Manager’s Notes

Good evening everyone and welcome to the Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Cove enjoy their short stay with us.

We were back to winning ways on Saturday against Sandhurst, a fully deserved 3 points after a very good away day. In comparison to our last game here against Godalming we were very clinical and took our chances in our good patches during the game. Another positive was that we managed the game and score line really well and saw the second half out fairly comfortably.

Tonight's visitors had a very good result on Saturday too and just another example of how competitive the league is this year and you shouldn't read too much in to league positions. Only 8 points separate 4th to 16th. We will have to be at our best again to get a positive result.

Thank you for your support, I hope you enjoy the game.

Introducing Our Visitors – Cove FC

Cove Football Club was formed in 1897 by a group of local friends playing on a field behind their favourite Public House.

Later moving to a more central location, Cove Green became their home until 1973, when they moved to their present ground at the Oak Farm Stadium. Playing their football in The Surrey Leagues, Cove enjoyed success for many years, winning more than their fair share of silverware including the League Championship 3 years in succession and a double in that period.

In 1973, the club decided to upgrade and were accepted into the Hampshire Leagues, but had to leave 'The Green' for safety reasons and play at Oak Farm. The Division 4 Championship was won at the first attempt, and the Division 3 title followed 2 years later. After a couple of seasons, Cove finished Runners-Up in Division 2, but decided to withdraw from this league due to the time incurred travelling to away matches at Portsmouth or Southampton. This was before the M3 motorway was built and all roads were A and B types.

They returned to the more local Combined Counties League in 1980 and won the League Cup beating close neighbours and rivals Ash United. Since moving into their new home, many changes have taken place at Oak Farm with the installation of floodlights a concrete perimeter wall and stand in their quest to host senior non-league football. These achievements are the more remarkable with Farnborough Town (then Conference League) and Aldershot Town (then Football League) just a couple of miles down the road.

In 1990, Cove was given the opportunity to join the after finishing third. New manager ‘Chick’ Botley assembled a squad strong enough to finish a respectable fourth in their first season. Two more successful seasons followed narrowly missing out on promotion, one being a final day defeat by the new Aldershot Town.

Due to the ever-spiraling cost of football at this level, Cove were forced to withdraw from their league and after 3 unsuccessful attempts to join the Wessex League, had to revert back into The Combined Counties League, where they remained with little success. In 2009, the club appointed Koo Dumbuya as manager and a member of the Steve Beeks double winning team and well known around the area. Having played professional football for Aldershot and Brentford, the club decided his playing experience and knowledge could be invaluable and in his first season, Cove won the Southern Combination Cup with a 4-0 victory over Chessington and Hook.

In Season 2010-11, Cove won the Combined Counties League Cup with a 2-0 win over Bedfont, followed by a victory over Farnborough Town in the semi-final of the Aldershot Senior Cup before losing to Fleet Town in the final.

In 2011 manager Koo Dumbuya left the club after 4 years as player/manager to take up a post at Chertsey Town, leaving a big hole to fill as his knowledge of local football was immense.

During season 2012-13 following some poor performances, the club employed an ex-player Anthony Millerick who brought instant success with the winning of the Aldershot Senior Cup and a 3-0 victory over Fleet Spurs, also finishing 3rd in the League, our highest position for many a year.

2013-2014 was another successful season finishing 5th after a run of 22 games, 19 wins and 1 defeat and 2 draws. Cove thrived in 2014-2015 as well sitting on top of the league for half the season, but unable to go for promotion due to the cost of ground improvements and travel, saw a considerable dip in form, leaving Cove with a fifth-place finish and a mass exodus of management and players. With hindsight a poor decision by the committee at the time.

Cove FC – continued

A complete change of personnel followed with the appointment of Dave Matthews as manager, following his success as a Youth Team coach. He accepted the challenge of building a new team capable of retaining their position in the Premier Division. However, our young team of hopefuls were unable to compete at this level and after some poor results found ourselves at the foot of the table many points adrift of safety. Following Dave’s resignation at Christmas, new manager Paul Duncan set about trying to save our Premier status, but despite some improved performances the points difference right at the bottom was too much and hence we found ourselves relegated to the CCFL Division One. This is the first time in the clubs 120-year history that Cove had to face up to relegation.

In the summer of 2016 Cove desperately needed a change; both in personnel responsible for the club overall and football strategy going forward. It also needed a huge amount of work to the clubhouse and grounds. The whole place needed an overhaul. Those responsible for the last 15 years had let it go and driven it into the ground. Cove FC had to survive. The result was several resignations from the old committee and new ideas and aspirations from many in the Youth setup and new Chairman Salvatore Diprima saw the start of a new era. The club structure has changed and focus was on building a new senior side ably supported by new Under 18 and Reserve sides. The future is to have a thriving family club including all 23 plus youth teams and parents, walking football and local sponsors. In the meantime, the football management efforts of Paul Duncan and Salv Diprima were not good enough and Cove avoided relegation from CCFL due to another club leaving. A must needed reprieve but by now Paul Duncan had left and Salv took the Manager role.

This 2017-18 season started well enough but by Christmas Salvatore has been unsuccessful trying to build a new team and improve our football standard. Cove FC had been in the bottom three for most of the season, therefore he was sacked as first team manager in February 2018. Management was been passed to his assistant Josh Taylor for the remainder of the season. Salvatore immediately resigned as Chairman and left the club. Josh was appointed First Team Manager for 2018 -19 after his successful spell in charge for the last 12 games of 2017-18 and lifting Cove off the bottom of the league and ensuring we stayed in CCL div 1. The 2018-19 season was a huge challenge as we rebuild from the last 3 years of chaos ruling and decision making from the last committee. Unfortunately, Cove were never far from the bottom three and although a series of positive results came around Christmas the squad of players was not constant enough and too many changes brought negative results. A poor discipline record coupled with injuries meant the last few matches were a shambles. Cove were rock bottom at the end of the season and faced relegation to step 7.

The committee were very surprised to receive the resignation from Josh in May even though he had our full backing. At the same time, the club received the bad news we had been relegated to step 7 and the Hampshire Premier league. An all-time low for those involved at the club but the job of selecting a new manager was still outstanding so adverts were placed on social media. From the many applicants received four were selected for interview. The competition was very close with the standard of candidate was very high but eventually Joe Lawler who was managing Overton FC very successfully was appointed. The club is very pleased to have Joe on board and we look forward to 2019-20 season.

A special mention to Ron Brown, who in 1990 received an F.A. Award for 50 years’ service to Cove FC, including 35 years as secretary. Ron retired in 1982 passing the reins to his son Graham who until just recently remained in the job. Sadly, Ron passed away in 2009 after 70 years’ service including 20 years as Club President.

Awards by Hampshire FA: Frank Kenton and Graham Brown - 25 years’ service.

Base of the Pyramid Name That Team - Quiz

Can you work out which club is being described in the clues? All answers relate to current Step 5 teams (2019-20 season).

1. Originally, we were known as Axwell Park Colliery Welfare and played in the Derwent Valley League. Our golden era was in the late 70s and early 80s when we won the Wearside League and won the FA Vase in 1981. We now back in the Northern League Division One after two decades in Step 6. 2. Founded by the Sikh community in 1991, we began life as a Sunday league team in the Walsall and District League. Our first team now play in the Midland Premier League and we also have a thriving women’s and junior set-up as well as being known for the quality of our Punjabi cuisine. 3. We were founded in 1946, formed from the merger of Sudbury Rangers and the interestingly named Sudbury Ratepayers. David Seaman was once hired as our goalkeeping coach. Our ground was used as a training base by England during the 1966 World Cup. 4. Formed in 1872, we were founder members of the Bristol & District League (now known as the Western League). Although we have played in several local leagues, we are back in the Western League these days. In the 2005-06 season we had former Bristol Rovers and Liverpool defender Nick Tanner as our manager. 5. Founder members of the Bedfordshire FA, we can name all manner of famous players amongst our ranks including Jeff Astle, Kerry Dixon, and George Best (on loan). We were also the first club to be managed by Barry Fry, who also played for us in the early 1970’s. After seven seasons at Step 4 we are now back in the Spartan South Midlands League. 6. Formed three years before the end of the 19th Century, we were founder member so the Norfolk & Suffolk Senior League, which we went on to win three times. We currently play in the Eastern Counties League Premier Division. Known as The Bloaters we play our games in front of a superb Victorian grandstand that attracts groundhoppers from all over the country. 7. Not many teams can claim a future Prime Minister amongst their list of former players. However, this club, currently in the Wessex Premier League, can boast Clement Atlee as a former player, albeit well before he became leader of the country. 8. Another Midland Premier League side. This team’s former player and manager list is almost a who’s who of football. On the player side there is David Nish, Ernie Moss, Terry Hennessey, Julian Joachim and Jeff Blockley amongst others. Martin O’Neill was manager of the side in 1989. 9. This club has two nicknames, the lesser known of the two being The Trickies. Although they now play in the North West Counties Premier League, they can boast that they were founder members of the English Second Division in 1892. They can also lay claim to a European Cup winner in their ranks when Bruce Grobbelaar played one game for the club in 1999 10. This Northamptonshire club, although originally formed in 1867 resigned from the league in 2002 but were resurrected when a group of friends decided to get the club going again. They put together a team of people, including Snooker World Champion Peter Ebdon (who now has a stand named after him) and started again in local football, regaining their Step 5 status in 2006.

Answers: 1. Whickham FC, 2. Sporting Khalsa, 3. Wembley FC, 4. Roman Glass St George, 5. Dunstable Town, 6. Great Yarmouth Town, 7. Fleet Town, 8. Shepshed Dynamo, 9. Northwich Victoria, 10. Wellingborough Town With thanks to https://www.botp.co.uk/

Game of the People

BACK in the 1980s, football was in a miserable place. Plagued by hooliganism, supporters taken for granted, falling crowds, a poor product on the pitch and dreadful spectating conditions. From catering to care, the industry was a second-rate pastime followed by people who were almost embarrassed to admit they watched football on a regular basis. What’s more the government didn’t like football and with each and every well publicised setback, including Bradford, Brussels and, ultimately Hillsborough, the establishment’s response to the game was one of gross indifference. Those that occupied football grounds were, quite simply, scum. In the 1980s, the fanzine phenomenon gathered momentum and while most were club specific and a little myopic, When Saturday Comes became the modern successor to the fabled, and rarely seen, Foul. Heath Robinson in design in its early years, WSC became the soapbox for fans who were unhappy about their club or football in general. It raised issues that people were often aware of but had no forum to express their dissatisfaction. There was plenty to be unhappy about at that time as football in Britain looked and behaved like a dying swan. Amid an attitude of world-weariness, writers pleaded for a better time, greater communication between fans and clubs and an end to badly-run, cash-clumsy clubs. To some extent, the WSC writers of that time got what they wanted. In other ways, they just got a different set of irritations and problems. Six years after the magazine’s launch, the Premier League was formed and football in Britain changed, possibly forever. The corporatisation of football has been an enormous success in many ways, but it has also attempted to jettison the game’s traditional audience. In the 1980s, we had hooligans, but the “tasty boys” of that era are now entering retirement and their terraces have long gone. While football has lost some of its inclusiveness – despite its attachment to causes – the game has become a “supply and demand” industry and pricing policies have responded accordingly. When WSC kicked-off, people’s discontent with football manifested itself in falling crowds – the 1985-86 top flight average was just 19,797 – in 2019, the average is 95% higher – today, the new audience that football’s marketing folk longed for cannot get enough high-priced tickets and merchandise. There’s still lots of issues to question clubs and the governing bodies about, but today’s fans have social media to voice their opinion, and what’s more, they can be REALLY nasty and accusatory and hide behind anonymity. Meanwhile, the WSC warriors of old are more concerned that there’s easy access lavatories for that half-time leak. It may be that WSC’s place has been taken by social media and the fashion towards instant content that doesn’t require too much concentration. Like most print products, it’s tough for the publication to find its place in the modern football library. That library will be that much poorer without WSC. Some great writers have cut their teeth with the magazine and when you compare it alongside some of the anodyne content found in club publications or the obsession with fan culture and ladishness that defines others, there’s an argument that WSC should be more prominent and certainly a more expansive product. As the magazine itself said, “We’d like to think we’d be missed it we weren’t here.” No doubt about it. With thanks to Neil Jensen - https://gameofthepeople.com/

Our History

Bedfont & Feltham Football club was formed in May 2012 following the amalgamation of Bedfont Football & Social Club with Feltham FC, taking the place of Feltham in the step 6 Combined Counties Division 1. The changes bought some decent results; two 5th place finishes in their first two seasons.

The 2015/16 season saw a runners-up spot, 3 points behind CB Hounslow United and this was good enough for promotion to the Premier Division.

The club only lasted at the higher level for one season, finishing second- bottom and some 13 points adrift of safety. Season 2017-18 saw the club finish in 17th place. In the summer of 2018, Adam Bessent joined from Staines Lammas and their loss was Bedfont & Feltham's gain.

Season 2018-19 started very well for Bedfont & Feltham seeing them unbeaten at the top of the league. Getting off to a cracking start helped: an 11-0 win over Bagshot earned the TalkSPORT 2 'Non-League Team of the Week' award.

The club held their heads high and were one of the forerunners throughout the season; suffering their first league defeat in November. Further losses in January and February saw the crown slip slightly, leading to an eventual fifth-place finish.

In the FA Cup, 2015-16 saw the club's best FA Cup run as they beat London Tigers and AFC Hayes (both after replays). A tough test against AFC Rushden & Diamonds awaited them in the 1st Qualifying Round where the run ended, despite a credible performance in the 2-1 defeat. The FA Vase has proved trickier, the best run being the 2nd Round in 2019 where they lost 1-3 after extra time at Welling Town. Local cup wins include the CCL Division 1 Challenge Cup, lifted in 2015 as they beat Worcester Park 4-3 on penalties in the final as well as the Middlesex Premier Cup a year earlier.

Adam Bessent has brought in Mark Goff as Coach and the club is continuing its foray into youth football, with teams from Under 8s to Under 16s.

The club has retained the FA Charter Standard and looks forward to season 2019-20 with great enthusiasm.
