Revd John Longuet-Higgins for the West of Severn Benefice: consisting of Ashleworth, Corse, Maisemore, Hartpury, Hasfield, Staunton and Tirley.

“So what can follow that?” Vicar’s Bit Revd John Longuet-Higgins

I write on Ascension Day…

One of the joys of writing a monthly piece is imagining what collectively we will be thinking about a month ahead. In June, there will be the football of course. And to celebrate the World Cup, the church and our three primary schools are putting on a feast of football themed fun, called ‘The Pulse Games’, held at Hartpury School on Wednesday 13th June.

Yet, because I write this piece on Ascension Day, I share inwardly the disciples’ surprise at what God has done at Easter. Jesus is alive and ‘with us’, touchable and very present, on several resurrection appearances. Like the disciples, with awe and wonder flooding through me, I ask the Lord: ‘So what can follow that?’

Christ’s Ascension led to an interregnum. With Jesus gone, the disciples asked each other:’ What would life be like when the Spirit comes in power?’

In the same way, this June, our Benefice is in a time of interregnum: God has been preparing the churches of the Benefice for the future shape of things. Notably, in recent years, we have become proficient in sharing ministry together. And, in fact, Steve Godsell asked Bishop Rachel if he might join us to train here as our curate because we have this gift of shared ministry. Jesus is promising us an empowering of the Holy Spirit as we develop this gift.

Full of the life of the risen Jesus and enlivened by the Holy Spirit, our gift for shared ministry will flourish even more as we welcome the Godsell family. TOWN STREET FARM Steve Godsell is ordained Deacon at Cathedral 10.15am on Tirley Sunday July 1st. We have abandoned our normal Sunday church services, so we can go to the ordination service. Afterwards, we return to Corse and Staunton Village Hall. Please bring your contributions for a ‘bring and share  STAUNTON CROSS GARAGE lunch”’ At the end of which we shall have a special Songs of Praise. The Bleak House Chronicles Declarations of Interest Invited All great changes are preceded by chaos.

Doesn’t time fly when you are having fun? Well that’s a hypothetical question I ask myself on a regular basis and I’m still none the wiser. All Lease of Grass Keep I know is that life’s little treats come around every year but are more expensive and sometimes difficult to find. Take for instance the annual At Ashleworth, Gloucester holiday which at Bleak House is the start of the Summer Offensive. Permanent Pasture Field near Wickridge Street Marching orders are issued and the great quartermaster in chief, none other than Mrs P (who is not to be trifled with), dusts off her 1.10 Acres known as Baggars Land compendium of battle plans and issues lists. My role in this annual event has diminished year after year on account of my total inability to be a competent crystal ball gazer or be proficient at reading the Great Untrifled With’s mind. I’m not even allowed to select the clothes I would like to take so I go nowhere near the packing lists. No: my role in Ashleworth Parochial Church Council invite all of this is the supply chain, especially the acquisition of the holiday Declarations of Interest for the lease of grass keep at spongeros i.e. the spending money. Having “worked” in a bank for nigh on 40 years, I could claim to know my way around the banking system. Baggar’ Land Well, that is what I thought: Oh deluded me! First you have to find a bank. These days they are as rare as hens’ Declarations of Interest to be sent to: teeth. Tewkesbury is a great example. I swear it was a bank when I drove past it to park my car but, when I got there, it had transformed into a Charity Coffee Shop and Wine Bar. I headed into Cheltenham Caroline Saunders where, when I worked there, there were at least 5 branches. Now Ashleworth PCC Secretary there is one. There used to be over fifty staff in that branch with a Redmire Lodge counter of at least 6 cashiers and, indeed, there was one even allocated solely for withdrawals at gun point. Customer service was paramount. Ashleworth Today, there are four machines you can withdraw money from, two into GL19 4JG which you can pay money and one that did neither but can offer to sign you up for loans and credit cards and throw in a mortgage to boot. [email protected] Foreign currency – well that’s a different matter! On my visit, they had a human being (with or without a pulse, it was difficult to say) in charge of that section and I asked for £50 of Ruritanian Spongeros, a modest 01452 700742 amount but enough to fund my daily purchase of yesterday’s English newspaper and English confectionery which you have to buy to see if it ST tastes the same. Sadly, they did not have £50 pounds worth left And received by 1 AUGUST 2018, at the latest. although I could have £100 worth or indeed £500 worth, too. Confused – I bet you are because I was totally bewildered. It turns out that Further information will be given on receipt of foreign currency is now pre-packed just like shredded wheat, declarations. cornflakes and sausages. So, it was the pre-packed amount or nothing. Being ex-staff, I was given preferential treatment and was told that, Thank you. as long as I didn’t tell anyone else, Sainsbury’s had a proper Bureau de Change in their store and they offered a better rate.
