THE CITIZENS POST DAVO’S DIARY

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to everyone for today’s important league match at both ends of the table. I wish Fleet Town a pleasant afternoon with us.

Obviously, they are a club who held a very special place in my heart for over 6 years, playing over 300 games and managing the club for the vast majority of them. I had an extremely close bond with Steve Cantle their late chairman who sadly passed away, following that tragic and terribly sad situation what occurred was really not good and extremely poor from all concerned, despite what was happening we carried on fulfilling their fixtures and picking up points we never should have been able to do, it was remarkable what them lads produced for us, some of them will be playing for us today funnily enough. An offer to come to Winchester came up which I simply could not refuse for obvious reasons, I ensured the management team remained there to finish the season off as well as the players, once again showing loyalty to Fleet. To stay up for the number of years we did with next to no budget, no coaches anywhere meaning lads had to pay their own way everywhere for us, also may I add being the only side in the South West league in Hampshire for 2 seasons in a row, (unlike the array of Hampshire based clubs now) I felt was a brilliant thing to do, I am very very proud of that achievement believe me. To say that what happened when we travelled there all them months ago, was an extreme disappointment is an understatement, there is lots that can be said but you only have to look at the footage after the game to see a small part of what went on, followed by the subsequent string of very poor taste messages received on social media all very public and there to be seen. I feel it is something that needed to be addressed in my notes and maybe explain why I will not exactly have the red carpet rolled out for them today, there is massive amounts of respect for managers and staff in our league, I have a fantastic relationship with almost all of them and we speak on a regular basis despite rivalries, speaking to them they all have a very similar view to me funnily enough, albeit none have the history with Fleet that you feel may have earned a tad more respect. Anyway, regardless I wish them well in their fight for survival.

Onto more important matters, last week was yet another brilliant result against a big and physical outfit in Larkhall, they are a decent side who are well organised and it’s never an easy place to go, we were solid and resilient against them and got a brilliant goal from Jamie Barron to seal it, a great 3 points. What a run we are on with 32 points picked up from the last 39 available, winning 8 of our last 9 games in the league, scored 18 goals in our last 3 home games, ridiculous stats for a side like ours with no superstars, just a group of lads who are very young in the main, working hard and developing well together! We have a ridiculously tough run to come and so we still have it all to do to get anywhere near the play offs, however we have given ourselves a chance which at this stage of the season is exciting for all of us!

Player news is positive with a fully fit squad to choose from and that’s credit to the medical staff Jo Brocksom and Nina Parkin, more unsung heroes along with Pete Millard who does my scout reports, all of which do not even get so much as expenses for their efforts, they are here working for me and the club and are absolutely first class! Also along with Sean Birchnall who is without doubt the best number 2 in the league in my eyes and I’m delighted to have him! We didn’t sign anyone in the last week before the deadline, we do not have the funds to splash the cash like everyone else has been, we would rather work and develop our players and it’s got us this far, we will not jeopardise the club in anyway by chasing the dream, we will keep gradually improving every aspect we can around the place instead of and when we can!

Enjoy today’s game, we know it’s no pushover despite respective form and league positions, we will need to be at our best to get what we want, that’s all I will be looking for is a performance as I do in every game, I never ask them for a win, I just want a performance and then whatever the result I will walk away happy with my players! Give us a loud shout as always, your support is crucial and will be this last month!

Up the citizens!

Davo THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – FLEET TOWN CLUB HISTORY

Fleet Town FC was officially formed in 1890, making it the oldest sports club in the town. The centenary was celebrated in 1990 with a special Scroll being presented by the Football Association to the club, together with a commemorative plaque from the Hampshire FA. In its early years, Fleet FC played at the bottom of the Views where Campbells Close is today. Later they moved to Watsons Meadow in Fleet Road, roughly opposite where Travis & Perkins now stands, at the station end of Fleet Road. It was during this time that a young, future Prime Minister, Clement Atlee played for the club, his aunt living in a house that backed onto this original ground. In 1923 Lord Calthorpe of Elvetham Hall made available the site of the present ground in Crookham Road, and the club moved to its new home playing their first match on 3rd March 1923. The ground was subsequently bequeathed to the District Council and later the Fleet Town Council, with the proviso that it would continue to be for the use of the Town’s football club. In 1953 floodlights were installed for the first time.

The club entered the in 1961. From then on Fleet Town FC gradually moved through the Divisions, eventually moving into the Wessex League for the 1989/90 season.

After six years of steady progress, the club gained promotion to the Southern League as Wessex League Champions. In 1999/00, its fifth season in the Dr Martens Southern League the club finished bottom and returned to the Wessex League. Within a few seasons the club returned to the Southern League, winning promotion under Player/manager, Steve Beeks. Playing in the Ryman League the 2005/06 season began with a new management team of ex-England International Andy Sinton assisted by Steve Mellor.

In their second season, together this new team saw their side top the table at Christmas before they finally finished in 5th place. In a pulsating play-off semi-final, they lost 2-1 to Tooting & Mitcham, with the London side scoring twice in added-on time. The team also reached the final of the Hampshire County Cup, losing 2-1 to Aldershot, the game being played at AFC Bournemouth. For season 2007-08 the Club were moved by the FA to the BGB Southern League, South & West Division, and again had a record breaking season. Right up until the last few games they were in with a chance of automatic promotion but eventually had to accept 2nd spot behind Farnborough. This however was their highest ever non-league finish and again played in front of record crowds. It was heartbreak in the play-offs though as the team again lost in the semi-final, this time to an injury time penalty that gave Uxbridge a 2-1 victory. Fleet also went their furthest in the FA Cup before losing 2-1 at Havant & Waterlooville in the 3rd Qualifying Round.

Season 08/09 had the club on the move yet again with promotions/relegations elsewhere meaning that Fleet returned to the Ryman League, South Division. Andy Sinton’s side again broke more records as the team won four cups, including the prestigious Hampshire Senior Cup when over 1,200 witnessed victory over VTFC at St Marys Stadium, Southampton, to send the cup to Fleet for the first time. In addition, the team also won the Russell Cotes Cup, Aldershot Senior & North Hants cups. They again progressed to the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup before losing 5-2 in a bruising encounter at AFC Totton.

May 2010 brought major changes at the club with Chairman Graham Smith stepping down and this was shortly followed by manager Andy Sinton resigning to join AFC Telford United. For the new season, Steve Mellor stepped into the Manager’s shoes. A largely new Blues side finished a credible 13th. Season 2011-12 again saw Fleet Town move as they were switched back to the Southern League after a three-year absence, this time placed in the Division One Central.

However, results were poor and after a run of defeats and exiting the major cup competitions Mellor left in November 2011 to be replaced by Craig Davis as player/manager. Despite some improved displays, the Blues faced relegation after ending the season in 21st spot. However, due to circumstances elsewhere in the Football Pyramid Fleet Town gained an FA reprieve and retained their place as a Southern League club, to play a 2nd season in the Division One Central for season 2012/13.

In July 2012 Steve Cantle became Chairman and the club enjoyed an improved Southern League season, finishing with 4 teams behind them, in 18th spot. Following the end of the season Fleet Town were again moved, this time within the Southern League to Division One South & West.

After several difficult seasons the 2015/16 season saw Fleet moved back to the Division One Central, and they enjoyed 3 successful seasons with league status retained and the winning of the Aldershot Senior Cup and the North Hants Senior Cup in 2017.

However, 2018-19, Fleet’s 17th consecutive season at this level, brings new challenges to the Club as against their wishes, they have been laterally moved to the Southern League South with long journeys ahead including two to Devon. With Chairman Alec Grant at the helm the Club is moving forward and getting the infrastructure right and as a result the feeling at the Club is one of optimism. Sam Waters is the new Head of Football with Dave Kelly as manager and with their reliance on youth the Club are looking for stability and progress after the turmoil of the close season.

THE CITIZENS POST TED ‘TERRIFYING’ DRAKE

A man of dangerous attributes, merciless strike and should’ve been The Arsenals top scorer of all time played only once on your doorstep. It was Winchester City. The Citizens were once owners of this fine virtue as a boy wonder. How proud the club could be of him in their most successful side ever in their History to date? Extremely is the answer and forever it will remain in their legacy as a fine and ever delivering club.

Ted Drake once citizen, Saint and young gun happened to be only born down the road in the outskirts of Southampton on the 16th August 1912. By the age of 14 Ted had been offered a place at Tottenham Hotspur for a trial which was unattended due to what seemed at the time like a frustrating injury in which couldn’t be any more ironic as Ted went on and played for The Gunners, Tottenham’s North London rivals to date. Fortunately, though for young Ted this wasn’t as bad as it seemed as after leavings school, Ted went on and joined the Gas works company that is just outside St. Marys Stadium (Southampton’s current stadium) at the young age of 16 while also happening to play for local club Winchester City after playing for his relishing school team.

Within Teds first season Ted proved at such young age that he was goal scoring material with many worthy strikes being proved by his club who had given Ted the chance to developing and scoring qualities as a striker of high fortune who hadn’t even scaled the peaks as a professional player yet.

In the season before Ted left for The Saints Winchester city had won the Northern section of the Hampshire league and ventured onto their most successful F.A Cup run ever! As the team entered the Fourth qualifying round of The F.A Cup drawing away to Thames F.C where they ended up playing right inside a 120,000 capacity stadium which was to be far from filled in which a dismal 3-0 loss was achieved as the club failed to go into the First round in which they would’ve play Fulham F.C. Amazingly though playing at The Dell for the Hampshire senior cup final Winchester city beat Andover 4-2 in an exhilarating encounter. In the June of 1931 Ted was persuaded to join Southampton by George Kay. Sadly, Ted said goodbye to the citizen’s before joining Hampshire rivals.

Ted said “once a saint always a saint” he proved true as Ted went on and signed pro for them in that November being top goal scorer in each season he played in at The Dell. In March 1934 Ted finally took the offer to move to The Arsenal after scoring 48 goals in 74 games for The Saints currently being top scorer in The Second Division and described as “the best player in the world” Ted scored on his Arsenal debut in a thrilling 3-2 encounter against Wolves but unfortunately not enough games in to the season to earn a Championship medal. In this miraculous season Ted three records, the most goals as a player scored for Arsenal in a single game, the most goals standing of 7 goals in a top flight English football game on the 14th December 1935 with his son Graham born exactly 10 years later and the most goal scored in a single season for the Gunners of 44 as well as the league’s top scorer. The glory didn’t stop there as Ted won the 1935 and 1938 First Division and scoring the only goal in the 1936 F.A Cup final of 1936. Ted was top goals sorer in every season at Arsenal despite all ever-growing injuries throughout his playing career.

Ted went on and played for England enjoying 6 goals in 5 games but unfortunately after a back-injury Teds career as a player was halted in 1945 although winning the 1943 Southern cup in a 7-1 thrashing of Charlton while scoring in the victory. Ted went on and managed Hendon, Reading and Chelsea where he said it would take him three seasons to win the league in which he successfully did in 1955 while being the first man to win the first division as player and manager. Record after record was conquered as he changed the Chelsea badge to a lion from a pensioner and had a ten year stint at Fulham while having his testimonial game against The Arsenal which ended up as a 2-2 draw after being at the club from 1970 to 1978 after having a brief spell of Drakes betting and a six month spell at Barcelona under manager Vic Buckingham. Sadly, though after a manic and overwhelming life, Ted died at his home with his caring family on the 30th May 1995 in Rayne’s Park.

THE CITIZENS POST MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

We welcome Fleet to Winchester for today’s league game. Earlier this season we won 2-1 at Fleet in a fixture that was twice postponed thanks to goals from Jake Rawkins and Tyrell Mitford, with Meshach Williams scoring for Fleet. Prior to this season the clubs last met in league action in the 2007/08 season when both clubs were in the Southern League with the match at Winchester finishing 1-1 and the match at Fleet being won 4-1 by the home team. The teams however have in recent seasons met twice in the Hampshire Senior Cup and once in the F A Trophy with Winchester winning in each occasion. My last visit to Fleet was for one of these Hampshire Senior Cup games in which Craig Davis played part of the game as Fleet goalkeeper. The two clubs would have also met in the Hampshire League during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Today’s game is given an added spice by the fact that manager Craig Davis. Ryan Pryce, . Josh Harfield, Simba Mlambo, Rob Carr and Pete Millard were all formerly at Fleet in either a playing or managerial/scouting role as were Ben “Chalky” White and our former manager Ian Saunders, while goalkeeper Brendan Norris is another who has played for both clubs and it was in fact between the posts for Fleet in the match between the clubs earlier in the season.

Fleet are currently struggling at the wrong end of the table, but this season their league wins have included successes against Cinderford, Bideford and Yate and as they are fighting to beat the drop we cannot afford to take them lightly. Life has not easy for them financially and we do sympathise with them following the death of chairman Steve Cantle just over two years ago, and the fact that their travelling overheads and expenses would be less if they had been placed in the Central Division which was their preference.

I have not only seen Fleet play Eastleigh many times in the league, Hampshire Senior, Wessex League and Russell Cotes Cup, but I also saw them play against Clanfield (Oxon) in the early years of the F A Vase. I do remember that day the Clanfield players having a good time at the nearby Wheatsheaf afterwards. Fleet’s ground Calthorpe Park is I think the only ground I have visited in five different decades through an association with the away team. I have been to Thatcham’s ground in five different decades, but during this time they moved from Lancaster Close to Waterside Park.

When Fleet who also played in the Aldershot and Basingstoke, Athenian, Combined Counties and Surrey County Leagues finished next to bottom of the Chiltonian League, perhaps surprisingly in view of ground improvements they made were allowed to join the Wessex League in 1989. They struggled in their first season finishing second from bottom with only 20 points from 36 games, but did much better in the following two seasons finishing in mid-positions and in Ross Larkin and Mark Frampton assembled a good striking partnership. In the next three seasons, they continued their improvement and in 1994/95 won the Wessex League title and with it promotion to the Southern League, although after five seasons in which they failed to finish in the top half of the table they were relegated back to the Wessex League, although they returned as runners up two seasons later. Since then they have oscillated between the Southern and Isthmian Leagues doing particularly well from 2007/08 to 2009/10, although since 2011 they have been in the Southern League.

Amongst their former players are former Prime Minister Clement Attlee, Leroy Rosenior and Andy Sinton. Andy who won 12 full caps for England was Fleet manager from 2005 to 2010.

Congratulations to our under 16 team on beating Sholing 6-0 in the county cup final, and it was nice to see us win at Larkhall. I do not go to very many away games and the games I have seen have not produced brilliant results despite the fact that we moved into the playoff positions with the result at Larkhall and have had goods travelling support this campaign.

THE CITIZENS POST MATCH REPORT – BY MALCOLM CLARKE LARKHALL ATHLETIC 0-1 WCFC

Winchester completed their second 1-0 win against Larkhall this season and moved into the playoff places having overtaken Evesham who have played two games more on goal difference. However, Cinderford and Melksham who Winchester have yet to travel to are not far behind, although Winchester's results in recent weeks have been very good.

Larkhall are currently in mid-table, but Lewis Powell their striker is the highest goalscorer in the division apart from the Cirencester duo of Ben Whitehead and Alan Griffin. With Bath City, away, no Premier Division football and with many groundhoppers keen to see their picturesque ground on the top of a hill there was a good crowd for the game.

For Winchester, they were able to name the same starting line-up for the third successive match. The only change being on the substitutes bench with Rob Carr now available again replacing the injured Graham Williams.

Early on Lewis Powell and Joe Cook had off target efforts for their respective sides, while both Jamie Barron and Liam Gilbert forced saves from Shaun Semmens in the home goal.

The two number 6's both got in crucial blocks with Josh Harfield keeping out Harry Hope and Josh Jones denying Oli Bailey.

However, with eight minutes remaining in the first half Winchester took the lead when Oli Bailey headed into the path of Liam Gilbert whose effort was only blocked into the path of Jamie Barron who put the ball in the net thus giving Winchester a 1-0 lead at the interval.

Early in the second half Winchester forced a couple of corners, while at the other end on a bobbly pitch Ryan Pryce got a hand to a Hope cross but could not hold it, but both the goalkeeper and the Winchester defenders reacted quickly to ensure that any danger was immediately snuffed out.

Winchester though were defending well as a unite and getting important interceptions and apart from a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions which were also a feature of the game at the other pitch they were denying the opposition a sniff of goal and were holding on to the ball well and were looking at least equally likely to score the game's next goal.

Both teams made three substitutions with in Winchester's case Rob Carr, David Jerrard and Tyrell Mitford coming on for IK Hill, Simba Mlambo and Oli Bailey respectively although the substitutions were made at different stages of the second half. Rob Carr had a chance following a pass from Joe Cook, but his effort was off target.

Larkhall came closest to scoring when Ryan Pryce did well to come out of his goal and did just enough to deny substitute Alex Lambert who would have been clean through if it had not been for the intervention of the goalkeeper.

It was a good three points and those who attended were offered good hospitality by the home club.
