  • The Shropshire Enlightenment: a Regional Study of Intellectual Activity in the Late Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Centuries
The Shropshire Enlightenment: a regional study of intellectual activity in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by Roger Neil Bruton A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham January 2015 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract The focus of this study is centred upon intellectual activity in the period from 1750 to c1840 in Shropshire, an area that for a time was synonymous with change and innovation. It examines the importance of personal development and the influence of intellectual communities and networks in the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge. It adds to understanding of how individuals and communities reflected Enlightenment aspirations or carried the mantle of ‘improvement’ and thereby contributes to the debate on the establishment of regional Enlightenment. The acquisition of philosophical knowledge merged into the cultural ethos of the period and its utilitarian characteristics were to influence the onset of Industrial Revolution but Shropshire was essentially a rural location. The thesis examines how those progressive tendencies manifested themselves in that local setting.

  • The Bridges of Scotland
THE BRIDGES OF SCOTLAND By James Macnaughton INTRODUCTION No one who has visited the country described in Hamish McCunn’s evocative tone poem as “The Land of the Mountain and the Flood” can deny that its spectacular and very varied landscapes prove that it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. As indicated, the two main elements involved are the ancient mountains and the rainy climate. The latter has resulted in countless thousands of streams and rivers flowing down from the high tops to the sea coasts, and these have had a major effect on the lives of the inhabitants, because trying to cross them, particularly when in spate after heavy rain, could be very dangerous and over the millennia many lives were lost. To ease travel throughout the country fords or ferry boats were used where applicable, but obviously the more permanent and safer alternative was a bridge, and it is these ingenious and vital structures and their effect on Scottish history which I would like to look at in all their varying sizes, shapes and materials, some merely practical, others very beautiful. Bridges were and are so important that many towns and villages were named after them: Carr Bridge, Bridge of Don, Spean Bridge, Bridge of Earn, Coatbridge and most evocative of all – Rumbling Bridge – among many others. Of the thousands existing, I am going to choose a selection of the more interesting, showing how the ingenious and skilful bridge builders overcame seemingly impossible natural obstacles. THE ORIGINAL WOODEN STIRLING BRIDGE 1297 Figure 1. Artist’s concept of wooden Stirling bridge.

  • Oswestry & Beyond Heritage Open Days
OSWESTRY & BEYOND HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2020 Put on your wellies, grab your coat and step into the outdoors - our theme for 2020 is Hidden Nature. This year, we are turning our focus onto the natural world – and we’re asking you to join with us in celebrating our extraordinary natural heritage, from centuries-old trees to farmer’s fields steeped in history, from clifftop walks to urban oases and everything in between. Why Hidden Nature? Uncovering stories, sites, places and people that traditional history has overlooked or forgotten has always been at the very heart of Heritage Open Days. Our natural world, and the impact we have upon it, is as much a part of this as the rise of cities, famous battles and technological developments. In the face of climate change, modern development and other threats, now more than ever does nature need to be cherished and championed. That’s why this year we want to encourage HODs organisers, volunteers and visitors to celebrate nature, in its myriad forms, as part of the wider HODs festival. What is Hidden Nature? We want Hidden Nature to encompass the broadest possible spectrum of events, opening up areas of the countryside that aren’t normally accessible to the public and revealing the hidden history of not just our natural landscapes, but also gardens, green spaces, urban parks, orchards, vineyards, farms and forests. Nature isn’t just found in the great outdoors and our theme could also give you the opportunity to explore the Hidden Nature within our urban spaces and buildings - from the animals that live within our walls and under our feet to the origins of the timbers in our roofs, the possibilities to connect with our natural world are endless.

  • Bibliography Sources for Further Reading May 2011 National Trust Bibliography
Bibliography Sources for further reading May 2011 National Trust Bibliography Introduction Over many years a great deal has been published about the properties and collections in the care of the National Trust, yet to date no single record of those publications has been established. The following Bibliography is a first attempt to do just that, and provides a starting point for those who want to learn more about the properties and collections in the National Trust’s care. Inevitably this list will have gaps in it. Do please let us know of additional material that you feel might be included, or where you have spotted errors in the existing entries. All feedback to [email protected] would be very welcome. Please note the Bibliography does not include minor references within large reference works, such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica, or to guidebooks published by the National Trust. How to use The Bibliography is arranged by property, and then alphabetically by author. For ease of use, clicking on a hyperlink will take you from a property name listed on the Contents Page to the page for that property. ‘Return to Contents’ hyperlinks will take you back to the contents page. To search by particular terms, such as author or a theme, please make use of the ‘Find’ function, in the ‘Edit’ menu (or use the keyboard shortcut ‘[Ctrl] + [F]’). Locating copies of books, journals or specific articles Most of the books, and some journals and magazines, can of course be found in any good library. For access to rarer titles a visit to one of the country’s copyright libraries may be necessary.
