Praveet Singh, 40, who moved to New Zealand in 2003, had gone for a walk when she encountered her attacker on the street near her home. The attack left Mrs Singh with fractured eye sockets, a broken nose and bruises. The mother of two had reportedly tried to seek help from one of her neighbours but the man continued to wash his car while Mrs Singh was being assaulted. The New Zealand Herald quoted a man who said he was reluctant to intervene as he had thought it was a domestic assault. Another neighbour was also interviewed and he stated he was afraid that he might be charged with assault if he had been involved. A 26-year-old man appeared in the Manukau District Court charged with one count of common assault and another of injuring with intent to injure. In a post last Friday on a social networking site, Mrs Singh questioned the unity of Fiji-Indians living in the Papatoetoe area and said she will never be able to feel safe in her own home and street. Mrs Singh posted that an intoxicated man punched and physically abused her "in front of more than 15 Fiji- Indians who stood and watched the entire ordeal like they were watching Praveet Singh After The Attack some show, while I screamed and is very clear. What they do not say is that women’s lives are also largely unrecorded. Women, and the work they do, slip through memory’s net leaving large gaps in our collective consciousness about challenges faced and mastered, discoveries made and celebrated, collaborations forged and valued. Combating this pervasive amnesia is not an easy task. This book is a beginning in another direction, an attempt to try and construct the professional lives of four of Mumbai’s women (where the discussion has ventured into the personal lives of these women, it has only been in relation to the professional or to their public images). And who better to attempt this construction than young people on the verge of building their own professional lives? In learning about the lives of inspiring professionals, we hoped our students would learn about navigating a world they were about to enter and also perhaps have an opportunity to reflect a little and learn about themselves. So four groups of students of the post-graduate diploma in Social Communications Media, SCMSophia’s class of 2014 set out to choose the women whose lives they wanted to follow and then went out to create stereoscopic views of them.

Political activist, actor, playwright and poet, Safdar had been deeply committed, like so many young men and women of his generation, to the anti-imperialist, secular and egalitarian values that were woven into the rich fabric of the nation’s liberation struggle. Safdar moved closer to the Left, eventually joining the CPI(M), to pursue his goal of being part of a social order worthy of a free people. Tragically, it would be of the manner of his death at the hands of a politically patronised mafia that would single him out. The spontaneous, nationwide wave of revulsion, grief and resistance aroused by his brutal murder transformed him into a powerful symbol of the very values that had been sought to be crushed by his death. Such a death belongs to the revolutionary martyr. 6 PUBLICATIONS Safdar was thirty-four years old when he died.

Usha Ganguli is a well-known theatre person, and is Artistic Director of her Kolkatta based theatre company called ‘Rangkarmee’. She was invited to the Prithvi Theatre Festival 2006’ to present her play KASHINAMA. The following conversation between Atul Tewari and her took place on 11th November 2006 as part of the ‘Meet the Playwrights’ sessions. The conversation has been edited as necessary. Atul Tewari: Like always, the ‘Meet The Playwrights’ sessions are one more great initiative that Prithvi has made in order for us to come together and I am not at all depressed by the numbers present here. It seems that when Buddha started his conversations there were only five people with him. We are at least five times more than that! So here we have gathered to talk to Usha Ganguli. But I hope to meet not just the playwright because Usha is not just a playwright. She has many facets to her personality. She is an actor, a director, an activist. She is also an art administrator who is associated with the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the National School of Drama as well as with few of the important institutions in Bengal. She is of course a very well known teacher in Kolkata. She taught Hindi for many years, before she retired last year and then of course she is a playwright and a composer of music. Though she says that she was never trained formally in music, she was trained as a dancer in Bharatnatyam. This evening we will try to touch upon the many different facets of Usha’s personality.
