision of the author’s Ukrainian-language article “Ne bylo, net i byt' ne mozhet!” (“There Has Not Been, Is Not, and Cannot Be!”)1 published in 1904 in the prime Ukrainian journal Literaturno-naukovyi visnyk (Literary Scientific Herald), a literary and scholarly periodical founded by historian Mykhailo Hrushevs'kyi with the participation of such luminaries as Ivan Franko and Volodymyr Hnatiuk. Krevets'kyi was born on 14 October, 1883, in the village of Ivanivka (which today belongs to the Zhydachiv district of Lviv oblast) (Steblii 3-5; Fedunyshyn). Born in a teacher’s family, he went on to study in the prestigious Ukrainian academic gymnasium in Lviv, and in 1907 he graduated from Lviv University where he studied history under Hrushevs'kyi, with whom the young graduate relocated for a while in Kyiv.

This article considers the Soviet western borderlands' contribution to its demise. Turning to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, it suggests that late Soviet politics of empire integrated Western Ukrainians into one Soviet polity. In the late phases of Khrushchev's "Thaw," the literary journal of Lviv's Writers' Union, Zhovten (October), from 1964 to 1966 became a forum that accommodated local and national interests while adhering to an all-Soviet imperial canon. The dismiss al of its editor, poet Rostyslav Bratun', did not completely end the journal's approach to literary expression. Writers like Bratun' remained very active in the public sphere. Drawing on studies of the Soviet Union and other empires, this article rejects binary oppositions between state and society and between imperial centers and colonial peripheries. It sees the power of imperial imagi nations affecting regional and national identities1 It suggests instead that un resolved debates over issues like literature, language, and historical memory made these borderlands' integration very problematic.

Shevchenko Scientific Society, 1892–1914 Abstract This article discusses the possibilities which amateur participa- tion offered to the young Shevchenko Scientific Society – lim- ited to the description of the activities of this Society in the years 1892–1914. The Society intended to develop rapidly into an academy of sciences in the Ukrainian language, but lacked the necessary re- sources. The existing network of Ukrainian associations in East- ern Galicia, which contributed to the development of scientific exchange, was helpful in achieving that status. Before looking into the details of research agendas, the possi- bilities to use concepts of citizen science are measured for the context of the late 19th and the early 20th century.
