2018 WINONA STATE

The Winona State volleyball team entered the 2018 campaign on the national radar for the third straight season – ranked No. 17 in the AVCA Preseason Poll. In the highly-competitive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), which annually sends team to the NCAA Regional and has seen Concordia-St. Paul win the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Championship nine times in the past 11 years, Winona State was tabbed seventh in the loaded conference’s preseason poll.

The NSIC boasts eight teams, including WSU, that were either ranked or receiving votes in the 2018 AVCA Preseason Poll.

After reaching the NCAA Regional for the first time in program history in 2016, the 2017 squad picked up right where it left off. The Warriors went 21-8 (15-5 NSIC) a year ago and were undefeated in conference road matches during the regular season. Despite their lofty resume, and being ranked in the AVCA Top 25 all season, Winona State’s NCAA postseason bubble was burst at selection time.

The 2017 season marked the Warriors’ third straight 20-win season under head coach Joe Getzin, a feat that had only been ac- complished over one other span in program history (1986-88).

In his fifth season at the helm at Winona State, Getzin will lead a well-balanced Warrior team of returning veterans and promis- ing newcomers that excel on the court and in the classroom – with the 2017 team earning the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 12th straight year.

Taylor Goar returns for her final season of eligibility after missing 2017 due to injury. The senior ranks just outside the program top 10 with 1,061 kills. Goar is a two-time NSIC First Team selection and was named to the 2016 NCAA Central Regional All-Tournament Team. Fellow senior Maria Wrage earned All-Conference honors for the first time in her career last season while setting a single-season program record for hitting percentage (.357).

Seniors Jordan Runge and Sophie Wilker, along with junior Alexis Bass, round out the Warriors’ upperclassmen. Sophomore libero Becca Pagel started in all 29 matches as a freshman last year and right side Kate Masberg was a major contributor on the team that set program records for kills/set and hitting percentage. Sophomore Bre Maloney will navigate the WSU offense as the new starting setter.

The Warriors will be tested early and often with a challenging 2018 schedule which includes tournaments at Ferris State and the University of Indianapolis to open the season. Four of Winona State’s first eight matches came against teams ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Preseason Poll prior to the Warriors’ home opener in McCown Gymnasium. 2018 WINONA STATE VOLLEYBALL 2018 WINONA STATE VOLLEYBALL President Scott Olson Dr. Scott R.
