I wish Fleet Town a pleasant afternoon with us. Obviously, they are a club who held a very special place in my heart for over 6 years, playing over 300 games and managing the club for the vast majority of them. I had an extremely close bond with Steve Cantle their late chairman who sadly passed away, following that tragic and terribly sad situation what occurred was really not good and extremely poor from all concerned, despite what was happening we carried on fulfilling their fixtures and picking up points we never should have been able to do, it was remarkable what them lads produced for us, some of them will be playing for us today funnily enough. An offer to come to Winchester came up which I simply could not refuse for obvious reasons, I ensured the management team remained there to finish the season off as well as the players, once again showing loyalty to Fleet. To stay up for the number of years we did with next to no budget, no coaches anywhere meaning lads had to pay their own way everywhere for us, also may I add being the only side in the South West league in Hampshire for 2 seasons in a row, (unlike the array of Hampshire based clubs now) I felt was a brilliant thing to do, I am very very proud of that achievement believe me. To say that what happened when we travelled there all them months ago, was an extreme disappointment is an understatement, there is lots that can be said but you only have to look at the footage after the game to see a small part of what went on, followed by the subsequent string of very poor taste messages received on social media all very public and there to be seen. I feel it is something that needed to be addressed in my notes and maybe explain why I will not exactly have the red carpet rolled out for them today, there is massive amounts of respect for managers and staff in our league, I have a fantastic relationship with almost all of them and we speak on a regular basis despite rivalries, speaking to them they all have a very similar view to me funnily enough, albeit none have the history with Fleet that you feel may have earned a tad more respect. Anyway, regardless I wish them well in their fight for survival. Onto more important matters, last week was yet another brilliant result against a big and physical outfit in Larkhall, they are a decent side who are well organised and it’s never an easy place to go, we were solid and resilient against them and got a brilliant goal from Jamie Barron to seal it, a great 3 points. What a run we are on with 32 points picked up from the last 39 available, winning 8 of our last 9 games in the league, scored 18 goals in our last 3 home games, ridiculous stats for a side like ours with no superstars, just a group of lads who are very young in the main, working hard and developing well together! We have a ridiculously tough run to come and so we still have it all to do to get anywhere near the play offs, however we have given ourselves a chance which at this stage of the season is exciting for all of us! Player news is positive with a fully fit squad to choose from and that’s credit to the medical staff Jo Brocksom and Nina Parkin, more unsung heroes along with Pete Millard who does my scout reports, all of which do not even get so much as expenses for their efforts, they are here working for me and the club and are absolutely first class! Also along with Sean Birchnall who is without doubt the best number 2 in the league in my eyes and I’m delighted to have him! We didn’t sign anyone in the last week before the deadline, we do not have the funds to splash the cash like everyone else has been, we would rather work and develop our players and it’s got us this far, we will not jeopardise the club in anyway by chasing the dream, we will keep gradually improving every aspect we can around the place instead of and when we can! Enjoy today’s game, we know it’s no pushover despite respective form and league positions, we will need to be at our best to get what we want, that’s all I will be looking for is a performance as I do in every game, I never ask them for a win, I just want a performance and then whatever the result I will walk away happy with my players! Give us a loud shout as always, your support is crucial and will be this last month! Up the citizens! Davo THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – FLEET TOWN CLUB HISTORY Fleet Town FC was officially formed in 1890, making it the oldest sports club in the town. The centenary was celebrated in 1990 with a special Scroll being presented by the Football Association to the club, together with a commemorative plaque from the Hampshire FA. In its early years, Fleet FC played at the bottom of the Views where Campbells Close is today. Later they moved to Watsons Meadow in Fleet Road, roughly opposite where Travis & Perkins now stands, at the station end of Fleet Road. It was during this time that a young, future Prime Minister, Clement Atlee played for the club, his aunt living in a house that backed onto this original ground. In 1923 Lord Calthorpe of Elvetham Hall made available the site of the present ground in Crookham Road, and the club moved to its new home playing their first match on 3rd March 1923. The ground was subsequently bequeathed to the District Council and later the Fleet Town Council, with the proviso that it would continue to be for the use of the Town’s football club. In 1953 floodlights were installed for the first time. The club entered the Hampshire League in 1961. From then on Fleet Town FC gradually moved through the Divisions, eventually moving into the Wessex League for the 1989/90 season. After six years of steady progress, the club gained promotion to the Southern League as Wessex League Champions. In 1999/00, its fifth season in the Dr Martens Southern League the club finished bottom and returned to the Wessex League. Within a few seasons the club returned to the Southern League, winning promotion under Player/manager, Steve Beeks. Playing in the Ryman League the 2005/06 season began with a new management team of ex-England International Andy Sinton assisted by Steve Mellor. In their second season, together this new team saw their side top the table at Christmas before they finally finished in 5th place. In a pulsating play-off semi-final, they lost 2-1 to Tooting & Mitcham, with the London side scoring twice in added-on time. The team also reached the final of the Hampshire County Cup, losing 2-1 to Aldershot, the game being played at AFC Bournemouth. For season 2007-08 the Club were moved by the FA to the BGB Southern League, South & West Division, and again had a record breaking season.
