  • ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED by Anna Schafer Most of Us Have Read
ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED by Anna Schafer Most of us have read the story of Anne Frank and her diary. In much of the world it has been part of the school curriculum ever since the book's first publication in 1947. Anne’s main message has always been seen as one of optimism and conciliation in the face of the utter barbarism of her time. At the age of 14, in her diary entrance of the 15th of July, 1944. she makes her famous statement: “Still, I keep my ideals, because, in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.“ (p.237) Anne was born July 12 1929 in Frankfurt. Because of rising Anti-Semitism the family left Germany in 1933 and settled in the Netherlands. I myself was born ten years later, in April 1939 in Vienna, a year after the annexation of Austria and six months before the German attack on Poland. When I was three I was sent by train to North Germany to non-Jewish relatives, who lived in the small village of Andorf, near the Dutch border. Anne and I shared our first names, Anne. We also shared two languages and cultures, German and Dutch. However, Anne knew that her family was in hiding because they were Jews. I did not discover my Jewishness until I was an adult. We both lived through all six years of WWII. They were Anne’s last and my first years of life. There are barely 200 km between Amsterdam and Andorf and the Bergen- Belsen camp where Anne died in early March 1945 is only 150 km east of Andorf.

Characters are often seen dancing in Khutsiev’s 1960s films, yet this particu- lar scene exemplifies the youthful break of the Khrushchev Thaw from the previous generation’s hardships during World IWar II. Like his fellow revelers, the protagonist of I Am Twenty, Sergei (Valentin Popov), is free of the embittered wartime strug- gle endured by his mother, who had worked night shifts and for- aged for potatoes during the day. Without the pressure of food shortages, this new generation is free to celebrate peacetime with a fond embrace of jazz and Parisian chansons. In I Am Twenty, characters seem to drift effortlessly along pavements, buoyed by the optimism of their youth in the manner of Godard’s Breathless, and yet with a more pronounced sense of lyricism and even expressionism. Of all the major directors that emerged during the Khrushchev Thaw after Stalin’s death, when repression and censorship of artists was relaxed, Khutsiev is perhaps the least well-known outside Russia. He came from a generation that included Andrei Tarkovsky, Sergei Parajanov, Vasiliy Shukshin, Elem Klimov, and Kira Muratova, who together might be called the Soviet New Wave.

The British band played The World Turned Upside Down as their troops marched into battle. No one knows who fired the first shot, but it soon became the "Shot heard 'round the world." Revolution had come. What more fitting a theme for July 4th than Revolution? In 1992, Kip McKean wrote "Revolution Through Restoration" for Upside Down magazine. In it he describes the beginning of the church in Lexington, Massachusetts, and how it has truly become today's "shot heard 'round the world." This article explains who we are as God's modern-day movement and where we came from, better than any other single piece of which I am aware. For this reason I frequently give a copy to someone with whom I am studying the Bible or to someone from the media who wants to know more about us.

  • Rogan's List 2019
Rogan’s List 2019 Greetings WFU parents! Fond thanks to the many of you who recommended this book or that movie or the new restaurant in your home city. Keep ‘em coming! Parents who’ve seen this previously skip this graf, but if you’re new to this odd enterprise: three inspirations converged a dozen-plus years ago. As a still-singleton, felt a response was necessary to my expanding circle of married-with-kids friends’ annual Holiday Letters, tinged with a certain “here’s how life works”-ness. And I loved pal Drew Littman’s roundup of his fave movies/books of the year (Drew also originated the B game/A game you’ll see on next page). Third, I grew up with Roger Angell’s annual New Yorker rhyming ‘poem’ of boldface names, & added my own pale imitation after Angell stopped…then NYer’s Ian Frazier picked up the tradition. Shifted therefore to a ‘found poem’ of lines from songs by millennial/rising-generation musicians; this year’s is after the best-of music page below. Speaking of poems, a stanza from one long beloved, WS Merwin’s To the New Year: so this is the sound of you here and now whether or not anyone hears it this is where we have come with our age our knowledge such as it is and our hopes such as they are invisible before us untouched and still possible On to my favorites of 2019. To adapt a venerable Welsh saying, may the best artistic creations of the decade just ending be the worst of the next.

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: CLASSIFYING BIAS IN LARGE MULTILINGUAL CORPORA VIA CROWDSOURCING AND TOPIC MODELING Team BIASES: Brianna Caljean, Katherine Calvert, Ashley Chang, Elliot Frank, Rosana Garay Jáuregui, Geoffrey Palo, Ryan Rinker, Gareth Weakly, Nicolette Wolfrey, William Zhang Thesis Directed By: Dr. David Zajic, Ph.D. Our project extends previous algorithmic approaches to finding bias in large text corpora. We used multilingual topic modeling to examine language-specific bias in the English, Spanish, and Russian versions of Wikipedia. In particular, we placed Spanish articles discussing the Cold War on a Russian-English viewpoint spectrum based on similarity in topic distribution. We then crowdsourced human annotations of Spanish Wikipedia articles for comparison to the topic model. Our hypothesis was that human annotators and topic modeling algorithms would provide correlated results for bias. However, that was not the case. Our annotators indicated that humans were more perceptive of sentiment in article text than topic distribution, which suggests that our classifier provides a different perspective on a text’s bias. • 43E Festival International Du Film De La Rochelle Du 26 Juin Au 5 Juillet 2015 Le Puzzle Des Cinémas Du Monde

I analyze different visual and narrative strategies developed by the directors of youth cinema during the Brezhnev period as mechanisms for circumventing ideological control over cultural production.
