Iroquoia Spring Hikes 2013 Be sure to make a habit of checking out the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club website for any information pertaining to corrections, missed or added hikes to the schedule. WEEKLY WALKS EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT - Walk for Health and Fun (1.5hrs at a Fast Pace) Climb the steps and walk the streets and trails of West Hamilton. Meet at 7:10 pm. at the corner of Mohawk and Upper Paradise in the Westcliffe Mall parking lot (near Food Basics). Come along for a brisk, aerobic walk. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. Starting in April (when evening daylight returns), we will start hiking sections of the Bruce Trail as well. Leader: Paul Lewis - (905) 331-8600 or email: [email protected] EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Culham Trail Mississauga ( 1.5hrs at a moderate to fast pace) Meet at Riverwood Visual Arts Centre in Mississauga. The centre is located just north of Burnhamthorpe Rd between Mississauga Rd and Creditview Rd on Riverwood Park Lane. We will meet at the parking lot closest to VA Centre and hike along the Culham trail. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. Hike will switch to neighbourhood walks with the early onset of darkness in the late fall. Please advise hike leader if you plan to attend. Leader: Nancy Stevens [email protected] EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT - Grimsby Hikes Thursdays 7:00 pm. 1.5 hours. Meet at Lions Club Pool Parking Lot, off Main St., just west of Mountain St. lights. Hike cancelled in poor weather. Hike Difficulty Med. Wear appropriate footwear and bring water. Sometimes uneven terrain, hike routes to be varied. Optional pub stop after hike. Meet at 7:30 pm. in the Lakeshore Road parking lot just east of the Waterfront Centre and restaurant for a brisk walk along Lake Ontario, to the canal and back. Hike cancelled in poor weather. Meet for a 10:00 am. start at the Mud Street parking lot near Pritchard Road in East Hamilton Mountain. We will car-pool to Van Wagner's Beach and hike back on the Red Hill Valley Trail. Mod - 3. Partly on maps 6 & 7. Leader: Vern Erickson 905-667-4370, [email protected]. Sat. Mar. 2 - Niagara Queenston - 22.0 kms. Meet at 8:30 am. Map 2, Km. 21.9 Merritt Trail parking area on north side of Glendale Ave. Car shuttle to Km 0.0 Map 1. Hike back through Queenston Heights , Woodend Conservation Areas and the Welland Canal. Mar. 2 - War of 1812 Friendship March # 7 - Aprox. 3 hrs. Meet for a 10:00 am. start. War of 1812 historical hike revolving around the 200 years of friendship between the USA and Canada. Meet at the parking lot of Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake on the Niagara Parkway for a loop hike. Learn about the great and not so great battles, famous and infamous people who played key roles in the war of 1812. This is the Bicentennial year of the Niagara Battles. We will hike to McNeilly Rd. and hike back. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Scoop your own poop! Med - 5. Map 6. Meet at 7:00 pm. in the parking lot beside the Foodtown grocery store at the corner of Mt. Albion and Greenhill in lower east Hamilton. Park on the side of the building closest to Mt. Albion. Mar. 9 - Niagara, Short Hills - 23.0 km. Meet 8:30 am. Map 3, Km 45.1 Rockway Community Centre just east of Wessel Dr. Park on east side of the building. We car shuttle to K.m 21.9, Map 2 , and hike back past Brock University and Short Hills Provincial Park. Med - 4.5, Difficult, variable and challenging, No dogs and no dropout points. Pub stop after. Meet for 9:30 am. departure in Kerncliff Park parking lot, 2198 Kern’s Road, Burlington (just below Escarpment). See Map 9 of Bruce Trail guide (27th edition), look for parking symbol ‘P‘on north side of Kern’s Road. Note: You cannot drive south on Kern’s Road from Dundas Street (former Hwy. 5) to this park. Mar. 9 - Highway To Highway - 12.5 km Meet for a 9:00 am. start at the Tim Horton’s parking lot at the corner of Hwy 5 (Dundas Street) and Hwy 6. We will carpool to where the trail crosses Hwy. 5 and hike back. Med - 6. Leader: Dan Welsh - 905-659-4957. Tues. Mar. 12 - Man on a Mission # 2 - 1.5- 2 hrs. Meet at 7:00 pm. at the parking lot in front of Christ the King Cathedral on King St. W. beside the on-ramp to Hwy. 403 for a walk along west Hamilton’s waterfront. Med. - 2. Optional pub after. Meet for 9:30 am. departure in the front parking lot of Crawford Lake Conservation Area, at Guelph Line and Conservation Road, south of Campbellville. Admission fee of $ 7.50 per adult ($6.50 for 65 +, $5.25 for children 5 - 14), unless you have an annual pass. Loop hike. Pub stop lunch to follow. Mod. - 4. Meet for a 10:00 am. start in front of East Side Mario's, University Plaza on Osler Drive in Dundas. We will do a loop hike in the Dundas Valley on or near the Monarch Trail. Mod - 3, map 8. Meet for a 10:00 am. start on Leslie Dr. Km 18.7 (right off New Mountain Rd) We will hike through the Devil’s Punch Bowl, and then on to Felker’s Falls and back again. Med -5. Map 6. Meet at 7:00 pm. at the entrance to the Dundas Valley Golf and Country Club on King St. in Dundas at the bottom of the Dundas Hill for a loop walk on escarpment lands. Wear boots. Med. - 4. Optional pub after. Leader: Richard Reble at [email protected] or 905-560-9556 before 9:00 pm. Sat. Mar. 23 - Niagara Ball’s Falls - 23.0 km. Meet 8:30 am. Km. 66.9, Map 4. Kinsmen Community Park, off of Mountain Rd. We car shuttle to Km. 45.1, Map 3 and hike back through Louth and Ball's Falls Conservation Areas. Med - 4.5. Difficult, variable and challenging. No dogs and no dropout points. Hiking Boots. Leader: Ron Granger (519) 485-0879. 7-10 pm. Sun. Mar. 24 - Lynn Valley Trail - 22 km. Depart at 9:30 am. from Memorial Park, Simcoe. Hwy 24 south through Simcoe to Victoria St. to Woodhouse Ave. to Memorial Park. We will walk from Simcoe to Port Dover on a good rail trail and retrace our steps after lunch, looking for hints of spring. This Spring we will hike three of this area's best rail trails, Lynn Valley, 24 March, Kissing Bridge 20,21 April and Paris to Cambridge Trail 25,26 May. Med - 2. Meet for 10:00 am. start in the Hermitage parking lot of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area on Sulphur Springs Rd. in Ancaster. Be careful, it is easy to miss. Map 8. We will do a loop of this lovely area. We may be lucky enough to see some deer. Some hills. Mod - 3. Bring a lunch, water and icers. Parking fee ($9) or Hamilton Conservation Area pass.
